This just gets the Kings out of paying Richards $14 million and change the next ten years which were the terms of the buy-out. Obviously, Richards, in theory, is a free man but he'll be tending to the legal ramifications of this for awhile.

Guess we're getting an MDZ QO and a White re-signing tomorrow. At least I hope so.

I love when Bill sets people straight.

The Flyers are infinitely better shape now than they were even 6 months ago against the cap. It's still not sitting pretty, but for a team that is expected to compete, and be a cap ceiling team, I'd say they're in very good shape.

Yeah I was reading article on PHT about how they're in "cap hell" and it just set me off

The Flyers have done nothing but good this offseason and people say they're in "cap hell" - they acted shocked that they're in that situation after signing MDZ but that was where they were going to be at any way - and it makes it sound as if the Flyers were in cup contention for this upcoming season and now that they're in "cap hell" they're not

It's not about one year, it's about the future - the Flyers will have more contracts off the books after the next year or two - they've already done more work than anyone possibly could - the team is in a much better situation now

Holtby signs for $6.1. Not a bad deal but it makes you appreciate Mason at $4.1

For this season it is a good deal but if Steve Mason plays well again, he will be a legitimate comparable to Holtby

Since the Flyers have retained money on Vinny, Luke Schenn and Grossmann for this season they cannot retain any money on a traded player. This will mean that they either have to take money back and or a lower return.
Depending on the player that is being moved out I may not have a problem with that. Just saying.

Quick mockup using CapFriendly

Schenn (5.5) - Giroux (8.275) - Eriksson (6)
Simmonds (3.975) - Couturier (4.333) - Voracek (8.25)
Raffl (2.35) - Laughton (.863) - Read (3.625)
Bellemare (.712) - Cousins (.925) - (VandeVelde) (.712)
McDonald (.637)

MacDonald (5) - Gostisbehere (.925)
Del Zotto (3.875) - Gudas (2.25)
Schultz (2.25) - Streit (5.25)
Alt (.75)

Mason (4.1)
Neuvirth (1.625)

-Bolded are the players I resigned.
-Alt is interchangeable and really just represents any 7th defenseman. Same with McDonald, just wanted to include an extra forward for the sake of making sure we are cap compliant for a complete roster.
-Assumed the cap would be 74 million
-Bought out Umberger
-Gudas is a wild card, I could be under or overvaluing him. No clue what to expect there.
-I've had Schenn pegged at 5.5 for a while, in part because I'd rather overestimate and be happy with anything cheaper.
-I also tried to overestimate Eriksson, but I could actually see him getting 6 or even more elsewhere. I wouldn't go higher than 5.75 for Eriksson unless it was 3 years or shorter.
-Technically this team is actually 2.034 million over the cap because Lecavalier's retained 2.25 million isn't off the cap until he officially retires

-Also, I do expect Provorov to make the team. Just not sure who Hextall gets rid of and I prefer to play it safe in mock lineups.

This looks good but still a team way to small to go up against the Caps and Ducks of the world.

From Bill Meltzer:

Although Vincent Lecavalier has already publicly admitted that he is retiring this season, there is still a minor salary cap implication for the Flyers and Kings based on when he files for retirement. If he retires in June, both teams carry no hit. If he waits until July, he is owed a $500,000 check (the final annual installment of his signing bonus from the deal he signed with the Flyers in 2013) on July 1. For example, if he officially retires on July 2, both the Kings and Flyers would carry a $250,000 cap hit.
