Sixers are in a weird spot. It’s an order of operations thing: Coach, Harden decision, Harris decision, Embiid decision. One less team to deal with BUT Philly could still make some moves and be a dangerous team in the east. Minus Harden they are below the C’s, Bucks and Heat. Just makes more room for teams on the rise. You never know the C’s could make a big move depending on this series…more likely to get a new coach
I expect Koby to make moves this offseason and shape the fit of the Cavs roster to put them in closer to contention next season.
Gun to my head, the Sixers ownership right now has priority 1 getting a new arena over winning a championship. They will more than likely seek some sort of merger with a head coach that isn’t D’Antoni and an attempt to have D’Antoni the guy’s top offensive assistant. Morey commits to Harden for 4 years and $160-200 million. They keep Embiid and hope running a different scheme with a different voice will somehow turn two guys who are playoff losers into playoff winners. They’ll deal Tobias Harris for depth pieces.
What I would do? I give the team to Sam Cassell Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey to see what they can do together. They let Harden walk. They hold on to Tobias Harris one more year and let him play for his NBA future. Harden and Harris are off the books in 2024-25 and they now have room for two max deals because one will be internet in Maxey. Maxey gets a big raise as they drag out re-upping him so they can spend on a second max that summer. There could be good names out there that summer. Truth be told, the right move is likely trading the Embiid asset now but what can I say, he’s my guy and I have a sports crush on him. I heard the other day that Hakeem didn’t win rings until 31 and 33. Embiid is only 29. Maybe they can sign a killer.
