Hmmmmmmm..............maybe because he and his agent said it.

LOL.
His brother and his agent.

Malik said he wants to be a Laker. But, the money matters.

Like there is actual audio of him saying this last month.

He said that in March.

As soon as the Season ended he said wants to come back. But, the money matters.

He also said that feeling at home matters as well. Of course the money matters. No one has said it doesn't. But there are other factors for him too.

Once the off-season starts we'll see what other teams are actually offering, we'll see if the Lakers are willing to give him the TPMLE and what the difference is.

If that all lines up, it will be up to him to decide if he feels at home enough (and confident enough) to take less for 1 year for potentially $44 million over then next 4 years.

People are acting like it just comes down down to take less to stay with the Lakers or get more someplace else. It's not that simple when you consider early Bird rights for 2023.

Like everyone not a Lakers fan says, why would he pass of financial security someplace else to do that?

You are insane if you think a guy whose made 17 mil is gonna leave 40 mil on the table.

Nobody is going out like Shroeder...

Monk could get injured, another player could take his minutes and then he's fucked.

D Schrod a perfect example

8.5 mill average over 2 seasons isn't a drastic cut from what he could get.....so there's that.

Let's do the math.....6 mill next season and 11 mill the following.

That's an average of 8.5 mill.....not a huge cut off the 5-10 mill (using the article TJ posted) he could make this offseason.
Lets do the math...

6 mil this Season and a bad year or injury and vet min the following year.

Or Heaven forbid, LeBron talks another guy into coming to the Lakers and Monk becomes expendable....

34 mil gone.

He also said this after the Season.

“I love being here, man. I love playing in this atmosphere and of course would love to come back and not do this again.”

“It’s really me being comfortable,” Monk said. “Feeling like (I am) at home, whether that’s here or somewhere else. With a little money or more money, it’s just really me feeling at home at the end of the day.

“I mean, the money matters, but I know what I can do on the court and I can go out there and earn that,” Monk continued. “I think I proved that, so it’s just me feeling at home and
wanted.”

This doesn't prove what you want it to...it also doesn't what Lakers fans want it to.

It says that money is important (no one has said it isn't) but that there are other considerations as well.

In short, it says what I've been saying this whole time.

Unlikely since LeBron knows he needs to be surrounded by shooters and Monk is most def a shooter.

Lmao

Dude....

40 beats 18 no matter how many times you type it.

Nothing is guaranteed without a contract.

You know who else believed this kinda nonsense?

Nerlens Noel and Dennis Shroeder.

Schroeder was in a different pay level than Monk is. The Lakers offered him what? Over $20 million per year and he thought he could get more.

According to NBA execs, Monks ceiling is $10 million per year and his floor is $5 million per year. Big difference.

Just saying the next 2 seasons.....like TJ said.....we could offer him 4 years at 44 mill after next season if he signed for 6 mill this offseason.

Money is all relative. What Schroder did was obviously an all time insane decision versus what we are discussing but it's still turning down guaranteed money for the potential of practically the same

Monk may stay with LAL but it won't be for a discount

Unless his offers are closer to the $5 million floor than the $10 million ceiling...he will have to because the Lakers can't offer more than $6.2 this year. They can offer him $11 million per year next year.

Monk is 24. Role players his age do the following during free agency.

1) take the most money
2) bet on yourself and sign a 1 yr deal hoping you have a good season and sign a bigger deal next summer but monk did that last summer

This Is what we are all saying basically

Except, his agent said he's loyal to the Lakers and willing to take less since they were just 1 of 3 teams to offer him a contract last offseason.
