I can never see the Flyers eating salary ever. Not if it counts against the cap. That just seems so anti-Flyers.

while some of that is true, macdonald was far from terrible. he might be a little overpaid next season, but as the cap goes up, that number will look fine. streit is worth his production. vinny is a bad one. and hartnell's isn't great, but it's 4.75 mil for your top line LW. that's not bad.

a lot of those comparisons are ridiculous too. mcdonagh might be the best contract in the entire NHL. keith signed his contract in 2010 when the salary cap was only 59 million, apples to oranges. pacioretty has 2 seasons over 20 goals, hartnell has 7 (I'd still take pac, but it's not outrageous). not sure why he included ladd at all, he had a whopping 2 more points than hartnell this season.

next round:
Vancouver is trying to get rid of edler because he's overpaid. I don't need to get in to how overrated Jaybo is again (for those who've been posting with me the past 5+ years, I've spelled it out for you). I love backes and would love marchand if he were a flyer, but backes had 5 more points than hartnell and marchand had 1 more.

last round:
Yandle was signed in 2011 when he had only 1 season above 40 points and the cap was 64 mil. since he's been great. the yotes risked money on him, and it panned out. kronwall would be nice. neal, aside from 2011-12 when he had 40 goals, puts up very similar numbers to hartnell year in and year out. Eriksson has 1 30 goal season (2008) and his best season was 2010 when he had 73 points.

would I take some of those goes over what the flyers have? absolutely. would I take all of them? hell no. but you have to look a little further at the numbers and when things happened before passing judgment on a contract. instead of just looking at the names. the grass is not always greener. I'm sure I could write the polar opposite of this article using names like ville leino and scott gomez to show that these guys have 'great' contracts.

The Flyers have $22 mil invested next season in a 5-man D group that STILL LACKS A #1 GUY. I'd argue it also lacks a #2 guy as well. That's sad. I really don't need to go any deeper than that into the problems this team faces. Hopefully Hextall can get them out from under the dead weight.

I think Mark Streit is a number two guy but that's it

the cap hit of the dmen will go down as morin/hagg/ghost start coming up. you can't have a cheap and sound defense without having homegrown dmen on your back line. that's the only way to get them cheaply. outside of the 3 mentioned, the only other high pick the flyers have used on a dman recently was for sbisa who was traded for pronger.

Agreed. Absolutely. But, good GM's know this and put themselves in a position to have talent continuously flowing through the pipeline. Too many 1st round picks were traded away, and poor drafting in rounds 2-7 was the final nail in the prospect coffin. We can debate the merits of the Pronger trade, but in the end that was not the sole reason the cupboards were bare. Fortunately, Holmgren's trades were for the most part successful, and he signed a few quality undrafted players to help offset the lack of prospects. In the end, though, his horrible cap management is a hole Hextall will now have to dig his way out of.

I was considering Streit as well, but at his age his skills are declining and he might be a borderline #2 for another year if we're lucky.

I agree that there's a hole to dig out of, I just don't think it's a real deep one. I was much more concerned with how the contracts/cupboard looked a few years ago. I think we're on the upswing of this.

People also have to realize that the Flyers aren't going to be able to fix this defense right away, it's a transition period, they'll get better when the young guys come up very soon - so it'll be about tinkering for right now

Any chance of Vinny for Ryan straight up? Would the major hang up being Vinny not wanting to go to Ottawa?

From hockeybuzz, so take it for what it's worth:

On Niskanen and Boyle

Niskanen is getting lots of interest and the Penguins are unsure as to what to do with him. He has the most value to probably the Pens themselves because he is their best moving D-man apart from Kris Letang. There are rumors out there that the Penguins could trade for Dan Boyle's rights from the Islanders. But the Pens may also still decide that they cannot let Niskanen get away.

On Philadelphia and Phaneuf...

There are just rumblings at his point but there is little doubt the Flyers are interested whenever a tough and offensive minded D-man is on the market and Phaneuf is among the toughest. The Leafs want Brayden Schenn and a high end pick I am told. Not sure the Flyers head that way but it's out there.

Mike Richards to NJ, NYI, Chicago or Anaheim?

It is starting to sound more and more like Mike Richards, fresh off the Stanley Cup victory, could be bought out or traded. The Blackhawks are among the teams most interested I am told if a trade were to occur. The Devils, Islanders and Ducks would have interest if he is bought out and Richie were to become a free agent.

Flyers looking at Brian Boyle

Brian Boyle, who is now a pending UFA after a very impressive playoff run, is in the run to be a Flyer UFA. I was also told the Wild and Canucks are interested.

On Benoit Pouliot...

He was one of the best forwards for the Rangers, despite taking too many offensive zone penalties.. Pouliot will get himself quite the raise. The Rangers want him back, but the Flyers, Wild, Vancouver, and Flames will all be courting the big guy as well...
