Don't understand why they would trade Tabata, solid 4th OF, and there isn't a ready replacement for the 4th OF spot. Snider has shown next to nothing at the ML level for years.

That is the issue without trading away a prospect they really don't have enough extra value outside their bullpen, that is my only thought about Tabata.

Then the issue with bullpen help, it never has value until the trade deadline.

I think the Tabata rumors are simply because the only player that has stepped up in RF is Dickerson and they would like to keep him. That way they would have him as platoon at 1B also once Polanco comes up.

I forgot about Decker they have him as well. And Dickerson is definitely interesting. If they can land another asset to fill a hole, I guess trading Tabata makes some sense. But really their only place to upgrade is 1B, maybe they can do Tabata+reliever for Smoak or Carp.

Exactly, and even then were talking about Hughes or Mazzaro or Morris, mainly middle relief on a good team. I suppose you could get a decent defensive first backup catcher for one of those guys, but not much more.

Pirates, D'Backs Have Discussed Didi Gregorius: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

This would be interesting, not a huge Didi Gregorious fan but I do like left handed shortstops.

I'm actually pretty high on Mercer for this year. I think he can be a league average bat, and league average defense, and come in about 3 WAR for the year.

I really like Gregorius, actually. He's one of the smoother defenders at the position I've seen in person. But I like Mercer's bat quite a bit more, and I'm not sure this move would really do all that much to help our team.

The next week should be interesting with the potential trades.

Does Gregarious mean Mercer will move to second so the Pirates can do a Walker for Lind trade?
Barmes to the Mets with Mercer and Gregarious as a platoon at short?

With Barmes in the picture, there has to be a second piece to trading for Gregarious.

Maybe the Diamondbacks match up better for trade return than the Mets do and it is Gregarious to the Pirates for a piece the Diamondbacks want and then Gregorious to the Mets for Ike Davis?

Maybe Clint Barmes has lost a step and the Pirates will release him and keep Mercer and Gregorious.

Just some thoughts.

So Didi and short, Mercer at 2nd, and Lind at 1st. With no Walker and say (Locke and reliever for arguments sake) sounds like a downgrade in talent to me.

For all of NW's problems, his average year is about the top end of what we could expect from Mercer with the bat. And Lind, he's had two years of acceptable 1st base performance, and 5 years that he has hit like a shortstop, seems like a risk.

Element,

I am not looking to see the Pirates land Lind. Just trying to figure out how Didi would fit into the picture. Most of the trades that become public never materialize.

Fair enough, was just commented on the proposal. I think the second one make more sense with a three deal for Ike Davis.

there has to be a secondary trade,
can't imagine giving up a starter when we are being hit with some injuries and question marks unless we are getting a 1B of significance (younger and decent potential) in return.

i like mercer hitting and believe he will outperform waker if given the same amount of AB. Mercer's OPS was better and he batted in a terrible spot in the order most of the year, with occasional games at #2.

i am a bit concerned in his focus at SS as he seems to have an occasional lapse and makes an error on a not very difficult play.

That actually seems like a pretty decent move, logical for all three teams. The D-Backs might want something we have, pitching depth, for example, especially in light of Corbin's injury. The Mets have basically no confidence in Tejada at short, and are likely looking for an upgrade. Gregorius fills that need for the Mets, but they're also looking to deal Davis. Davis doesn't really fit the needs the D-Backs have, though. So we get our first baseman, the Mets get their shortstop, and the D-Backs get their pitcher.

I like that 3 way deal. Davis could help the Pirates I know they like Lambo but none of the 1B options in ST have been jumping out outside of Ishikawa. Who I REALLY hope does not make the team.

I just hope they don't do something stupid and sign Juan Francisco.

Snider is at least making me cautiously optimistic. He came to camp this year in much better shape, and he's by-and-large been hitting this spring. I don't think he's an unrealistic option at first, though there's some risk associated with it.

It's good to get the groundwork for a deal like this laid down for now, though. Three-way deals like this sometimes take some time to iron out, and I'd rather have at least the premise of it done before we start floundering with poor offense.

And even if Snider does end up hitting a ton, we could utilize him in right field just as easily even after the Davis acquisition, so we can pull the trigger early, too.

Interesting thing with Snider is the fact of how his camp has been going I am not as worried about RF with Snider/Tabata until Palanco is ready. I am worried about 1B and no one in camp even Sanchez has been playing well.

Then with Mercer at SS everyday I think a better glove is needed at 1B. Sanchez is fine there but the left handed side of that if Lambo might be rough. If it is Ishikawa then defense is not an issue but the thought of Ishikawa/Sanchez hitting behind Martin or Alvarez, neither of them two will never get a pitch to hit.

I'm thinking Isikawa makes the team out of ST. Would be a very NH thing to do. Keep the vet on a temporary basis, send Lambo to AAA. If Isikawa struggles dump him and bring up Lambo. And really I don't think Lambo would be hurt by a month or two in AAA.

I think he calls them 'reversible moves,' I think the same thinking will apply to Locke/Volquez. Keep the vet and if he really struggles release him and bring Locke back up.
