Isn't the origin of the name an homage to their first head coach who was an Indian?

For that matter, Cleveland should change the name of the baseball team, Chicago should change the name of the hockey team, Kansas City should change the name of the football team...

Fucking stupid.
The names of those teams (Chiefs, Indians, Blackhawks) is not a derogatory term towards their race.

Would it be ok if a professional team called themselves "spooks"

Not sure if he was paying homage considering he was known as a huge racist who didn't sign a black man to play for the Redskins until 1962.

On an issue like this, public opinion is just a distraction. The reason the Redskins should change their name has nothing to do with what anyone thinks now, in the second decade of the 21st century. The reason the Redskins should change their name is the same reason they should have changed it decades ago -- the same reason they never should have picked the name in the first place. The word "Redskin" has a well-established history as a racist epithet, and such words have no business being sung and chanted in support of a professional sports team. Simple as that, and it has nothing to do with tradition or fan pride or whether anyone's still offended by the name today. If the word has ever been used to ridicule or belittle human beings on the grounds of race, what's the good reason to keep it alive in a glorifying context? Changing it would harm literally no one. It would be an act with no motive but basic human courtesy. - Dan Graziano, ESPN

Why is he an idiot?

Because he cited the truth that the original was indeed a huge racist?

Thanks for wasting my time with a letter sent to a Senator by a lacky under Dannyboy. Boy that one was "spinned" well. Why not have ALL this Nations Indian Tribes just vote on this and give lil' danny their beliefs on the subject. Hell, IF the Indian Tribes voted in favor of Washington keeping the name I would sit at the table and eat my crow. Just a matter of time till the "re-branding" happens.

Why didn't the owner send the letter to Reid himself?

To busy throwing his cash at the Tribal Indian Nations and trying to buy them off...AGAIN? GL wif dat!

Nah...ol' "wet dreams" always errs on the side of history, it's in his pathetic gene pool, not his fault the best part of him rolled down the bedpost "many moons ago".

shut up you new age pansy. Go to a mall and yell redskin and see if anyone jumps your ass. No one will care. Most Indians don't even care.Ask black people about racism and they are all on the same page and you cant ever yell the N word anywhere without pain.

not changing it will hurt no one as well. The good reason to keep it alive is because that's obviously what they've always wanted in the first place-Redskins fans- and that's why it doesn't change. Go hug a tree you 60s reject j/k

Lol, time to come up with some new insults, Wallace. It wasn't racist from the outset and still isn't. The main people offended are white liberals who want everyone to be offended by everything. The name should remain and will for the foreseeable future.

"At the high school level 28 teams in 18 states have dropped the "Redskins" name during the past 25 years as a result of a combination of state legal action, protests from Native American groups, or voluntarily"

Several college teams that formerly used the name have changed voluntarily:

The University of Utah Redskins became Utah Utes in 1972.
The Miami University (of Ohio) Redskins became the RedHawks in 1997.
The Southern Nazarene University Redskins became the Crimson Storm in 1998.

So why are all these schools changing their names if the word isn't seen as a racist epitaph?

purely because of political correctness, false fears and believing hyped propaganda. for all those you mention there are plenty who have countered and won. The other schools just had mentally weak admins and such. College is a liberal haven and they believe all the stupid shit the 60s dope heads who are now teachers put forth. Offending one person doesn't mean things should change for the 100%. Its just a stupid none issue for dumb people to dwell on. How in the fuck does a indian carrying an axe or what ever offend a race of people ? it doesn't.

how dare you name a team after our tribe ? how dare you let our name be known years after the tribe doesn't exist anymore ? LOL sheesh they should be thankful someone remembers them. If it wasn't for sports teams most early American history about Indians and the knowledge they were around would die faster.

the blackhawks weren't even named after a tribe. They were named after a military unit.

chief wahoo isn't offensive, what a stupid thought, its a efing cartoon picture. The world is a bunch of stupid people in the computer age offended by lightweight crap....don't type in caps, its rude, its just like yelling ...sure,maybe if youre really efing dumb it is...its just larger letters on a screen you little girl LOL

When Wahoo was created a lot of cartoons were pretty offensive and wouldn't fly today.

It's not the picture or the name of a tribe.... it's a word that was used just like the word n***er is used today.

You're equating Redskin with ****er? GTFO with that nonsense. It's not even in the same realm.
