He's been helping him some already and it doesn't look like its helping much. Plus, its not like he did anything with Michael Carter Williams, a player that's similar to Lonzo skillwise. So if helping Lonzo is a selling point the Lakers are trying to make, its not a great one.

Hiring Vogel and insisting on Kidd being on the staff, the Lakers are essentially holding a lighter in one hand and an open container of gasoline. They are just begging for problems and dissension. If they liked Kidd so much, they just should have hired Kidd to be HC. But apparently they want their coaching staff to match their front office decision process by having too many voices in the room all with different agendas

Not sure what to think of Vogel.

He did well with the Pacers and if not for Lebron and the Heat, may very well have at least made a finals appearance or 2. But he was pretty bad with the Magic.

As for Kidd...I tend to agree with @wildturkey that this is a potentially combustible situation.

Hopefully, Kidd has learned from some of the shady type stuff he's done and won't try to undermine Vogel to try and get the HC job for himself. But I'm not holding my breath.

At the very least, they went outside of the "friends and family" hiring that they've been doing. If they do the same with the PBO and allow him to do his job, they may be able to salvage this.

Michael Carter williams never has and never will have the potential that Lonzo has. Poor comparison. With Kid full time with Lonzo, maybe Lonzo will reach his potential, perpetual debbie downer lol

It's not a poor comparison though. Their skillsets are similar. Both are tall guards that were pegged to be good distributing PGs but can't shoot for shit. Kidd didn't help his game at all. There's nothing in Kidd's coaching career that suggests he has a real, positive impact on coaching and development. In fact, its the opposite. He's burned bridges and there's been negative opinions from players and other teams officials everywhere he's been. Saying he'll be good for Lonzo is just a sentiment based on wishful thinking

I'm actually fine with Vogel. Kidd shouldn't be there though

Ok. I do understand. Kidd may be a problem. We will see. I hope he helps Lonzo this year and moves on to coach another team after next year. He has to rehab his image as well.

If memory serves, Giannis swears by him and was very upset when the Bucks fired him.

As for Kidd...it all depends on him and how he handles this. The Lakers couldn't hire him as HC because of the very things you described (plus DUI and domestic violence allegations).

If he understands that this is an opportunity to rehab his image and behaves accordingly, it should be fine and could help Lonzo's development.

On the other hand, if he doesn't understand this, then it could end up being a looong season. Hopefully, the Lakers will hire a strong PBO who can prevent/stop that shit if it starts up.

Giannis says nice things about everyone though. He liked Larry Drew as well. He's just a positive dude. The rest of the Bucks hated him. I remember a story of Malcolm Brogdan passive aggressively bashing in the media for Kidd's in game adjustments. Turns out one time Brogdan didn't get inserted back into the game because Kidd literally forgot about him. Then there's loads of stories about Kidd playing mind games with his players and negging them behind their backs. He had the same clouds around him with the Nets as well. The guy is just poison. It's no accident the Bucks go from a .500 team to a legit championship contender with largely the same roster except for the coach

I'm fine with that. His defense was atrocious.

He has already been working with Lonzo.

Report: Jason Kidd helped mentor Lonzo Ball last year

Now that the Lakers have the fourth overall pick in this year's draft, all of the crazy-ass scenarios are emerging as to the notion the Lakers should trade this pick primarily in a package deal to secure AD-AGAIN. Why do I get the distinct impression that Pelinka/Rambis is going to eff this whole thing up?

Some of the floated scenarios include another bizarre seven/eight-player swap for AD including two number ones in 2021 and 2023 and Lonzo, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, and now Bonga, and Wagner. We would get AD and the overall number six pick this year. That scenario has the Dwightmare trade written all over it. If that is what this comes down to, the FO has lost their mind. Their obsession with AD is bordering on the insane.

A way better scenario that I have read about is the Lakers waiting a year for the one-year rental contract AD is most likely to sign this summer with another team to expire and pick him-up next year when he is a true FA. Then they can keep their 4th overall pick this year, pick-up some serious talent, and dispel this cancer that is eating the young core alive that eventually they are going to be out the door.

Somehow, Jeanie is going to have to get a handle on this FO insanity or else the Lakers are going nowhere out of the damn hole they have been in for the last six years, no matter who the flippin coach is!

    I agree Retro

Gutting the team and several 1st round picks to get AD would be stupid, both short term and especially long term.

A team of LeBron and AD and a bunch of fillers is not going to beat the top teams in the West. You need quality depth. AD and LeBron can't play 48 every single game.

Keep the pick, make a good selection and go from there.

Enough with the insane (3) 1st rounders and the bulk of the Lakers young core for AD. That's just insane.

Yea it is ALR but somehow I am thinking Pelinka is going to go that route without any hindrance from others in the upper echelon of the Lakers FO. Flippin FO is off their rockers if they go down that avenue!

If they do that, it will probably ruin the franchise for many more years.

They are already in their longest ever playoff drought. That will continue if they do something as crazy as trading (3) 1st rounders and their top young talent for AD.

AD is a star, but he's not worth all of that.

i just read NO will never trade AD to the Lakers, so that seems to end that. I dont want to give up our whole team for AD. Use the pick or use it to get beal.

The most credible scenario that's out right now is that the Lakers trade the #4 pick, Lonzo, Ingram, Kuzma and (I believe) the 2022 first round pick for AD and Solomon Hill. That offer would likely be beaten by the Celtics if they believe they can get AD to sign long term and by the Knicks, no matter what (especially if they think they can get KD and/or Kyrie).

Another possibility is sending Lonzo to the Suns for the #6 pick, then sending the #4 and #6 pick in this years draft, Ingram, Kuzma and a future first to the Pels for AD and Solomon Hill. That would be a much tougher offer to beat. Although the Celtics still could if they are willing to part with both Tatum and Brown. The Knicks could beat it if they are willing to throw in their Dallas picks.

As for a team of AD, Lebron and filler...that's not what they would be looking to do. The idea would be to add another top tier FA to Lebron and AD. They could do this because they would be trading for AD, thus leaving them cap space.

A team led by say, Lebron, AD and maybe Kyrie or Jimmy Butler would be damn tough to beat. It also wouldn't be too difficult to get some solid vets on lower dollar deals to fill out the roster.

Regardless of how we may feel about it, the instant the Lakers signed Lebron, they became a "win now" team. So, I fully expect that the Lakers will be moving that #4 pick and at least 2 of the kids (or trying like hell to anyway) this off-season.

We just need to hope that the players they get will be young enough to continue winning for a few years after Lebron declines/retires.

Personally, I like another option for the Lakers that I think could put them in contention and still keep a couple of the kids and the #4 pick could really help with it.

If I'm the Lakers, I think that I would look to send the #4 pick and either Lonzo and Kuzma or Ingram and Hart and a future first to the Wizards for Bradley Beal and then look to sign Vucevic or even Boogie.

I'd prefer Vucevic, but they should be able to get Boogie for less because of his injury, which would leave them a little more cap space to add better quality role players.
