too bad e couldn't get something for mazzaro alone or packaged with something to upgrade our roster or for a 3b, ss, 1b, or c for a couple years from now.
we have so many arms and not enough bats.
the league is starving for pitchers who can throw strikes, stay healthy, and keep the ball in the park.

Mazzarro is still likely to be traded, Pirates have 9 more days. According to NH, the holdup with trading him was not waiting for offers, but the teams with offers on the table waiting for the Pirates to get back to them. Regardless, I don't expect much of a return. He is a pretty decent pitcher, but not a guy you trade value for, especially when he will be a FA in a week and a half.

alone, not much, but thought packaged with another AAA or AA starter might net something. even with one of the AA OF not named meadows. selling them off as one at a time will never net much, but putting 2 or 3 arms together to help really replenish pitching starved organizations might get a decent bat.

So who would you be willing to package and who are you wanting to bring back in a trade? Do you focus on a major league first baseman or do you look to get the best player possible? It is easy to say just package him with someone else, but for what? Right now as we sit here today, I think best case scenario would be to trade him for a PTBNL. That way you get something for hi., and could conceivably get better value by letting some of the season play out. Focus on last years draft picks in the return and see how they are looking this season. Possibly someone you were looking at in the later rounds that someone grabbed before you could get them. Just a thought.

unfortunately, i do not follow other teams other than philly as i live here.
I would assume some teams are deep with pitching while others are deep with hitters, or have a young person in the majors blocking another soon to be ready(1-2 years) prospect with some ceiling.

for the right deal (age, position, ceiling), i would be willing to trade mazzaro, one of the young catchers (we have 3 good prospects including sanchez), another pitcher of the joeley, sadler (AA type or even AAA not taillon or king ham) and a OF like rojas, ramirez, etc.

I wouldn't trade one of our top 5 pitching prospects, but almost anyone else other than polanco or meadows would be possible, even bell for a 1B.
Ideally the person is ready 2nd half of this year and really ready to go next year (or even this if we find the right partner that needs several pieces for 1. we need a 1B and a SS. then hanson can play 2B and lead off if he can handle it.

Wait, didn't the Tigers win their first two games in walkoff fashion as well. Since their 2nd game ended before ours, that would put them first.

Maybe they meant to say two straight extra-inning wins?

I'm not sure if it will continue, but the Pirates have been a lot better early on this year of working counts and drawing walks. Even though they're only 9th in the NL in batting average, they're 4th in OBP. So far, they're tied for third in the league in walks drawn, and they've struck out less so far than any other NL team.

If they keep this up, it seems likely the offense will actually be better this year than last year.

Oh, and as an added bonus, we've been hit by the most pitches.

I think Snider will break out this year. It will be interesting to see if the Pirates trade Snider, Tabata or both when Polanco is up.

Ishikawa has been a nice surprise. Hopefully it is the changes he made at the plate and it isn't just a hot start.

If Volquez has another strong start then the rotation looks promising with a couple arms in AAA for depth.

Patience by Marte and Alvarez should really boost the lineup.

Mercer is the biggest concern to me.

With Mercer what worries me the most is the total lack of any viable replacement.

McCutchen is being walked a ton but he has k'ed a few noticable times in situations with runners in scoring position when the game was on the line. I wonder if the walks start coming down/better pitches will start coming up now that Alvarez is hitting well?

Lots of Ks and lots of walks at the same time is consistent with pitchers nibbling against him. They're not going to give him anything to hit. If they hit the edges, they might get a strikeout, but they'll take their chances with the walk.

But you can't do that to two guys back-to-back, and Alvarez is usually making them pay.

McCutchen usually starts out a bit slow, though, so I'm sure he'll make the adjustment and start hitting soon.
