Holy moly did you hear about this?

report shows officials missed seven calls in final minutes of Lakers-Mavs (from si-.com)

Seven is a whole helluva lot. Said this before, it's not if but when will the refs cost a team a win the playoffs.
Of course it's not "if" it happened at least as far back as 2002

Agree, that’s all coaches can do. But the league can’t just keep saying it’s part of the game and not trying to improve. Things should be getting better not worse.
What specifically can they do? Fire all the refs and hire new ones? You don't think those new ones will miss just as many calls?

People complaining about bad calls here and there is fine.

What I take issue with is when people say things like:

“Refs don’t know the rules”

Or

“Refs are terrible at their jobs”.

No, it is just a really hard job. And batting average for a good official isn’t as high as people want it to be.
BOOM.

Exactly, it’s bs when people say it isn’t getting worse. If you watch games on a regular basis like most here and myself. It isn’t getting better, that is for sure.
Like I said, I don’t care about missed calls but it is part of the game but in crunch time there should be more consistency. You can’t have a ton of missed calls in a short period of time. It’s all about improvement of the game. Sitting back and saying missed calls happen and it is part of the game isn’t fixing the issue, it’s just being stubborn.
How do you fix the issue besides telling them "do better"?

Set up a training program to get them early on, like college age so the average age of nba refs is younger.

Younger legs and eyes that are similarly trained is a start

I’ve already said they could add another ref on the floor

Skybox ref for quick replays like did the ball hit the rim etc would be fine. Refs on the floor should never be the ones reviewing a challenge anyway, let the nba office handle those

I don’t think adding a ref moves the needle.

Just 1 more guy to miss calls.

OK, younger refs? Sure whatever. Doubt there will be noticeably fewer bad calls.

Sometimes things can't be made perfect.

What is the move though?

I have yet to hear any actual suggestion other than:

“Refs need to be better”.

That isn’t productive. This is the best of the best. Punishing them for missed calls isn’t going to help them do their jobs better.

That idea implies they aren’t trying.
Extra ref, keep your challenge if it is successful.

Some of us listed that multiple times.

We aren’t just waving our fists at the clouds.

Yep.
Damn...that's some messed up shit right there.
That dude likely has friends or knows someone that does that type of repair work.
Just tell him to contact someone to fix that situation today and for him to pay them out of his own pocket for the work, because it was of his doing.
Shouldn't come out of your pocket @Mecca

That said....hopefully you have some good home owners insurance that will cover that kind of damage.
So, this guy just runs the crew, he doesn’t own the business.

I called the owner.

Its being repaired right now.

I told him not to send this bitch to my home again.

Eh….

You need a mix…imo

Can’t let these guys get to long in the tooth, where they all retire at the same time or get to set in their ways.

The problem with the younger guys is player intimidation or the refs trying to flex to prove they aren’t soft.

So, they shouldn’t try?

Just accept the fucked upness of it all and grin and bare it?
Exactly. The answer is the multimillion $ replay center they are already paying for anyway. Quit worrying about the referees feelings. The really bad stuff is easily corrected by a single person dedicated to each game. Make it quick, flash a light that the call was wrong and move on. It can’t all be fixed at once, nor will how to do it be apparent all at once.

Okay time to get cruel.

You hook these fuckin' refs up to some contraption that shocks the hell outta them each time they mess a call up. It happens so often they deserve it!

Okay something more rational. Each time a ref misses a call both teams get an extra challenge. For the nitpickers notice I said more rational but not actually reational.

Something that will never happen. Start fining refs for missed/incorrect calls.

I think I would be a great ref. Especially for Lakers games. :heh:

Sure, you need a mix, and you're right younger doesn't necessarily mean better.

It's not really fixable. Yes try to do better, yes highlight the egregious ones, but in the end it's just the nature of a sport played at warp speed with huge guys and tricky rules.

Exactly.

None of us are saying we have a tried and true solution here.

We are just saying the problem does exist.

The “ Well, thats just the way it is “ hand wave is not the way to go.
