NFL players want month dedicated to activism

A group of four players sent the NFL a memo in August requesting league support and asking for a month to be dedicated to social activism, not long after commissioner Roger Goodell reportedly had talked to several players regarding their game-day activist efforts.

According to Yahoo! Sports, defensive end Michael Bennett of the Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins and receiver Torrey Smith, and former Arizona Cardinals wideout Anquan Boldin co-authored a 2,740-word document intended to push the NFL to honor activism in an effort "similarly to what the league already implements for breast cancer awareness, honoring military, etc."

The letter was obtained by Yahoo! Sports and originally published on Wednesday night.

"We would like November to serve as a month of Unity for individual teams to engage and impact the community in their market," the memo states.

The letter was prepared shortly after Goodell spoke with several players who had protested on game day before the regular season kicked off, the Yahoo! report stated, citing two sources.

"For us, support means: bear all or part of the weight of; hold up; give assistance to, especially financially; enable to function or act. We need support, collaboration and partnerships to achieve our goal of strengthening the community," the letter stated.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy issued a statement on Goodell's visit to Philadelphia, where he and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie accepted an invitation by Jenkins to take a closer look at the city's justice system.

"Commissioner Goodell has been talking with players for some time about social justice issues and how to recognize the progress and the important work of our players in their communities across the country," McCarthy said in the statement.

As soon as they start dedicating their free time, support and money to the same cause

Kapernick does, and he lost his livelihood for it

Guys like Bennett are just race baiting lowlives that will do nothing but try to bait others into action

NFL regular season football is only 4 months. We already have one month for breast cancer (not sure why it's not just cancer in general, but whatever), one month for the honoring the men and women serving in the military, and now these guys want a month for "social activism" ? Ok, that's pretty broad. Social activism could be lots of things. So that leaves one month open. Better submit your cause du jour to the league fast before someone steals that last month. How about a Peta month where players have to catch a football made of hemp and stadiums can't serve burgers or dogs? Any takers?

They want to spend a month talking about the myths BLM throws out there? It's hard enough to watch these games due to so many teams trying to tank and the lack of practice. Now we'll have to deal with political nonsense a ton of us, especially those who have looked into it disagree with?

Maybe they should stop worrying about the police and the big bad white man and concentrate on why so many black communities are shooting galleries. Chicago just hit 500 homicides before the end of September....again. Maybe tackle the problem of unwed teenage mothers in their communities and how that leads to poverty? Maybe work on the drop out rate which is incredibly high in their communities and leads to poverty?

Maybe, just maybe if these communities take some responsibilities for themselves and end the cycle of violence things may change. As long as their is out of control gun violence in an area businesses will not go there. Less businesses, the high the cost of goods and services for the community. As long as the schools are full of kids and parents that don't care, on top of being violent, only the worst teachers, who have been transferred from other areas because they suck at what they do will be willing to work there.

NYC was transformed from being the butt of every joke about crime in the 70's by cracking down on crime aggressively. When areas got safer, businesses opened and flourished, jobs were more readily available and tourism made a huge comeback. 2240 homicides in a year became 350 in a little over 20 years. On top of that NYS was one of the few states that had a reduction in the state prison population in that time.

The violence has to end before things get better, the rest is just political nonsense so SJW's can feel they are activists, so certain white people can feel morally superior and so the NAACP can keep the donations rolling in.

Susan G Komen is the reason why we have a month for breast cancer. I am sure SGK didn't just ask for a month and boom, they got it. I bet there was a lot of money poured into advertisements and charities events to make that awareness month possible.

I think if these players really want it, they should pay for the advertisements, the charity events, and whatever goes along with it.

IDK about that DDD.

I think one of the Bennett brothers was arrested at the Mayweather-Connor fight in Vegas...apparently a case of mistaken identity. I'm sure he feels some kind of way about the racial climate of today and how it relates to black males.

That said...imo if you want to be an activists, be an activists...if you want to be a pro ball player, and you can...do that....you can't be both.

Kaep's biggest problem imo was he couldn't make his point for a game or two and go back to being a football player 100%...it really seem to me his mind and effort were not into the game to carry his stance all season. Now, all of a sudden it's all behind you and you want to play football again?

Eh...IDK that either.

The Las Vegas story that Bennett fabricated does not jibe with the video evidence available.

With the right focus it's not a bad idea. But if it's going to be a "let's all bang on the cops" thing, they should leave the league out of it.

One thing that is complicated is not everyone agrees with certain social activist issues. So will the league force players to capitulate? I mean if the league (for example) decided to dedicate a month to supporting transgender issues by wearing a color or a patch or whatever, what if there are players vehemently opposed due to their cultural backgrounds or religious affiliations and whatnot? No matter what the social issue is there is bound to be division among the players. I think its safer and smarter for the league to just stay out of it and do what they do best, play football. Why the need to bring politics, race, gender, religion, etc into a sporting event? Let players decide what they want to stand behind on their own time. On game day they are NFL employees and their only job should be to play the game they are paid to play.

Was he arrested and released or not I guess is the question?

IMO it's beyond silly to fabricate such a story...if true, he should be doing a 180 in the other direction of ANY kind of activists work.

He was detained for 10+- minutes and released. His version of the events are at odds with the facts in a big way.

There is a thread on here somewhere with some good info.......... brb
