if they move hartnell, it's gotta be a hockey move IMO. i'm not in love with him, even less so his contract, but he's a bankable 20-25 goals and a staple on the top PP unit. you can't move him for draft picks just to clear space IMO. i think they're missing a top 6 forward already, if you move hartnell, your missing two top 6 forwards.

If we move Hartnell we are moving a team leader also.

truth.

hartnell, more broadly LW, is a position that can be improved, but moving him just to move the contract is unwise IMO. if you move it to clear cap space so you can sign a new LW in free agency, chances are, you're going to end up with a contract that's equally as bad, maybe worse. the length and NTC suck, but 4.75 really isn't gunna kill you. a FA LW will probably do more damage against the cap than hartnell will.

However, you have to think about the future as well - he's still got a lot of years left on his contract and he might end up declining even more - remember, with Hexy on board, this is a long term thing, so he might considering moving him

He's too inconsistent of a player, sure he gives you stretches of really good hockey but it's not going to be worth it if he's coming up small when you need him the most - for someone making that type of money he needs to have more than 20 goals, end of story

There are rumors that the Pens will be shopping James Neal, who has 4 years left on his contract at $5 mil per. He's 26 years old. How would you feel if the Flyers acquired a talented ass-wipe like Neal, especially considering the need for a LW, if the price was right?

No...fuck him...we will grow tired very quickly of his terrible penalties. Flyers don't need anymore targets on their team that will draw a quicky whistle. He is a product of playing with 2 of the top 5 forwards in the league imo.

I'd rather trade for a guy like Patrick Marleau(even though he's older) - he's a guy that would fit well on Claude Giroux's line - my only concern is what it would take to get him - he only has a couple of years left on his deal because he had signed a three year deal, so the Flyers wouldn't be inheriting a long term deal

oo man would I hate if the flyers acquired James Neal. but from a hockey stand point, I do think that would improve the team. he'd be a great fit with Giroux and voracek I think.

marleau would be a good move too I think. and I think fitting his salary would be more painful than what they'd actually have to give up to get him. I think the sharks are looking to make a big splash this summer and since they didn't fire the GM or coach, to me, that means thornton or marleau WILL be moved.

Don't forget how much you hated Talbot until he joined our team and had a breakout season.

I like Patrick Marleau better because he's a smarter player and he uses his speed to his advantage

I'm curious what the Sharks would want back in return? Maybe Brayden Schenn as a starter?

I believe I read somewhere that the Sharks were planning to move Thornton and keep Marleau.

At least that's what I'd do if I were the Sharks - I like Patrick Marleau more than Joe Thornton at this point - they can just give Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski bigger opportunities up the middle with Joe leaving - it'd be much harder to replace Patrick Marleau

Although I read that maybe they'd keep Joe because Patrick Marleau may be more willing to waive than Joe

Funny, I just read the opposite. I don't think most sports writers have any idea what they're talking about.

"Marleau might balk more than Thornton. He’s been in San Jose half his life and is married to a girl from there. Thornton might be more willing to waive the no-trade clause."

I just get the vibe that Patrick Marleau would want to move more because if the Sharks decide they want to move him, he probably doesn't want the pressure of having to not waive the NTC and then play on a team that doesn't really want him anymore

from my perspective Marleau is the more attractive player to both the Sharks and Flyers. Both teams are pretty deep up the middle and a little thin on the wings.

no idea who would be more willing to waive the NTC at this point though. who knows, maybe neither of them are?

marleau sure would like nice with G and Voracek though, no doubt. (I have no desire to get Thornton)

It'd be interesting if the Sharks tried to move them and neither waive, they'd be in a pickle then because they would still have to do something that would be considered a "big move"

Who would you move in order to get a deal done? Maybe Scott Hartnell is an attractive piece for the Sharks, who knows

I went on capgeek and I did a Scott Hartnell and Brayden Schenn for Patrick Marleau trade(not sure if that would happen in real life though) and this is how I made the roster

Patrick Marleau - Claude Giroux - Jake Voracek
Jason Akeson - Mikhail Grabovski(4.5) - Wayne Simmonds
Michael Raffl - Sean Couturier - Matt Read
Zac Rinaldo - Scott Laughton - Daniel Winnik(1.8)
Jay Rosehill

Mark Streit - Andrew MacDonald
Zach Redmond(1) - Luke Schenn
Braydon Coburn - Nicklas Grossmann
Oliver Lauridsen

Steve Mason
Al Montoya(1)

Flyers would be left with $1,257,500 in cap space

Also the Flyers took 15% of Scott Hartnell's salary in that Patrick Marleau deal

Where did Vinny go in this scenario? Or did I miss something previously?

@JohnBorukCSN: Sat Down today with #Flyers GM Ron Hextall, who said his #1 off-season priority is re-signing RFA center Brayden Schenn. #flyerstalk

Good. I would trade him in the right circumstance, but I know if he was traded he'd put up 70 points next year and make us look silly.
