This is what im wondering? What did we do to improve? You know what answers we are going to get. Lindblom is back Nolan Patrick is back Frost may make the team and so on. Me personally i dont think thats enough.
Well if AV thinks a defense by committee is going to work then I guess we'll see, I don't think it will. Even if you get the offensive guys to buy into a defense first mentality, I think it takes away from their overall offensive abilities in to big of way. Yes control your assignment, but it can't be you top 2 lines adjective game in and game out.

We've been through this before gents the younger players will continue to improve like they did last season which will make them better. What have the pens done to get better but get older? I'm assuming that younger players have more upside than older guys no? The isles are no different they lost tavares but the younger players stepped up and they have been better for it. Would we love to see a stud dman added sure but perhaps they are following the build through the draft blueprint that creates longevity instead of the bandaid approach. If anything they'll add one at the trade deadline when its cheaper and make another run.

The younger players may very well step up and play better but even if that happens does that makes us a top contender? Gee and Jake only have a few years left and this one is probably one of their last in their prime (if they are still in their prime). We need to be in win now mode and the team we have together right now is a solid team to make the playoffs but not a solid cup contender.

We need to get better or another year will slip away. Again.

Talent level is all relative. The 2020-21 Flyers don't look to be much better than the 19-20 Flyers aside from adding Patrick/Frost and a full season of Lindblom, and hoping for progression from the young guys.

But look at the other tams on that list.

TB - Their cap is a disaster. With 12 forwards, 4 dmen, and 2 goalies signed, they're 78.6M. So they have 2.9M to sign Cirelli (their 2C, 53pt pace last year) and their 2nd and 4th best dmen (Sergachev, Cernak). The won the cup, so obviously worth it, but they are definitely taking a step back next year; if not a large one.

Colorado - Legit got better and are scary.

Vegas - Added Pietrangelo which is good obviously, but moved Stastny and Schmidt to do it. Their 2nd best C now has 55 points in 209 NHL games. I think you could make the argument they're not as good.

Boston - Krug out, Chara potentially out. Got worse.

St. Louis - Pietrangelo out. Krug replaces some of it, but that's definitely a step back. They're also over the cap.

Dallas - Basically running it back with the same team.

So of the 6 teams that we think are better on paper than the Flyers, one got better and one stayed level. The rest got worse.

Obviously I'd like to see the Flyers improve more. They have a little bit of wiggle room and can probably move an asset (Ghost) to get more wiggle room. But I think they're in the conversation for contenders. In a salary cap NHL world, you want to be in that conversation as often as possible and hope the breaks fall your way.

Plus, as FFF said, there's still a trade deadline to make moves. The Flyers on paper right now are plenty good enough to make the playoffs. I'm willing to wait it out to see what they look like heading into the deadline. If Frost/Patrick don't work out, 3C is a more critical add. If the defense doesn't work out, that's the more critical add. I'm willing to wait to see which is more important.

We are actually not bad. We can roll 3 great lines and a 4th good one if everyone stays healthy. However we were exposed on defense and need to tighten that up. I thought just a good solid player with some size would be great but we'll see. Hopefully at the trade deadline you're able to find that guy if needed.

This is where we differ. You say a team like Boston with Krug out Chara out got worse but even with them out their defense with Gryzelcyk, Mcavoy and Brandon Carlo is still better than ours So it doesnt matter that they got worse they are still better than we are with our poor defense . Their offense is still just as good. That's only one team if i looked at the rest of the teams that you say got worse id probably find more stuff to counter your point. Not to mention the teams that are better like Carolina and Isles that aren't on the list.

Gee and Jake arent getting any younger.

Our defense right now is not good enough to win a cup. It was only good enough with Nisky who arguably was our best dman last year to only beat a 71 point Canadien team in a playoff series.

All I'm saying is they got worse. Doesn't mean the Flyers are necessarily better than them now. I already stated that I don't think they are. But by the Flyers keeping the status quo, and those teams getting worse, the Flyers are closer in talent level to those teams than they were at the end of last season.

I was only looking at teams that are/were better than the Flyers by a consensus. I already said they're in conversation with the Canes/Isles as to who is better on paper. And both of those teams are just praying in net.

Provorov was their best dman.

Niskanen was good, and will be missed. But saying he was our best dman is just trying to be as negative as possible.

I can agree with that for now .We will know next season if Prov was really as good as he showed this season and got better or if he turns back into the turnover machine he was the season before without Nisky.

Im looking at it this way. Gee and Jake aren't getting any better as well as the great JVR the older they get so we need to get into win now mode. We are deep enough as an organization to make trades and not have it effect our ablility to be a contender going forward.

I agree with that for sure. They should be doing nearly everything they can to increase their chances in the next 1-3 years while G/Jake are still star caliber players. This should be their best chance to contend.

I'm OK with that coming at the deadline. But barring massive jumps in play from the young guys (not likely), they should be adding to this roster before the 2021 playoffs.

I can agree with this except id like to start out the year crushing teams and not look back from jump.

I have a separate question. If they only play 50 to 60 games this season do the players get paid full contract or does it get pro rated?

I think the players already agreed to a paycut for next year. Going to be paid like 71% of their original salary or something as a way to help owners break even with no attendance. I saw a tweet the other day that said the players expect the owners to ask for more if it's a pro-rated season, but they will resist.

I think the original cut was agreed to in the Return to Play agreement for both last season and next season.
