I agree they could have waited. I also doubt 10 - 12 teams would have been interested in him at $2.5. Anyway, another incredibly bad WFC move that stings for an extra year with the picks and cap hit.
My read is they’re just saying f$#k it. We’re going to clean out all the corners of the closet, so we (and all players) know what to expect come training camp. Fast / deep cuts, then heal and move on.

Not saying it’s the best way to go about it, but it is a viable way.

Yep. Seems like they thought this was addition by subtraction. Even though there are still 7 dmen, I hope Andrae and Attard see time up.

Yea this is why I'm not ready to anoint Briere as a genius yet. This was a bad move all the way around. Hopefully there was more to it than what we know, but I doubt it.
Briere didn't sign him.

The contract was not movable.

Looks like the only team that wanted him got him anyway.

I know all this, my point and others was, why waive him if you're not resigning him? There was no hurry either way and had you waited you may have gotten something for him other than eating part of his salary and he walks away for nothing.

I guess we didn't learn our lesson when Ghost went from 20 points to 51 points his first season after leaving our team and his value skyrocketed.

Rookie GM move.

100% on the money there was no rush to get him out of there.

We could've put him on waivers anytime.

From the Athletic:

Is it possible the Flyers get significantly better in 2023-24? Sure. But it would require a lot to go right.

Ivan Provorov, Hayes and Tony DeAngelo weren’t great for the Flyers in 2022-23 — Hayes was pretty clearly the best of the three, and even he had major defensive issues and disappeared from a scoring standpoint after the All-Star break. But we’re still talking about the team’s No. 1 defenseman, second-highest scorer, and highest-scoring defenseman (and best power play threat). Losing them is going to have an impact, and the blue line corps in particular is looking mighty weak now. York, I believe in as a player, but is he ready to take on Provorov’s role? I’m skeptical. And if he’s not, that basically leaves Travis Sanheim and Rasmus Ristolainen as your two top-pair defensemen. Sean Walker or Marc Staal may be in the top four. Yikes.

I think they are shedding all the negative attitudes. If they play hard every night and as a unit, I’ll be watching.
Essentially, anyone that clashed with Torts, didn't fit into his style of play or the long-term rebuild of the franchise got dropped or simply not re-signed. I'm good with that, but it has to remain consistent. We'll start to be a really pesky team to play against with everyone rowing the boat in the same direction and no distractions or deterrents to that.

Here's what our defensive pairings look like for the upcoming season:

Sanheim and Risto
York and Staal
Seeler and Walker

That's pretty embarrassing.

This group won't be winning too many races to the puck. I would like to see Andrae and Attard in there at some point.

Attard/Andrae/ Zamula will be the 7th and 8th defenseman on the squad. Im sure they will be rotating in on the bottom pair. My feeling is that using them in that fashion will impede their growth. If i was Hart id ask out now as he is going to be facing 80 shots a night.
How bad are we that we have Risto as a top pair defenseman.

I can see York and Staal moving up to what would be a "1st" paring. Risto had a better 2nd half last year, but the forwards better be backchecking and in good position all night or shot records will be broken. Hart may give up 3 goals and still have a .95 save %.

Looks a lot worse when it’s put on paper

Yeah, there's nobody that you would consider a top pairing defenseman unless someone grows into it. That said, I hope we're not giving up 60 shots per game. That would surely be an Nhl record...Lol
