Hello?

Do you actually think I would watch this without seeing your rating first?

:D
Apologies brother! Been a little behind the ball lately. I'll give it a proper review sometime soon. But long story short, lots of potential but silly. The creature was awesome, the acting was average, cinematography was good, the climax was ridiculous in a bad way. If you're desperate for new material then its a worthwhile watch, but don't expect to be blown away.

Hope those tidbits help! :thumb:

Good flick. I think I'm going to give this one a shot tomorrow:

I was very pleased with the movie. If you're a fan of low budget B movie horror flicks, you'll enjoy. And when I say low budget, I think wikipedia said it had a budget of $3,500.

Some cheesy one liners, and to my great surprise, they would acknowledge stupid plot points you'll find in other horror movies and explained them away quickly (with horribly bad explanations).

The Monster (2016)

As I stated to RJ already, this movie had great potential but didn't materialize well enough. There was nothing really creative or ground-breaking with this movie. The horror & creature aspects were very generic. But the creature was very well done. The makeup/cgi department made a very freaky looking antagonist. Acting was solid. It has some decent jump scares and a nice dark setting. The tension builds pretty nicely as they keep the creature out of site for most of the movie which adds to the suspense because you aren't quite sure wtf the monster is. But once the ambulance arrives the movie unravels. The writing just goes straight downhill from there. I'm sure we could find some warranted reasoning for the character's decision making, but it really made the movie forgettable for me. And the climax was just downright silly. It was a disappointment, but overall its not half bad. If you're desperate for new material then its a worthwhile watch, but don't expect to be blown away.

Great potential but falls off a cliff... 6/10

Shadow People (2013)

This is one of those films that either works for you, or straight up doesn't. No middle ground. Due to the low budget the director had to come up with some unique ways of capturing suspense using lighting, camera angles, shadows & color variations. IMO he achieved his goal. Not to mention how clean & nicely composed everything ended up being is spectacular. The story wasn't particularly strong by any means, though it exploited common enough fears of things that are half-seen and move in the dark of night which anyone can relate to. IDK if any of you have had any experiences with it, but the placebo effect is undoubtedly real, though whether it's killed anyone is questionable. If anyone is interested, I've got some stories. Having been around people who have experienced it makes this movie all the more frightening for myself. But back to the movie... The acting was solid as well. This could have easily been a big Hollywood blockbuster movie if it was sold to the right hands, but there's something about the low-budget indie feel of this movie that makes it work better. You can really tell it was made by people that have a great eye & feel for film. I know this opinion wont be shared by many, but I recommend this movie. It's genuinely creepy and leaves a good impression.

Genuine creepy factor with great cinematography... 8/10

The Devil's Dolls (2016)

Been waiting for this movie ever since watching Padraig Reynolds' Rites of Spring. This movie didn't quite give the exciting and well developed story the way his debut feature gives, but it keeps with a familiar creepy cult-like motif. The writing took a little while to get the plot off the ground, and the suspense was slow. The horror vibe sort of comes & goes throughout. The atmosphere was good, but the direction & writing doesn't quite deliver what you hope for. Sort of a bummer, but the gore fans will definitely appreciate this movie as it is filled with crimson blood-filled scenes. The blood splatter and brutality were great. The score & sound effects kept with the dark & sinister atmosphere. The cgi & makeup artistry weren't anything to write home about. Overall it was a bit disappointing, but the movie delivers an intriguing story & ample gore. Something I'm sure many of you will appreciate.

Think twice about picking up trinket dolls in the future... 6/10

Fear, Inc. (2016)

I didn't have high expectations going into the movie, as I mostly don't with horror comedies. But to my surprise I have to admit it was actually really good and refreshing. Very different from most modern Horror movies. This film was The Game ('97 with Michael Douglas, remember that thriller?) meets Houses October Built (probably a bad reference since I didn't like that movie at all, so maybe April Fool's Day). You have a thrill seeker looking for scares, and a crazy scare company willing to provide the horror experience. What surprised me the most was how this movie creates a real horror film out of a horror comedy. Confusing, I know. But its hard to explain. Basically you have what appears to be a plain horror film, but with great comedy relief injected, and still ends up being a horror film. Too difficult to explain so you'll just have to experience it yourself! :thumb: If you are a horror fan and watch a lot of movies, then you'll definitely get a kick out of all of the movie references. Good acting, cinematography, gore, progression, score, etc. The plot is full of twists which adds to the entertainment. However I think it would have been better with one less twist. Got a little fatigued with it and felt like a cop-out ending. Still an enjoyable film! Definitely recommend it.

You get what you pay for... 8/10

Always Watching: A Marble Hornets Story (2015)

Disappointed with this movie, but what can you really expect from these "found footage" films anymore. They are sort of the norm for horror films with small budgets. The plot of this movie caught my attention when it was being compared to the fiction-turned-lore supernatural character Slender Man. Definitely had the look and feel of everything you would expect from that crowd-sourced urban legend, so I was on board! This movie had the potential, but sadly it ended up being a first-person filmed knockoff of Sinister where basically all they changed were the characters and the antagonist. I could have gotten past that if they would have gotten rid of all the camera glitching nonsense. That essentially ruined the suspense for me. There were a few times where they didn't do the glitching and I thought it looked a lot better. The movie isn't horrible, and the acting is pretty good. So it isn't a waste of time to watch. Just lower your expectations to the "cheap thrills" category and increase your alcohol consumption...

Hoped for more, but cheap thrills is what I got... 6/10

The Eyes of My Mother (2016)

Sweet Jesus & Holy Shit that was twisted. This movie will shake you down to your core and leave you feeling quite disturbed. So be warned if you decide to give this a go, it's not for the faint of heart as this movie is in every sense of the word, horrifying. As Vulture E-news aptly states, this movie "claws into your subconscious and lingers there." Very true statement. Brought forward by the directorial debut of Nicholas Pesce in collaboration with Tandem Pictures. The choice of black and white for the film was marvelous. It dulls the gore without lessening the impact of the violence and makes it easier to digest for the squeamish, but in no way detracts from the horror on the screen. The acting was superb, and the cinematography was outstanding. This sort of twisted horror may not be everyone's cup of tea, which it certainly isn't mine because I think it takes a pretty f'd up viewpoint to love these types of movies, but any horror fan can appreciate the cinematic beauty that this film presents. From the start you immediately get hurled into the traumatic life of a young girl and you get to watch as she transcends into madness as she grows up. I have always been a fan of the psychological elements that these movies present, however often times these movies go a little too far into the darkness. If this sort of movie sounds like your cup of tea then I'd definitely recommend it. For those that aren't, stay away from this one.

Truly haunting... 7.5/10

The Importance of Having a Good Title: Was gonna watch this a couple times, but couldn't shake the thought that it was a documentary about a high school basketball team.

I didn't want to watch the trailer, since i want to be surprised by the movie itself. and was also wondering if i watched it, if i should watch the trailer for guardians of the galaxy vol. 2 afterwards. fuck does that look like it's going to be another awesomely fun movie.

I did watch Ghostwatch (1992) this evening. It'll seem ho hum today, but very interesting to see this was done almost 25 years ago. They incorporate a live bit from a news station doing one of the bits that Ghosthunters (or whatever) would do for a live show. On top of that, the story seems to be (definitely is) what the conjuring two used for their movie. After the fact watching it might not do much for you on a scare level, but seeing the genesis of these movies, it's a must watch for me from an appreciation level.

Siren (2016)

Remember that crazy bat girl from V/H/S? Well, here's that character's creature-feature film based on that short film. David Bruckner (original writer) agreed to sell the rights to it. This movie even got Hannah Fierman (original actress) to tag along. Never heard of the director Greg Bishop. After loving the original short I had some lofty expectations for this movie, sadly it didn't meet them. A combination of the absence of both the gut-wrenching gore & 1st person filming from the original really lost the 'edge' for this movie. And the plot was severely lacking. Made it a very flat experience. Aside from the intro-scene, there was zero scare-factor and very little suspense. It was such a shame that the sense of danger from such a phenomenal creature was non-existent. For whatever reason they concentrated too much on the bachelor party like they wanted us to care about them, but you don't end up caring at all. Average acting & very little character building doesn't give us much hope for any of their survival. They should have relegated those characters to fodder and let the creature take center stage. Decent cinematics, but the lackluster plot killed it for me. Not to mention a plethora of plot-holes that didn't make sense. Really a pity considering how great the creature was. Wouldn't recommend it.

Director really squandered this one... 4/10
