Trying to get protections is still haggling over picks

lol

Not really. Asking for protections is pretty standard any time there are 1st round picks involved. To not ask is malpractice.

The Lakers have to at least try and protect their best interests in the future.....they can always cave later and make the deal.

They can’t protect the 29 without the pick evaporating.

And if the 27 rolls over you get nothing for it or can’t trade the 29

If he does, nobody can tell me he’s not a homosexual.

Listen, only romantic or familial love makes you that blind.
He will, not an ounce of alpha blood there

Nope.

I think the most a team will do is a 2 year deal worth 98 million.

2 years with a player option for the 3rd

And I don’t even think he’ll go as high as 98 million.

Exactly. I’m sure the goal is get picks and players but players that can help right now with KD still there…young players that can help now. If you can only offer an inflated contract you better be offering another young player and unprotected picks. You can’t have your cake and eat it

Oh, they actually are haggling.

Even still, the Lakers have remained reluctant to offer both their 2027 and 2029 first-round picks in any deal — a price rival teams have consistently required to take on Westbrook’s contract — let alone sacrifice both selections without protections.

So what happens when Irving is dealt and the team doesn’t want to talk about an extension right now?

End of the day, they're going to try to negotiate.

First rule of negotiation: Don't lead with your best offer.

Second rule of negotiation: If you don't ask, the answer is always no.

To act like the Lakers shouldn't ask for protections, or that they should just open with their best offer...Well, lets' just say...I
don't really gamble...but I want to play poker with folks who think that way. lol
