The way he performs with a declining k/9 and swing and miss percentage

I read just this morning how he's really changed over the past few seasons from a SO pitcher to a contact/ground ball pitcher and has done so quite successfully.

I say again, don't see the downside at all to this trade.

Offset by an increased ground ball rate and walk rate, meaning fewer pitches per inning

He's become a different kind of pitcher since 2011 and he's had some hiccups but still an effective pitcher, just not worth 13 million, but 9 million for one year, sign me up

I'm surprised you didn't include Mitch Williams with him.

Less you forget.....Mitch "the former Wild Thing" is now unemployed. Got fired for showing his normal self at a kids baseball game if memory serves.

I've been terminated from employment in my life and it sucks. Therefore, I try, and try hard, not to dance on someone's financial grave.

But in Mitch's case.....piss on that A-Hole. I hope to never see him again on the national stage.

It addresses the most pressing need - a starting pitcher - at a very reasonable salary and with minimal effect on the roster/farm system.

This is a deal you want your GM making 10/10 times.

Not to mention Detweiler still looks like a nice pick up.

How much better does the rotation look today vs the end of the season. Darvish Holland Gallardo Lewis Deteiler/Tepesch. Not a bad rotation folks.

Whoa...That means he's not on Fox of MLB network anymore?

7 yrs, 210 mil for Scherzer. Wow... Just wow. Is there no limit to how absurd these pitching contracts will get? :L

Damn, last I heard it was 7/180. Where did the other 30 million come from?

Not sure if this was posted but I did not see it but it is like winning the lottery.

From Ken Rosenthal: Source: Scherzer deal with #Nationals is seven years, $210M with half deferred. He will receive $15M per year for 14 years.

That's what was reported on MLB network and mlbtraderumors. Apparently it includes a $50 million signing bonus.

This may help explain it.

FanGraph's Dave Cameron crunched some numbers, and estimates that Scherzer's new contract—$210 million spread out over 14 years—is about as valuable as a seven-year, $170 million contract when adjusted for inflation.

10 years/$252M (2001-10)............Agreed 12/01 to defer $45M in salary to 2011-20 at 3% interest. Acquired by NY Yankees in trade from Texas 2/04 (waived no-trade clause).

10 years/$275M (2008-17)...............Texas obligated to fund $9M as part of deferred compensation provision in previous contract (to be paid with interest in $3M increments in 2008, 2009 and 2010).

Both of these are from the article you posted. It appears the later overrides the former, but in either case we are not done paying A-Rod, unless I'm misreading this.

This was posted by Evan Grant in August of 2013.

If Major League Baseball were to ban Alex Rodriguez for life because of performance-enhancing drugs, the New York Yankees would get off the hook for nearly $100 million in future salary.

The Rangers would not be so lucky.

The Rangers still owe Rodriguez approximately $40 million (which will grow to nearly $50 million by the time it is paid) in deferred money from his original contract. That money was later deferred even further to accommodate his trade to New York. It is to be paid from 2016-2025.

No wonder I'm confused. :noidea:

Not shockingly I believe EG is more confused. I say again ... Feliz' slider that buckled his knees was the last 'payment' TEX made to Rodriguez.
