both are no more than a #3 or lower. are you going to pay them 10+M a season for that?

You can get Mikolas on the cheap compared to Cobb. Saddles is right about reported price for Cobb. 10 mill won't get it done for him.

maybe but we could still get both for less than the QO for Cashner. it would be a win situation for the Rangers in my eyes

Looks like Gabe Kapler is going to be the new Phillies manager.

We won't be able to get both of them for less than Cashner's QO unless Mikolas agrees to pay us to let him pitch here.

so you think Cobb is going to paid #1 starter money? that means you expect him to sign a 5 or 6 year deal for somewhere in the $135 to 150M area?

Your figures are wrong. The QO is expected to be $17.4 million. As I said the other day Cobb is expected to get a contract with an AAV of just north of $18 million. If Cobb gets a 5 year deal that would be a total of about $91 million.

okay just read some articles on his projected contract and you are right and i was wrong. but i would still rather have him and Mikolas than Cashner even at 5 years $91M for Cobb and whatever for Mikolas

Oh, I would too. In fact, if it was a choice of Cobb or Cashner I would choose Cobb. But then last year at this tim I said I would choose Holland over Cashner--speaking of being wrong.

yeah but Cobb is not Holland and has better ceiling than either Holland or Cashner. of course there are teams like the Cardinals who may want Cobb as much or more than we do

The practice of throwing an opposing team's HR ball back onto the field was prominent in last night's game and that makes me wonder again why fans are allowed to do that. I have never understood doing that and I have never understood why it is tolerated. They tell you to not throw anything on the field and then never do anything to anyone who follows that odd tradition. That practice will come to a screeching halt some day when a fan or player gets hit in the back of the head with a ball that is thrown back.

Rangers position outlook: Shortstop is in good hands with Elvis Andrus in his prime

ON THE ROSTER
Hanser Alberto: Pre-arbitration

Elvis Andrus: Signed through 2022 with opt-out clause following 2018

Jurickson Profar: Arbitration eligible

WHAT THEY DID WELL
Elvis Andrus was the Rangers' most consistent offensive player. He set career highs for the second consecutive year, most notably in OPS (.808) and home runs (20). He was named a Gold Glove finalist for his work at shortstop. He became a dad. Based on individual performance, it was a career year for Andrus.

WHAT THEY DIDN'T
Though he certainly wasn't alone on a team that set a franchise mark for strikeouts, Andrus had career worsts in strikeouts per plate appearance (6.82) and total strikeouts (101). Some of it is an acceptable tradeoff for the increases in power he showed. The next step for him would be to pare his strikeout rate back a little while maintaining the increased power.

WHAT'S IN A NUMBER

Andrus became the ninth shortstop in history to have at least 20 homers and 25 steals in the same season. The last was Jimmy Rollins, who accomplished in 2012, one of four seasons in which he had at least 20 homers and 25 steals. Next year, Andrus will be aiming to join Rollins, Hanley Ramirez (four) and Alex Rodriguez (two) as the only shortstops with multiple 20-25 seasons.

WHAT'S ON THE FARM
Chris Seise was one of the Rangers' two first-round picks in 2017 and was ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect by mlb.com at the end of the season. 19-year-old Anderson Tejada might have the most offensive upside of anybody in the system, but might profile better as a second baseman. Whether Miguel De Leon will ever hit enough to be a major leaguer is a question, but he's got great hands. And to this point, this list doesn't include Josh Morgan or Isiah Kiner-Falefa, two utility players who are most at home at shortstop.

For the record I would rather have Cobb than Cashner. In case we do not land Otani. Would not be terrible if we got Cobb and Mikolas.

I would want to make a run for Yu first and then turn to Cobb if that doesn't work out.

Agree. I think we need to get one pitcher early though. Like to get before winter meetings or at least during it
