Not trying to instigate but I don't believe Toyota has ever won a Camel Trophy, but it looks like Ford has one in the trophy case. In truth Land Rover which was a Ford product for many years looks to have dominated this race for many years. A lot of them while under the F-O-R-D ownership.

There is no denying that the Tacoma is a little interesting truck that has its place, but I wouldn't say it is the most capable off roader. That has got to go to the Jeep. Anyways the OP seems to be making a good choice for his needs even though a Ford F150 would be the best choice. lol

Camel Trophy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

BTW: Best small truck ever made was the Jeep J10 or Honcho. Now that would make for a sweet little truck today.

I am by no means saying the Tacoma is the be all to end all offroad vehicles. But off the showroom floor nothing beats it that America makes.
And yeah the old jeep trucks are pretty cool but they have the same problem jeeps have today. They twist off axles like crazy. Sure you can upgrade to chromo axles for around 2000 bucks but then you start twisting off drive shafts. And if I really wanted a capable offroad truck I would try and track down a Hilux which is made by Toyota but isn't available in the US.
And the land rover was originally made in the united kingdom and is now made unfortunately in india.
And the OP asked about Toyotas and if they would tow a camper.
I'm not trying to dog US made trucks. I'm relaying all I've learned over twenty years of serious off roading.
Toyota trucks are tough mofos compared to American trucks, and I say this from experience, not from any misguided loyalty to a certain brand.

You can eat a dick mister and relax. Its really not that serious to any of us here including me. I have no doubt you speak from some real world opinion, but no need to be defensive over some banter. We are a good group and aren't hard to get a long with unless you're being antagonistic prick.

I am far from the King of SportsHoopla. As a matter of fact I'm probably not even worthy of being one of his serfs. Now if you ever are fortunate enough to meet the King or the Duke or his Dudeness of SportsHoopla I would hope you are more respectful or you might find yourself kissing his ass.

Good day to you Sir. :suds:

You're the one who started the shit...I just responded in kind.
And if I do happen to meet "The King Of SportsHoopla" I seriously doubt he would get all bent like you did.

My 06 chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab 4x4 has 150k miles on it..the only thing I have had done to it was recently which was replacing the front wheel bearings.. I have been towing a 6500lb travel trailer since 09and before that my smaller travel trailer & 3 different utility trailers carrying all kinds of stuff.. other then oil changes, tires, and brakes no problems with it and it gets around 22mpg on the highway not towing about 15 when towing my big travel trailer and around 18 mpg round town not towing.. can't complain this is my 3rd one..

I'm not saying an American truck cant tow. As a matter of fact if I was looking for a serious tow vehicle I would have to go with the F250 or if I was really looking for a tow master I would go with the F350.
But for all around reliability and basic towing needs I would go with a Tundra. If I wanted something that got reasonable gas mileage and could tow a reasonable amount of weight I would take a Tacoma or 4Runner.

Glad to hear it. Not looking to start shit myself. Just passing on everything I've learned from years of truck abuse. And the vehicles chosen by the vast majority of truck abusers like myself.

When did we go offroad? Oh well .....

If a truck can take the abuse of offroad use it will surely stand up to basic towing.
And I also stated that I towed the biggest pop up you can buy with my Taco.

Actually if I decide in a year or two to get another truck I am going to seriously consider the Dodge ram 2500 Cummings turbo diesal 4x4 my brother has an 2011 and the independent rear end is a huge plus for towing my travel trailer.. hardly even know it's there.. and it got almost 17 mpg going about 70 mph when we went down south a few months back..like I said earlier he has a 99 or 00 tacoma extra cab 5 speed 4x4 with 165k+ miles on it that we hunt out of.. it's been a damn good truck had been driven mostly off road for the last 5 years out so

Sorry to hear about that.

Your lucky though we get pounded with snow and you have nice winters, it evens out.

I was surprised to see my breath though tonight. It got chilly.

I understand that. My wife gets these hot flashes and it is insane. Just laying in bed next to her she can go from a normal temp to like 400 degrees in like 10 seconds.

Toyota has been making offroad vehicles that kick the shit out of ford and chevy for a long time.
I've used all three in punishing conditions. In fact I've had my toyota on the front page of off road mags and calendars. This ain't my first rodeo when it comes to abusing trucks.
How about you look around in the off road community and see what people drive.I promise you it ain't chevy or ford. Unless of course you count off roading as putting 60 in. mudders on a truck and driving through mud puddles that is.
Ford and chevy aint worth shit when it comes to real world use. And there aint a more real world then the Camel off road series....go ahead and see if you can find a ford or chevy that even bothers entering the toughest off road race in the world.
Try again.....

I hate to inform you, but off roading is not real world use for 90% of the trucks ever manufactured. That is a hobby/sport that uses specialized parts for it. Also the reason most people use the Tacoma for off roading is due to the SOLID REAR AXLE and clearance from the factory. Only two reasons.

Ford, Chevy, and Dodge have been making real world work trucks for decades that outlast anything Toyota has. In fact until the Tundra came out Toyota didn't even have a full size truck that someone could use for work. I.E. construction, towing, and so on. Never going to see a Tacoma or Land Cruiser towing a 30ft trailer hauling 2 cars, towing a backhoe, or better yet hauling steel beams. Would you like to know why? Toyota has NO VEHICLE that is a 3/4 or 1 ton truck to tow such heavy objects.

If you consider off roading the only real world use then that is the problem. I will gladly tie a chain between the axles of your Tacoma and my Ram and have a pulling contest. Guarantee your rear axle gets pulled out from under your truck. My truck can haul more in the bed and tow more behind it than your midsize truck can.

My thoughts exactly. According to him every farmer, rancher, and construcyion worker are using the wrong trucks. They need to be using Tacomas. Wait they can't. The Tacoma does not haul enough or tow enough to be used in those every day real world situations.

He said he wanted a Tacoma. And if you had read my post on towing you'd know that I would pick an F250 or an F350. In diesel preferably. But I wouldnt really want one as a daily driver.
