Patriots roster cuts tracker: Pats’ final 7 transactions unknown as deadline passes

By ANDREW CALLAHAN | [email protected] |
PUBLISHED: September 5, 2020 at 8:20 a.m. | UPDATED: September 5, 2020 at 4:11 p.m.
Welcome to one of the busiest days on the NFL calendar.

Today, every NFL team was required to trim its roster down to 53 players for the regular season ahead. The Patriots, who rostered around 80 players during training camp, did not make any transactions Friday, leaving themselves a long to-do list. Their final seven transactions are unknown after the deadline.

You can find every Patriots transaction made through the deadline below on the Herald’s live roster cuts tracker.

Roster at this time is at 60 players.

Can't get the last 7 anywhere.

Really?

"Shortly after news broke that New England had waived rookie Justin Rohrwasser, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported veteran Nick Folk had been cut, as well."

  • For a few minutes, Nick Folk appeared to be the winner of the kicking battle. However, the team decided to release the veteran as well — leaving the roster without a pure place kicker for the moment. [Patriots roster: 57 players]
  • After having played both tight end and linebacker at Ohio State, Rashod Berry saw plenty of time on the defensive side of the ball in Patriots training camp. His versatility and athleticism are intriguing, but not enough to help him make the 53-man roster just yet. [Patriots roster: 58 players]
  • The Patriots invented a fifth-round draft pick in Justin Rohrwasser earlier this year, but the rookie’s inconsistent training camp performance now has him on the outside looking in. His leg strength is intriguing, but was not enough to secure a spot on the team. [Patriots roster: 59 players]

(Jake) "Bailey also handled kickoff duties for Stanford. He produced 118 touchbacks his last two seasons, as he averaged 45.4 and 44.1 yards per kick. He was additionally the Cardinal’s emergency field goal kicker."

"Bailey was a field-goal kicker at Santa Fe Christian High School in California, where he was 12-of-16 as a senior. He went on to Stanford, where he finished his career in 2018 as the school's all-time leader in punting average (43.81)."

Analying the Patriots 53 Man Roster

Henry McKenna

The New England Patriots’ roster has taken shape for Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season. This is, roughly, the group of players the team will use when they face off against the Miami Dolphins.

There’s still plenty of time for adjustment. The Patriots can claim players on waivers. (Those transactions will process tomorrow.) New England will also take the next few days to assemble their practice squad. So the roster work isn’t done. But these are the players that New England has selected for their initial 53-man roster. Let’s look at which players they kept — and which they did not — while doing our best detective work to understand why they composed the roster in this way.

QUARTERBACK (3)

IN: Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer
OUT: Brian Lewerke

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Patriots kept their three quarterbacks that were in the mix to fight for the starting job. Newton, of course, won the job. Stidham will continue to develop. Hoyer is an insurance policy. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see another quarterback end up on the practice squad, whether it’s Lewerke or Josh Rosen.

RUNNING BACK (4)

IN: Sony Michel, Damien Harris, James White, Rex Burkhead
OUT: Lamar Miller, J.J. Taylor

The only surprise in this group was Miller. But I suspect he ends up back on the roster once some shuffling takes place. As for how the Patriots will split up carries, that’s sure to get complicated.

WIDE RECEIVER (6)

IN: Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, Gunner Olszewski, Damiere Byrd, Jakobi Meyers, Matthew Slater
OUT: Mohamed Sanu, Jeff Thomas, Devin Ross, Andre Baccellia, Isaiah Zuber

The Patriots’ decision to cut Sanu may have been the biggest surprise among all their roster moves to get to 53. Even so, there were clear signs, most notably his slow foot speed. He just wasn’t moving well in training camp. Aside from Sanu, this list makes sense. Meyers may have struggled with injuries in training camp, but he had a very impressive rookie season by the Patriots’ standards. They are smart to tolerate a tough camp.

TIGHT END/FULLBACK (4)

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

IN: FB Jakob Johnson, Devin Asiasi, Dalton Keene, Ryan Izzo
OUT: Paul Butler, Paul Quessenberry, Jake Burt

Johnson will start at fullback. Keene and Asiasi will probably split time as the starting tight end, with Asiasi holding a slight edge. And Ryan Izzo holds onto his roster spot, for now. But a few tight ends have hit waivers that might interest the Patriots.

OFFENSIVE LINE (10)

IN: Isaiah Wynn, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Jermaine Eluemunor, Yodny Cajuste, Hjalte Froholdt, Michael Onwenu, Korey Cunningham, Justin Herron
OUT: Ben Braden, Tyler Gauthier

New England has elected to retain a very, very large group of offensive linemen. This is the largest number in recent memory, and that’s got to be because of the uncertainty and inexperience.

DEFENSIVE LINE (5)

IN: Lawrence Guy, Adam Butler, Byron Cowart, Deatrich Wise, Beau Allen
OUT: Bill Murray, Nick Thurman, Xavier Williams

This group looks exactly like it most expected. The Patriots are sure to keep their three-man front, with bigger, versatile linemen like Guy, Buyler and Allen. Cowart and Wise will play situationally.

INSIDE LINEBACKER (4)

IN: Ja’Whaun Bentley, Josh Uche, Anfernee Jennings, Brandon Copeland
OUT: Terez Hall, Scoota Harris, Cassh Maluia

Labelling this group of linebackers — “inside” or “outside” — has been dizzying. They all do both. But it was a little surprising that neither Harris or Maluia made the roster. They certainly put together strong bids.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER (4)

IN: John Simon, Chase Winovich, Shilique Calhoun, Derek Rivers
OUT: Rashod Berry, Tashawn Bower

Simon, Winovich and Calhoun got a huge number of quality snaps during training camp. Rivers, meanwhile, continues to cling to life in New England. He had a few nice practices at training camp, which apparently encouraged New England to hold onto him as a depth player.

CORNERBACK (6)

IN: Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams, Justin Bethel
OUT: D’Angelo Hall, Myles Bryant

Predictable. It looks exactly like it did last year.

SAFETY (5)

IN: Devin McCourty, Kyle Dugger, Adrian Phillips, Cody Davis, Terrence Brooks
OUT: None

They didn’t make a single cut at the safety position. They either like the player’s value on defense (McCourty and Phillips), special teams (Davis) or both (Dugger and Brooks). It’s a very good group.

SPECIALISTS (2)

IN: Jake Bailey, Joe Cardona
OUT: Justin Rohrwasser, Nick Folk

No kicker. I repeat: No kicker. Who will the Patriots sign to kick field goals after cutting both Rohrwasser, a 2020 fifth-round pick, and Folk, the starter for most of 2019. Surely, New England was displeased with the kicking play in training camp.

Good morning Pats fans.....................Buckle up.

Starting at 1:00 PM, NFL teams can build their 16 man Practice Squads. 32 Teams made their roster cuts and not one signed a player released by another team. As of 8 minutes ago, teams can sign players that have been cut but must also immediately release a player from their roster. There are some known players out there like Adrian Peterson and Clinton Ha-Ha Dix. Strang things happened everywhere. Ravens kept two TEs and cut the rest. Cowboys and Raiders cut more veterans that expected.

Our Patriots kept 10 offensive linemen. You know that two of them will be moved to the practice squad, most likely Justin Herron and Michael Onwenu. Those two positions will most likely be WR pick ups. The kicker position will be filled, but expect to see a younger free agent veteran like Matt Gay who played for TB last year for $725K.

Heard the BB slept on the cow couch ("bring your playbook into Coach Belichick") last night.

You know that the Patriots will eventually sign 16 players to the practice squad today, but the moire interesting thing will be filling the 3 positions on the 53 Man Roster.

Tom Curran said last night that he expects BB will make no less than six moves on the roster. He wouldn't say who or what but like everyone else, he knows that the Pats need WRs. There is a buzz that if this was year #3, N'Keal Harry would be on the street. Coaches were not pleased at all with his performances in practices.

Some names to watch for.........Quincy Enunwa, Taylor Gabriel and Cody Latimer. Broncos had high hopes for Latimer and I'm not sure what happened unless they found more and better. Latimer might be a great pickup for this team.

Rasho Berry - athletic freak - the next Jamie Collins?????

Why Patriots Moved Ohio State Tight End Rashod Berry To Defense - NESN.com

Overall, Berry caught 17 passes for 198 yards with four touchdowns and registered seven tackles in his college career. At 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, Berry has the size to play defensive end, outside linebacker, inside linebacker, tight end or even fullback on the Patriots.

He's expected to be the FB inside the five yard line. He played FB in college on nearly every short yardage play. BB loves this guy because he's a player on both sides of the field.

The New England Patriots love shifty, quick wide receivers who can excel playing in the slot. We’ve seen Deion Branch, Troy Brown, Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, and Julian Edelman have great success with the team playing this style. The Patriots have just signed another player who might have a similar makeup. On Sunday, the Patriots added former Division III All-American Mason Kinsey to their practice squad. Very little is known about Kinsey and he wasn’t in camp with the Patriots.

During his time at Berry, Kinsey had 203 receptions for 3,343 yards and 50 touchdowns. He also managed to cross the 100-yard-receiving mark in eight of the 11 games on Berry’s schedule in 2019.
