Taillon out for the year with a Hernia...

Is this the first time we have burned options/40-man roster spots instead of giving MLB service time to injured players?

Neither Kingham or Taillon are on the DL.

What are you getting at here?

I'm sure both will be moved to the 60-day if a 40-man spot is needed.

As for realistic trade targets, Mike Napoli would be a nice bench bat/DH/platoon partner at 1st base.

Looks like Ishikawa is coming back for bench help while Marte is out.

Cole, Burnett, Melancon, and of course McCutchen were named to the All-Star team.

Neither Kingham or Taillon are on the DL.

I am not really sure I understand the question. kingham and Taillon are on the 40 man but not the 25 man. Therefore putting them on the 60 day DL does very little. Possibly in September it would be an issue, but currently, it doesn't matter much. If I am not mistaken, they are both on the minor league DL, which is what really matters.

Probably not going to happen, but with Harrison out, I'd like to see Hanson get a look, at least briefly. He is just coming off DL himself, so I doubt it will be anytime soon though, if at all.

I didn't want to think about Napoli as a trade target, but he's actually been decent against lefties this year, a wRC+ of 119. He'd be a clear bench upgrade, and would be a more viable offensive option for the late-inning defensive sub at 1B.

Beyond that, he'll be practically free. Might as well give him a look.

Scouting the stat line says he probably lost some bat speed, as his soft% is up from last year, and well up his career average.

And he has a limited no trade clause, and he took less money to sign in Boston last time he was a free agent, so there must something there.

But yeah, I can't imagine it takes much more than a C+ prospect or two get him.

Pirates looking at Ben Revere and Jeff Francoeur supposedly. Revere, I can understand, except where he would play. Frenchy, I don't understand.

Either would just be bench help, I have to imagine. Though I'd rather give Decker a look before acquiring anyone from outside the organization for that role.

Frenchy's a pretty good defensive player, and he'd probably be an okay hitter if we only used him in a bench role so he didn't get overexposed (like Sean Rodriguez has been, unfortunately).

I like the idea of Revere although I don't think he fits what they need, but he would definitely help the bench, speed, and is a good defensive player. He seems like he fits more on a team that really needs a CF upgrade.

I don't like Francouer. Francouer still has the arm, but the range seems like it's slipping, and that .277 OBP.

Pirates notebook: 'Extreme' seller's market expected at trade deadline | TribLIVE

“It's a seller's market, so there are fewer teams that are looking to trade established major league players for prospects,” Huntington said. “The impatience of the industry. The expectation that you can turn an organization around in a year. Rather than (targeting) the best prospect in the system that may be in A-ball, teams are starting to look for the guy in Triple-A that might have an impact in a year or two.”

In part because of the second wild card, Huntington described the trade market as an “extreme” seller's market.

“It doesn't mean deals won't be made. It doesn't mean we won't be in the middle of things,” Huntington said. “(But) we're in a good spot. There is not a glaring hole where we may vastly have to overpay. … At the same time, we want to help this club. This club has worked hard to make itself a playoff contender.”

Interesting quote from NH.

Anyone else chapped that AJ did not get used in his one and only All-Star appearance?

He wasn't, so why should I be. I'd rather he stay fresh for the second half and he seemed to enjoy himself a lot watching the younger Pirate players.

Still, I felt bad for him, even though he played it off. I guess only players like Rivera and Jeter get to have All-Star retirement send-offs.

BTW, your username looks familiar. Did you used to post on the Maximum Grilled Steelers board? I haven't posted there in years.

We're going to be without Mercer for a while, I suspect. We already needed an upgrade at first base for the lineup, but we need it now more than ever, and maybe an infield bench upgrade as well with Mercer down.
