In hindsight, seeing as the canucks didnt even attempt to re-sign matthias last summer, they should have made that type of trade last deadline :L ... But ... had to make the playoffs, amirite frankie :L

Torres is being loaned to AHL San Jose so it's just a salary swap. Two seconds is good return for Polak.

Hmmm? Im of the opinion that the canucks should keep Hansen and the sedins and by default sutter ... I think 4 vets is good enough and then go with kids ... but what would be the return on Hansen

/oh and i dont like the way this botchford blurb ends

BEST TRADE BAIT

Enter Jannik Hansen. Him and his 19 goals.

If there really is going to be a yard sale this week, he does make for an interesting conversation. Signed for two more years at a pretty freaking great $2.5 million cap hit, he is just the kind of player who should have contenders drooling.

He can play virtually anywhere in your lineup.

He’s fast as eff. He’s unrelenting in the corners. He’s experienced. He’s got that contract, which means a contender can give up a significant package and know they’ve not only got him for a couple of years, they’ve got an incredibly cap friendly deal.

And he’s having one helluva season.

Sir Hansen now has 16 even strength goals, and, this is going to blow your mind, he’s scoring 1.38 goals-per-60 minutes played.

That is third in the league, behind only Ovechkin and Seguin.

Now, what exactly would someone like this be worth at the deadline?

Is he worth a first and a prospect, ala the offer that allegedly was placed out there for Ladd?

What about a first? Would that be too much to turn down?

He is 29. This would be “selling high.”

Feel free to speculate.

But here’s the thing on Hansen. He’s incredibly valuable to the Canucks. He can work with the Sedins, sure, but he could also move down the lineup and carry a couple of young players if you didn’t want them to, say, drown.

You need some good players left, veterans, even if you’re desperate for more youth to be infused into the lineup.

Is he too valuable to trade?

He may be.

Plus, if they were to trade him, who would play with the Sedins next year?

Oh ya, Lucic…

good job on this one for Bennington as well :L

Last year, the Canucks did discuss a possible Matthias trade before the deadline.

Their belief was that they could get a “third or a fourth” for him. They passed before they got too far down the “trade Matthias” road.

The decision wasn’t without merit. They Canucks were on the way to the playoffs. A post-season where they were about to be matched gainst a team they could beat.

Really, a team they should have beat.

Matthias at evens was a goal generator. He finished the season scoring 1.08 goals per 60 minutes played.

He ranked 15th in the league, tied with Jamie Benn, with a better ES goal-scoring rate than Malkin, OV and Getzlaf.

Matthias can be a useful player. He has size. He can play any forward position. He can play up and down the lineup. So, I’ not surprised

Last year, he as on a cheaper expiring contract ($1.75 m compared to $2.3m), and scoring at a much higher rate. (This year, with his six goals, his goals-per-60 is down to 0.62).

Was he really worth about the same he was this year?

Hmmm

Not to de-rail this thread, but the Flames won the season series against the Canucks last season and have already won the season series against the Canucks this season with one game remaining.

If Polak can get two 2nd round picks, Kris Russell should be able to fetch the equivalent right?

I just hope the Jackets can trade a bottom 2 D man for a #1 center just like they traded a 4th line center for a #1 D.

Assuming they can get at least 2 more picks before the deadline, that is insane. Scouting dept. better be up to the task.

Yeah. It is pretty crazy. If their scouting does the job, they're going to have a serious bottleneck of prospects in a few years. They'll have to move some of those picks out for (ideally) more NHL ready assets I would think.

If Babcock hears you talking about Spaling like hes nothing of value you're going to finally see his "angry face".
