Then there's this: Mets are looking for a reliever in their Bruce/Granderson trade discussions with the O's.
I really wish the Giants would stay put on outfielders. There is no one, in my opinion, worth the cost. Williamson and Parker really should get a shot.

Bobby Evans seems to agree. He's been adamant about MacParker in LF. They'll probably stay course unless a golden opportunity arises.

This is where I would like us to be, but I have a gut feeling (no sources or anything) that a starting OF will be brought in. I want us to go with McParker/Gorkys in left and/or Span/Gorkys in center.

Posey will play for team USA in the WBC.

I guess you gotta let him do it if he wants (especially since this may be the last year for it) but I don't want him putting in all these inning behind the dish.

Wonder if we could get Jarrod Dyson on a 1-2 year deal until one of the kids is ready....or maybe as part of a platoon with one of them.

But I would rather go with Gorkys McParker...

I don't see the team getting a 4th OF type player. They will go big or sit tight, I think.

Chapman is looking for 6 years and Jansen is looking for $80M+ over 4.

Sounds like the Giants are still in the market for another reliever. J.P. Howell has come up. It does make me think, the Giants are probably involved in the trade market for an outfielder, and I wonder if they are dangling Okert and Osich is deals.

Not per Bobby:

Chris Haft/SF Giants ‏@sfgiantsbeat 17m17 minutes ago Alexandria, VA

Evans: Core of SF bullpen is set for 2017 with Strickland, Law, Okert, Osich, Gearrin and Kontos. Said club will add nonroster competition

The cost for him is too high, in my opinion. Lot of talent, but that the huge drop off in production sends up huge red flags for me.
Isn't that spelled "yuge" now?

Dyson is not a free agent, we'd have to trade for him and I'd assume his price would be pretty hefty. I wouldn't mind him at all for his defense (honestly, he's a better all-around player than Span at this point).

I actually think he'd be a decent fit, not with the bat though. But he could fill in Blanco's role and probably do it better. But for the cost, is it worth it?

We have Gorkys for the Blanco job. Why look out of the org?

I like Gorkys, and I don't think we have to actively pursue Dyson. But he's a proven elite defender and speed demon, while Gorkys has been with 7 teams. He's an upgrade. If the cost isn't much, why not.

You mentioned that his price would probably be pretty hefty. If that is truly the case, then no way. The guy is 32 (I am always surprised when I see his age but it seems like he hasn't been around for very long), he set a career high in at bats this year (299) as well as OPS (.728). He comes across as a better defending version of Ben Revere.

In any way, I'd only be okay with either Revere or Dyson if we could get rid of Denard Span. That was a bad contract to begin with and its only going to get worse.

Melancon has an interesting contact:

2017: $4M
2018: $10M
opt-out
2019: $14M
2020: $14M

He also received a $20M signing bonus to bring the total to $62M. He'll receive $12M up front (not a bad day). Also gets a full no-trade clause.

Very similar to Cueto's deal.

The signing bonus does not count against the payroll, I believe, but I'll need to verify that. Would save space against the luxury tax if so.

That is very interesting that the Giants talked him in to $4 million for the first year, with the opt out two years in. Does that mean the Giants have given up on signing Bumgarner to an extension?

Went to a charity event at AT&T tonight with the kids...got to run around on the field and roast marshmallows, then on to the club level for games and stuff. Only Giants there were Noah Lowry (!) and Mac Williamson, got a pic and autograph with him. He's pretty jazzed about Melancon. I told him no more FAs, I want him in left. He did an 'aw shucks'.

Well, he's making $16M next year. $12M in bonuses, $4M in salary. Just gives them flexibility in the short-term to make more moves. I don't think this has anything to do with Bum.
