NFL Draft Insider News & Notes: 5.0

- It looks as though the 2013 NFL Draft will receive a much needed boost of talent at the running back position. Several sources have confided both Giovani Bernard of North Carolina and Eddie Lacy of Alabama will enter the draft. Bernard grades as the top back on our draft board but sources say there are some medical issues from his past that Bernard must hurdle.

- Word in the draft community is offensive tackle D.J. Fluker of Alabama will also enter the draft.

Woohoo!!!!!

This is developing into an intriguing RB class.

17. Cincinnati Bengals
Record: 7-6
Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia
Ogletree is raw, but he has freakish athleticism and plenty of upside. He comes with some character baggage, but the Bengals have shown a willingness to overlook character concerns and an affinity for SEC prospects. They're getting good play from LB Vontaze Burfict, but can they trust him to remain focused? Ogletree also could add depth if Rey Maualuga has trouble staying on the field, and there are no great fits at Cincinnati's other positions of need (SS, RB, WR, RT).

18. Minnesota Vikings
Record: 7-6
Sylvester Williams, DT, North Carolina
Williams is the best player available here by a long shot. He has good speed and range, power at the point of attack, quick hands and solid instincts. The Vikings also could go with massive Georgia DT Johnathan Jenkins to play alongside the aging Kevin Williams, but Jenkins was not as consistently dominant this season and doesn't present nearly as much value.

19. Dallas Cowboys
Record: 7-6
Kenny Vaccaro, S, Texas
Vaccaro has good movement skills, showing balance and the ability to turn his hips and run with receivers. His instincts and ball skills would help solidify the Dallas secondary. Jenkins is also a possibility here, too, with the Cowboys needing to solidify their defensive interior.

20. St. Louis Rams (From 7-6 WAS)
Record: 6-6-1
Keenan Allen *, WR, California
Allen doesn't have elite top-end speed, but he has good size and athleticism and his ball skills improved this season. He has the potential to turn into the downfield playmaker Bradford needs on the outside.

21. Pittsburgh Steelers
Record: 7-6
Johnathan Jenkins*, DT, Georgia
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is frustrated by his team's inability to get to the quarterback this season, and the team could opt for a pass-rusher such as Lemonier or BYU's Ezekiel Ansah. However, Jenkins is a good fit as the successor to Casey Hampton in the middle of Pittsburgh's 3-4 defense. Jenkins has the size to occupy blockers and stuff the run and occasionally provide interior pressure on the quarterback.

22. Seattle Seahawks
Record: 8-5
Justin Hunter*, WR, Tennessee
Hunter's inconsistent ball skills are a concern and he needs to get stronger and more physical in his routes, but you simply can't coach his combination of size and athleticism. He could provide a go-to option for Seahawks QB Russell Wilson. Seattle also has a need at outside linebacker and would find a good fit in Ogletree if he were available. Finally, Hunter's teammate Cordarrelle Patterson might also be in the mix here should the former juco transfer leave the Vols after one season.

23. Chicago Bears
Record: 8-5
Sheldon Richardson, DT, Missouri
Yes, left offensive tackle is Chicago's biggest need, but with four OTs off the board at this point the Bears cannot afford to reach after missing on the likes of Chris Williams and Gabe Carimi in recent years. Chicago DT Henry Melton has been terrific this season, but teams can never have enough disruptive defensive linemen and Richardson fits the bill with his quickness, speed ability to penetrate and power as a bull-rusher.

24. Indianapolis Colts
Record: 9-4
Ezekiel Ansah*, DE, BYU
The Colts have a lot of needs along the front seven in their new 3-4 scheme. Ansah is raw, but he made huge strides in 2012 and showed impressive versatility for a player with limited experience. He also has a rare combination of size and speed. While Ansah is a project, the potential reward if he reaches his potential could be worth the risk.

25. New York Giants
Record: 8-5
Johnthan Banks, CB, Mississippi State
The Giants have been successful under general manager Jerry Reese going with the best available athlete on the board, but in this case they find one of the top players available at a priority need area. Banks is not elite in man-to-man coverage, but he has good length and is solid in press coverage, shows instincts in zone, supports the run and is a ball hawk with 16 career interceptions.

26. Baltimore Ravens
Record: 9-4
Corey Lemonier*, DE/OLB,
AuburnThe Ravens would continue a youth movement on defense with this pick. Lemonier might not come off the board this high, but he's an underrated prospect who played hard all season long on a bad defense. He's versatile and tough, has explosive upfield burst, closes quickly and shows some pop at the point of attack.

27. Green Bay Packers
Record: 9-4
Jonathan Cooper*, G, North Carolina
Guard might not be a top need for the Packers, but Cooper's combination of quickness, balance, power and good feet make him a perfect fit in the Packers' zone-stretch scheme. He is the best blocker in space in the class and a top-15 talent who would bring good value at this point.

28. Denver Broncos
Record: 10-3
Kawann Short, DT, Purdue
Defensive tackle is a top need for the Broncos, and while Short has been inconsistent at times during his career he moves well for a 6-foot-3, 325-pounder and has shown the ability to disrupt offenses from the interior (14.5 tackles for loss and six sacks in 2012).

29 San Francisco 49ers
Record: 9-3-1
Shariff Floyd, DT, Florida
Tennessee G Dallas Thomas would be a perfect fit because of his versatility and agility, but the 49ers might not invest a fourth first-round pick along the line to go with Joe Staley, Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis. However, Floyd's versatility to play inside or kick outside to end makes him a great fit on the other side of the ball. He can anchor against the run, chases plays all over the field and had a monster 2012 season.

30. New England Patriots
Record: 10-3
Tavon Austin*, WR, West Virginia
The Patriots might not want to spend a first-round pick on a slot receiver, but Austin's playmaking skills as a receiver and return man (and even out of the backfield) will make him a tempting option in this area of the draft. The Patriots' other need areas include defensive tackle, perimeter receiver, guard and defensive back.

31. Atlanta Falcons
Record: 11-2
Zach Ertz*, TE, Stanford
Atlanta needs an eventual successor to Tony Gonzalez, and while Ertz isn't the same kind of elite talent he does have plenty to offer. He has good overall hands and is strong in traffic, is a crisp route runner and has been highly productive throughout his career.

32. Houston Texans
Record: 11-2
Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre DameThe
Texans are looking for another pass-catcher who can take pressure off WR Andre Johnson and need an upgrade at tight end. Eifert is not an elite athlete, but he has the size to create mismatches and separation and also the best ball skills of any tight end in college football. Houston also could opt for USC WR Robert Woods, or a safety such as Florida's Matt Elam or LSU's Eric Reid.

Nickel Package: Five after the first round
December, 12, 2012 10:39AM ET
By Todd McShay

If you're scratching your head and wondering where all the quarterbacks have gone, well, they're not going in the first round. In our first mock draft for 2013, only one -- West Virginia's Geno Smith -- went in the first round. Compare that to 2012, when QBs went at No. 1 (Andrew Luck), No. 2 (Robert Griffin III) and No. 8 (Ryan Tannehill).

But if you must see multiple QBs drafted, you may need to wait a day. Your patience will be rewarded with our next five available.

USC QB Matt Barkley (6-foot-1 ⅞, 228 pounds; Grade 88)
There's a strong chance Barkley's still a first-round pick (he was No. 1 in our first top 32 of the year), but I think he should be in a West Coast offense. He has too many limitations with his arm strength, deep accuracy and athleticism for a team to feel good about drafting him in the top 10. He's not a fit for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills or the New York Jets, especially considering that current Jets QB Mark Sanchez has a similar skill set and pedigree. Where does he fit? Maybe a team moves back into Round 1 for him.

Tennessee OT/OG Dallas Thomas (6-foot-5 ⅛, 297 pounds; Grade 88)
Thomas is an underrated player. He might drop out of the first round, but some team will get a quality starter. He fits well in a zone-stretch scheme and is versatile. Ideally, I think he's suited to play OG but was a full-time starter at LOT prior to this season. He only moved to OG because the Vols needed to get the best five offensive linemen on the field. Thomas can at least serve as a backup in a pinch.

Florida State DE Cornellius "Tank" Carradine (6-foot-4 ½, 255 pounds; Grade 87)
Carradine tore his ACL against Florida on Nov. 24. That torn ACL will likely cause Carradine to slip into Round 2. He was working his way into a potential top-20 pick after taking over the starting defensive end job opposite Bjoern Werner early in the season when Brandon Jenkins suffered his own season-ending injury.

NC State QB Mike Glennon (6-foot-7 ¼, 225 pounds; Grade 87)
As you can see by his height, Glennon is big. He's also a strong-armed QB with great fundamentals. Glennon's stock is on the rise thanks to a very good senior season. Glennon has limited mobility, but is a high-character guy with impressive football intelligence. The question about Glennon: Does he have the "It" factor? Teams such as the Chiefs and the Bills could target Glennon in Round 2 if they're unable to land their QB in the first round.

USC WR Robert Woods (6-foot-1, 190 pounds; Grade 86)
Woods hasn't been as consistent this season as he was last season. He lacks elite size and speed, but he's still a highly productive wide receiver with good instincts and savvy. Also, he makes some very difficult catches look easy. Woods is more quick than fast and he has the ability to create after the catch. In the NFL, he could play on the perimeter and in the slot.

Finally, there are others who could sneak into this group as we do more film evaluation and scouting of underclassmen who may yet declare for the 2013 draft. We're still waiting to do a full film evaluation on Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley. But from what I've seen on tape so far, there's a strong possibility for Mosley to become a first-round pick if he chooses to declare. The same holds true for UCLA outside linebacker Anthony Barr and Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson.

Josh Kendall:

Dr. Jeff Guy: "Marcus (Lattimore) was blessed that a lot of really critical things that could have happened to his knee didn’t."

Marcus Lattimore will take what Dr. Guy calls "a medical trip through the (NFL) Combine."

Marcus Lattimore expects to return to playing in "12 to 15 months" "It may be before then," he said.

Dr. Guy clarifies that Lattimore "tore" three of the four ligaments in his right knee. Only one of those (ACL) had to be completely redone

What is Zach Etrz doing mocked AHEAD of Tyler Eifert? I know it's only one spot, but I don't see how anyone could possibly think Ertz is a better prospect than Eifert.

And Shariff Floyd over Eifert would piss me off.

Haven't heard anything official, but Jackson Jeffcoat should return to school (which isn't news to most; just sayin'.)

So does everyone here understand the "bang for yer buck" concept when it comes to the draft? For example: It's better bang for yer buck to get a guy at 10 than to get him at 9. (duh). And I think it's better bang for yer buck (to go back to 2001 for example) when the Jets took a good player like Kareem McKenzie in the 3rd round than when the Niners took Andre Carter at 7th overall, even though Carter was probably the more valuable commodity for a team (at least at the beginning of their respective careers). It's like the Jets traded a $5 baseball card (a 3rd round pick) for a $10 baseball card (McKenzie) whereas the Niners traded a $10 card and got a $10 card back. Just making sure everyone knows what I mean by bang for yer buck. Sometimes people don't quite get that (the regulars usually do).

With all that said, here's a WAY too early mention of a few players whom I like a lot in terms of bang (value) for yer buck (where I think they're gonna go at this point).

Tyler Bray. Could develop into an Eli Manning clone one day. Risky pick, but isn't expected to go extremely high.

Tank Carradine. Niners could use another pass-rusher IMO.
Tyler Eifert. Big dude w/ athleticism & great ball skills. Can block too. Best TE in the draft IMO. Better than Dwaaaaaaaayne Allen last year (and he was my favourite then).
Justin Hunter / Keenan Allen. Been my favourite WRs all year. Don't see why they shouldn't both go in the top 15.
I think I read Jordan Poyer could destroy at the combine, so his B4YB will probably drop. But for now he looks like a good one.
Sean Porter.
Eric Reid. Good SS prospect. Could be top-tier.

John Hankins if he goes anywhere outside the top 15. Dude's a beast.
Cornelius Washington as a 3-4 DE. Think he could be a starting quality player there eventually.

I don't think Poyer will destroy the combine, but he'll do well. He's one of the guys I'd love late in the first. Since Damontre Moore is out of reach, a guy like Anthony Barr is really intriguing as well, but he is extremely raw. Now he's a guy that will destroy the combine.

DeAndre Hopkins is he declares as well could be great in the 2nd round. Aaron Dobson as well.

I'd love to trade up for Patterson it would be icing on the cake if Alex Smith had enough value to be a sweetener in the trade up.

I used to want a trade up, but now I think a trade DOWN might actually be a better option. Hope they get a future 1st somehow. 2013 isn't a very strong draft.

Wish list:

Tyler Bray, Cornelius Washington (3-4 DE depth) a pass-rush speciallist & a NT prospect.

No more 5th-round-and-later DB, QB or WR garbage picks!
