If we got Darvish and Otani, I would trade Hamels for more pitching. Hard to think we could get both but anything is possible. I hate losing Darvish. He could have done better but still very under appreciated in my book.

I think one of minor league starters will emerge for the number 5 spot

We are going to have to figure out who we keep too and who we roster and protect from Rule 5 late this year
If we got both Otani and Darvish maybe the Dodgers would be interested in Hamels.

Doubt he would accept a QO

I agree but we could make the offer after he rejects. Cashner had a great year but we seem to protect out SP. wish we had guys who pitch 7 innings regularly for us. Really makes us have to have a lock down pen which was surely not that this year. The year of the failed Pen

I believe everyone is up for trade if the price is right. Not likely we we offer Elvis Nomar or Joey. Besides them we have very little to offer that would get us much value in return. Hamel would be the exception. Did I miss someone?

If we could trade Choo and cash for a AA pitcher who is projected to be a #4 or #5 starter I would be fine with that. If we could trade Odor for a AA or AAA pitcher who projects to be a #3 I would be fine with that.

Cashner is not under contract and I don't think they offer more than the tender and then hedge bets with at best a 2 year offer. No guarantees at SP other than Perez and Hamels.

I understand that Cashner is not under contract, but no matter which way you look at it, he pitched well enough to be retained. We have 3 big holes to fill and he would quickly make it 2.

Thankfully that's something we don't have to worry about.
I will be as confident as you are when the personnel moves point in that direction. That hasn't been the case for a few years now in my opinion. You may have seen the last few years teams as having been built to compete for a WS title, but I haven't seen it that way myself.

2016 absolutely was built to compete for the World Series title. 2017 should have been, but most of the team took a step back.

Quick Hits: Otani, Rangers, Rays, Cozart, Paulino

The Rangers seem like one of the four or five teams most likely to sign Otani, and possibly the favorite “if it comes down to the dollars available and a college-recruiting like pitch,” Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News writes as part of a reader chat. Still, Grant doesn’t believe any team has more than a 15-18% chance of signing Otani, since any number of factors could influence his choice.

I have no problem with you thinking that way, I just strongly disagree.

Little is known about Shohei Otani’s preferred destination if he makes the jump to Major League Baseball this offseason, though in a profile of the two-way star, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times wonders if Otani’s reputation as a “yakyu shonen” (as Hernandez puts it, “basically, a kid who lives, eats and breathes baseball”) could provide some hints. Otani is believed to be intent on coming to MLB for competitive reasons given his outward lack of interest in money. For this same reason, Otani may not necessarily be swayed by a wealthy team like the Dodgers or Yankees, according to Hiroshi Sasaki, Otani’s former high school coach. When choosing schools, Otani chose to play for a lower-profile high school closer to home rather than accept offers from larger programs.

My first thought for 2018 is what is Beltre's intent? He could effect the way FO does business.
he wants to stay and eventually retire as a Rangers but he doesn't want to be part of a rebuilding process that might take 2, 3 or 4 years to carry out. This seems to be the plan so i would allow him to find a team that would be a competitor for a WS ring and trade him for whatever we can get.

At least we picked up Cashner. Lol.

Thinking it will be very difficult to start Guzman and Calhoun unless we move Choo which could happen. However despite the trend guys who make contact especially when needed in late innings has trended down for Rangers.

We need SP
Choo is the DH no team is going to take on his contract. Use Calhoun in left, Mazara in right. Give Beltre his wish and trade him to a WS competitor, put Gallo at 3rd and Guzman at 1st. We have Hamels and Perez so pick up a couple of cheap middle to lower level (3, 4 & 5) rotation and just play out the 2018 season working toward the 2020 or 2021 seasons as when we become legitimate aga
