Long read re our pitching dilemma by AJM

"And Hearn has not been good. His disaster outing against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, when he allowed eight runs in 3.2 IP, jumped his ERA by almost a run (5.37 to 6.25), but Hearn took a 5.87 xERA into that start. Hearn’s xERA is now 6.17 - in the 4th percentile among MLB pitchers. His xwOBA and average exit velocity is also in the 4th percentile. His barrel rate is in the 3rd percentile. He’s also walking too many batters — Hearn is in the 25th percentile in walk rate. And he’s not missing enough bats — he’s in the 30th percentile in K rate, the 19th percentile in whiff rate, and the 23rd percentile in chase rate.

If you look at Hearn’s heat maps, his fastball and sinker are both left over the heart of the plate way too often, which results in pitches being crushed. The fastball command has not been acceptable. Maybe if he were pitching out of the bullpen, used in a multi-inning role the way Brock Burke and Matt Moore are, where he has to face hitters one time and can squeeze out more velocity with his command issues maybe not being as much of an issue, he’d be an asset.

Right now, though, Hearn isn’t a major league caliber starting pitcher."

"So the Rangers have rotation issues, and if they are in contention come July they are definitely going to have to go find at least one someone to plug into the rotation"

No, no, no, no.

The Rangers should not be making ANY moves motivated by contending in 2022.

Wow that would be a tough read if I were Hearn
Wonder what Woody honestly thinks about this article

this year was about finding out who Hearn was. him not being a starter was a possibility.
True but this was also a year for SP development especially at the upper levels.

But what happens if Perez and or Gray go down,?

We have terrible depth at AAA and may be forced to bring up Ragans but if not him would have to be Howard. To me it is a little scary. Only a little because the playoffs is not the main concern this year.

You are right in that the playoffs should not be a part of the discussion. Stick to the rebuild. See how some of these pitchers do as they move up through the system. We need to see what warshes out. LOL! Sorry. The word wash has been compromised for the rest of my life. :wash:

If Gray or MP goes down, then someone gets pressed into duty.

Or they can make a trade for a starter that figures into the plan for 23 and beyond.

Just a thought but do we need a different pitching coach at Frisco. I am amazed at how bad Leiter is doing among almost all of our starters. Jeff Andrews has been around a long time but it just doesn't seem to be working out. Guys who talked highly of him in the past are Brett Martin and Hearns.

They may do that at the break but you may lose a couple of good prospects

We have alot of mlb players in the minors coming up but where is the top of the order guy type guy who is a true difference maker a dangerous guy in the lineup. We have a ways to go and yes Leiter is getting a crash course. He wanted to start in AA so there you go

So guys like Reks, White Leody or Bubba do not look like OF starter material. Keep one as a 4th OF. Maybe another as AAA depth. Don’t need the other 2 on the roster. Maybe not 3 depending if we convert guys like Josh Smith who can be real good if we are lucky but probably not great.
Like to be optimistic but this may be the reality

This is why guys like a Seager and Semien must produce. Paid for a superstar so be it
