Jets offered 3/24...not sure of the G$, but their last offer was reportedly 12/6/6...he said guarantee the 12 and let's go 1 yr apparently which I would do that if I were NYJ.

Interesting. Yes I think if I was him I would have passed there too. That's a really goofy looking contract. Basically locking him into a crappy deal if he somehow took his play up to better than average.

But is he on that level? Lets put it this way. of the QB's to start most of last year, the ones with lower QB ratings were Bradford, Winston, Foles, and Peyton. Bradford is younger, finished the season better than him, and I think got overpaid by a team that can afford to anyways. Winston is a rookie with a big upside. Foles is not considered a starting level QB anymore. Peyton retired.

He seems more to me to be in-between the stopgap maybe starter (4-7 mil) and the long term hopeful starter that more than 1 team would be interested in having (15+). He just doesn't hit the things you want out of a franchise starter. Which is why no NFL teams felt he was worth 15 million plus.

3900 yards, 31 TD, 15 INT last year. That's more than a stop-gap IMO. 11th in passing TDs, 15th in passing yards, but only 27th in yards/att, 5th most in INT, 24th in passer rating, 29th in completion percentage. He's probably about 20th among starting QBs overall.

Well if he is about the 20th ranked QB then honestly $16 million is what he should cost. The top-20 QB's in the league all make $16 million or more. So I can understand why he is seeking such a contract.

12/6/6 never made sense to me either...what it really seems to indicate is that the Jets are really looking for a long term QB and want Fitz as the stopgap which does make sense...fwiw...I'm not sure Fitz can play any better than LY.

1 yr sample though...agree it is more, age makes him stopgap imo.

I think what the rest of the teams that passed on Fitz saw was a career yr from a 33 y/o QB. They didn't want to risk being tied long term to him...Cousins was a 1 yr sample also, but a lot younger and WAS truly was up against the wall and tag just happen to be what it was.

I think Washington did the right thing. Cousins showed a lot of promise but like you said one year wonder always comes to mind. So having the Tag was a great way to see him for another year before committing to him long-term.

And yeah I agree I don't blame the Jets for not wanting to give him a big contract. One great yea doesn't negate that most of his career he has been a below average QB. Throw in his age and I can definitely understand their hesitation. Again though because of the price of QB's right now if they do view him as a 20th or higher QB then $15 million a year is honestly a bit below the average money wise. I wouldn't pay him that much but that is the going rate even for a below average QB.

WAS...agreed. Given that Gruden is the go forward man in charge and the season they had under Cousin made this a fairly easy decision. $20m is steep, but they made a wise move to see another year before ponying up to a Osweiler type contract for him.

Again, we're talking about younger QBs...yeah the stats support Fitz's request of $15m, but the age doesn't when you consider his history. Moreso when you played one of the worst games of the year when it mattered the most...if he goes 20 for 30 and 3TDs and they lost...Jets probably have no issue paying him the $15m for this yr at least, but you have to thread lightly when a vet QB with a so so history as a starter plays his worst game when a win likely gets you in the playoffs.

In a nutshell, I see both sides, Fitz's and the Jets...I would tend to side with the Jets on this one.

I side with the Jets as well. NO reason to hurt this year and future years cap wise on a mediocre at best QB who most likely goes back towards his career average this next year and beyond. You are stuck with some pretty mediocre QB play at that point for some decent money.

I too am with the Jets on this one. It's clear that their offer is easily the highest he's received. Fitz has few real options. He just had a career year (from a journeyman career), so the jets know that he won't sit out the season, as his value would only go down. His real choices are simple. He can be a starter in NY for 8M/year or he can be a backup somewhere else for 4-6M/year or he can sit at home make nothing. That sounds like an easy choice, but I don't have a Harvard degree...

Exactly. Some say his weapons inflated his numbers, some say that after 11 years in the NFL that's the absolute high point of his play (20ish), that is most likely his ceiling, and I tend to think probably true. If he can build on that, then re-visit it during the year or next year.

As long as you're good with you're wasting prime years of many of your key players, including your #1 WR. The Jets are constructed to win now if they have a solid QB in place. Hackenburg will take some time IMO, needing at least a 1 year bridge if not 2.

Man the Jets are stupid. They are throwing away the year. 1 year for 12 million doesn't hurt them at all and gives them a starting quality QB that knows the system and has familiarity with their WRs. They add an old RB and then get rid of their veteran QB? Shit makes no sense.

Why does this dude think he is worth 15 million plus? He has never made the playoffs in his career he is a journey men QB. Also don't give me the Bradford BS he had leverage cause he was a hot commodity. If the Eagles didn't give him money someone else would have such as the Broncos maybe or the Texans or even the 49ers. No one else wants this bum. if he really wants to play he should be take what they are offering because he is lucky he is even getting 8 million or more!

Fitz has been a decent qb everywhere he's gone. If he wasn't in the AFC East as a bill he'd have more than 6 wins on average. Give him playmakers and you will get results. He made the titans competitive in games once he took over in 2013, not getting blown out other than by Denver the last 9 games.

That said he's a bit overrated but he's better than Bradford. Still, jets are gonna have a bad season with that schedule or they will get off to a losing start before going on a midseason run only to falter late.

Yup. If they don't sign him, they pretty much throw this season out the window, which seems pretty stupid because with Fitz they got a chance to compete this year, without him no chance and like you said they are built to win now.
