@JohnBorukCSN: Sat Down today with #Flyers GM Ron Hextall, who said his #1 off-season priority is re-signing RFA center Brayden Schenn. #flyerstalk

Good. I would trade him in the right circumstance, but I know if he was traded he'd put up 70 points next year and make us look silly.

that is a relief for me. I know a lot of people want to move him. solid move hexy, imo.

Smart move even though he hasn't put up the great offensive numbers he still plays an all around game and is very young. He contributes in other areas when he's not contributing offensively.

I just wish he was better on the wing. but, give him 2 legitimate wingers on the 2nd line and see what happens.

Laughton - B. Schenn - Simmonds

Yes, Laughton has said in interviews he could move to W if needed and that he's played there before. That would be an ultra hardworking & high pressure line.

that would be. they'd grind the crap out of people.

lacks a little creativity though, but I wouldn't mind seeing what that line could do

It'd be much better defensively as well, that line with Simmer and Schenner with whoever was on that line, was bad defensively(Vinny for most of the time it seemed) - they need a better defensive presence on that line

Creativity doesn't really count for much when a forward group can just wear down a defensive group by hard fore checking and board work then go hard to the net all night long. That line would drive a goalie crazy the way those 3 drive.

I did also think Laughton would slot in great there for some added defensive presence, I have Raffl as the full time 3rd line winger with Coots and Read (that'd be 3 very dangerous lines btw). Schenn & Simmer suffered from Vinny disease all year. Schenn in particular since Vinny refused to play his defensive role as a winger and resorted back to positioning himself like a center, this made Schenn look out of positioning since he was attempting to cover for Vinny instead of be in his assigned coverage. I just hope we can off load Vinny this off season because I don't think we need him at all moving forward.

Yeah this is a good point - the lines don't have to be creative to have success - just need to wear down the other teams and drive the net

Schenn was supposed to have good (not great, but good) passing skills coming out of junior.

I was on capgeek and it had the upper limit at 71.1, so if they buy Vinny out and put Chris Pronger on LTIR they'd have about 14-14.5 million in cap space

If we buy out Vinny will any of it count against the cap?

Thanks. It will definitely benefit us to do it this year instead of waiting.

It think it would be better to trade him and agree to retain some of his salary - we would get back an asset plus not be on the hook for 100% of his remaining salary/cap hit. The buyout is just spreading the cap hit over a longer term.

for this reason, I don't think they'll buy him out. plus I think there's teams that would take him if the flyers eat some salary.

Agreed. How many will he be willing to actually go to, though...?

I agree with this 100% I wish we could've moved him at the deadline last year for a pick but had no takers. If worse comes to worse and we decide to buy him out it should be before the penalty jumps after next year.

They better be sure that there is a team willing to take him, we could eat some salary and get an asset, but it depends on the asset - is the asset we get worth taking on whatever the salary is going to be?
