Sure, the Niners have the best RB in the NFL and above average WRs and a great TE, but an elite Oline? LOL. That tells me you don't know all that much about the Niners. Outside of Williams at LT, the Niner Oline is very average.

For comparison look at the Oline in Philly. Hurts has an elite Oline in Philly. No one would confuse the Niners Oline with theirs. Not to mention he has 2 1,000yd WRs and a 1,000yd RB and a good TE. Yet no one is saying "well, Hurts isn't a franchise QB yet imo b/c I need to see him over a longer period of time without all those weapons."

Good call! I thought their offensive line was really good, but most post season ranking systems have them ranked around 13-15 in the league.

I'm really not being critical of Purdy, but just stating the obvious...he hasn't been around that long and has had an AMAZING team surrounding him. Again, he's been excellent, but I'm not sure I'm ready to label him a "franchise QB" quite yet. He looks like he may be one, but I think I would need a bit more longevity before I would crown him one. GREAT problem for the 49ers to have. They don't have to pay him for a few more years, and he is putting up amazing numbers. We'll see if he can keep it up! Vegas certainly thinks he will as they are the favorites to win it next year from what I've seen.

Hurts took plenty of criticism, and still does, but he did have 4 full seasons under his belt, 3 full seasons as a starter, before he got his payday. So I'm not sure that is a good comparison to Purdy who just finished his first full season as a starter.

You should never label a QB a "franchise guy" In the first two seasons. Purdy has the potential but he's not there yet. Our Oline is awful though, he's pressured or hit way more than not.

I can't think of many QBs who was labeled the "franchise guy" after just 2 years in the league.

That was my point to @Xeliou66 when he called him a franchise QB. Again, Purdy has all the makings of possibly being one, but there is a good chance he isn't even starting in 2-3 seasons. Things change so quickly in the NFL. I think most QB's need 4-5 seasons before truly being evaluated....I imagine that's why their first extension often happens around that time.

You don't actually need to be great to be the franchise QB. You just need to fit well in the system and perform. Two seasons as starter isn't three seasons as starter like Hurts, but I think it's long enough for Purdy to show that he's the guy for the Niners. And I don't think the Niners will find a better talent anyway unless Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, or Stroud were to become available or they were in a position to draft Williams, and the chances of getting any of those guys are zero.

Maybe we're talking about different things. It's too soon to label a QB as elite after two years, but I do think that teams make decisions sooner than that on whether someone is their franchise QB. I think it's necessary to make those kind of calls in two years or less because they need to plan long term. For example, Trevor Lawrence is definitely the Jaguars' franchise QB, and he was labeled that way from the beginning. I think that the Niners definitely see Purdy as their franchise QB. If not, they would've hung onto Trey Lance.

But Purdy hasn't even really been a starter for two seasons. He started 5 games in 2022. Hurts has had three complete seasons to Purdy's one.

The Niners won't find an available player better than Purdy, but I think it is mostly due to the price tag. We'll know more in the next few years whether he is worth the bag, but right now, if Purdy was at the end of his rookie contract, do you think they would sign him to top 5 QB money? If I were a Niners fan, I'd be nervous in that scenario. Good thing Purdy has at least two full seasons to prove his worth.

1.5 seasons, but there were also deep playoff runs. I think the Niners feel that they have enough data. Maybe we're talking about different things. It's too soon to label a QB as elite after one and half or two years, whatever you want to call it, but I do think that teams make decisions sooner than two years on whether someone is their franchise QB. Yea, I think we are talking about two different things. Saying he's going to be our QB and planning that makes sense internally for clubs so they can move forward.

Becoming the "franchise guy" aka Mahomes, Lamar, Allen, takes a few seasons.

I don't think they really view him as a franchise QB, because they don't have to. They don't have anything really invested in him. If you take a guy at the #1 pick, you have to label him a franchise QB. I don't think they need to do that with Brock yet. Again, Shanahan has taken 3 QB's to the SB so far in the past 8 seasons, so I'm sure there are more than a few in the 49ers camp that feel he can do it with a 4th if Brock starts to falter.

IMO, the 49ers will call him their franchise QB for PR reasons, but we'll see how much they mean it at the end of next season. They can offer him an extension at the end of the 2024 season. We'll know how they feel about him then. I hope they do keep him. He seems like a good guy and has really played well especially being "Mr. Irrelevant".

I think the "franchise QB" tag is really only given if they spend lot's of draft capital getting the player. Even then it is title only. I think Bryce Young has that tag because the team wants to generate excitement due to the high draft pick (and the trade to get him). I'm sure there are more than a few in the franchise that may believe he is not. He still has time to prove it.

I like a 3-4 seasons measuring stick personally (although it seems a lot of teams use the 4-5 season measurement). Often you'll know when the team starts talking about an extension, which for the better QB's starts happening at the end of their 3rd-4th season.

Ride it out. He has done incredibly well to start his career. Very few complaints outside of lacking armstrength. Has some Tua "I am throwing to a spot and oh well" type shit going on, but that seems to be a Shanahan/McDaniel thing so it's hard to say how much is him just forcing the issue and how much is anticipation.
He did a decent job in the Super Bowl and off to a positive start to his career. 2023 was his first year as a full time starter. The arm strength is an issue with him. His inability to throw the football down-the-field got exposed big time. I do not watch many 49ers game, but I do get the appeal. The biggest thing he can do now is build up that arm strength. Tom Brady didn't have a quality arm in the beginning and relied very much on "small ball", running the football, and an elite defense. They should give him at least another season. Progression is key.

Mahomes threw a TD pass to end the Super Bowl. If he had tripped, fumbled the ball, and the 49ers had recovered it then the 49ers would be Super Bowl champions and Purdy would be Super Bowl MVP.

Purdy got the team to overtime in the Superbowl. Can't do much better than that without winning it all.

Is anyone on here saying that the 49ers should get rid of Purdy or find another starter? Is anyone even really being critical?

The question is, how long should the 49ers wait to sign him to an extension.

It's down to Purdy and his agent to press the issue. If Purdy's agent says publicly that he's advising his client to participate in preseason but play only 6 games in 2024 then there's pressure on the NFL and the 49ers to do something, (without Purdy appearing to be the bad guy). Right now the NFL prohibits the 49ers from doing anything, and they're both happy to do nothing if Purdy will accept it.

That wouldn't be my viewpoint. Purdy wasn't the reason why the 49ers lost the Super Bowl. Special teams was the reason. We would have had a much different result, if the ball didn't hit the 49ers player on the punt and Moody "missing" the extra point. Overall, it was a pretty evenly matched game. But it is pretty clear that Purdy's arm strength calls into question, his longevity.

If the Niners won, CMC would probably be MVP…

Again, no diss to Purdy, he deserves a lot of praise for a fantastic season, but before they drop a big contract on his lap, they have to figure out if it is the QB or if it is the system that makes QB's so successful in SF. This is why I question whether the system is the secret sauce with Shanahan:

Any team looking to acquire Fields is putting themselves in an impossible situation. He's not going to play out the 4th year on his rookie contract.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/chicago-bears/justin-fields-72391/market-value/

Can he be traded prior to the March 1st deadline for his 5th year option, or will the Bears need to pick it up prior to trading him? If a team believes in him enough, that $22M 5th year option is still relatively cheap compared to what Cousins or Wilson will cost (and probably Baker).
