I've seen 3 of them. My recollections are a bit vague but in my opinion.........
*Splinter: Best of the lot. Is theoretically a zombie movie but in reality it is an alien creature feature. Folks trapped in a remote gas station get terrorized. Cool creature stuff.
*Session 9: A bunch of workers are decommissioning an old asylum (? I forget what their job was) and find a series of tapes from sessions with a multiple personality disorder. They listen to them over a series of days, things get weird, people start dying.
Typical supernatural in an old asylum stuff. I remember it being ok.
*Girl House: Girls live in rich guy's fancy mansion and make $$ stripping on the internet. Client goes crazy due to past trauma (which is shown at the start of the movie), and goes to the house for a killing spree. I remember it being ok, but I recall thinking it was fairly cookie cutter and the characters rather bland.

I could be wrong on the details but if you have to choose one, I'd go with Splinter. It has some problems but the creature(s) were pretty damn cool.

Splinter (2008)

This movie kicked ass and I would recommend it as a MUST SEE! It features really cool effects, allegedly without the need for CGI. The plot is complex, and makes us think about internal and external threats. Essentially there are 3 layers of terror going on in this movie which sounds overdone, but is simply brilliant. First off there are convicts, second there is a fungus/parasite, and last there is the creature. All wrapped up in this are 2 unfortunate honeymooners trying to have a romantic escape. The progression takes you on a fully engaged roller coaster ride all throughout the movie. The acting was perfect. I had problems with the way the creature was displayed because rather than show how truly creepy the damn "thing" was, they only showed it in short glimpses of shaky filming with loud noises. In short, the editing was crap. But don't let that ruin the movie because I thought this was a really fun and entertaining movie.

A Fungus Among Us :heh:... 8/10
Here is a Splinter review from @FaCe-LeE-uS circa 2015. High marks!

I watched Session 9 from 2002 with David Caruso, Josh Lucas, others. It is about a crew that go into clean up asbestos from an old insane asylum that is going to be renovated.

Decent flick but quite slow moving. It was definately psychological horror. Not a slasher or jump-scare type by any means.

The story was good but a bit convoluted. The acting was good but the director purposely made the characters a bit confusing which was a bit of a turn-off (might have been necessary for the story though).

Worth watching if you are into a slow moving that requires you to pay attention and think a bit. Don't watch if you want action.
Also from 2015, a brief review I did of Session 9. Apparently more psychological horror than I remember.

1. Splinter (2008)... Awesome low budget viral/neo-creature feature. I could watch that movie any time its on.

2. The Perfection (2018)... An unexpected Psychological Thriller gem! Definitely worth the watch! Great performances and good twists that make you go "WTF!?". The ending was... bizarre lol

3. Session 9 (2001)... Been a while since I've seen it, but I do recall it being pretty decent. @returnofjakedog summed it up nicely.

4. GirlHouse (2014)... Haven't seen this one but google images tells me that I have some.... uh... research to do

Watched The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015) today.

I was surprised to see no one seems to have mentioned it here. I'd heard good things about it, and I enjoyed Oz Perkin's recent movie Gretel and Hansel so thought I'd give it a shot.

A weird little tale about 2 girls who stay at their boarding school during break, and things slowly go very bad. There is also a secondary tale that eventually ties in about a girl escaping an institution and is making her way towards the same school with the help of a married couple who lost their daughter some years ago.
It has a strange structure in that there is very little exposition and limited character development (all intentionally) but they manage to piece together an interesting tale anyways.

The good:
*The creepy ambience. It does a good job of capturing the feeling of awkward lurking danger.
*Generally decent actors but the young girls were a bit inconsistent.
*The violence- there isn't much but when it does happen in a couple of scenes it was pretty damn brutal! It isn't very gory but it is nasty.

The bad:
*It took a long time to tell a very small story. This was seemingly intentional and it allowed for the positive ambience but it truthfully would probably be better as a 30 some minute short.
*Many will find it too slow, but this wasn't a negative for me.

Overall I really liked it. It reminded me of The VVitch after a fashion, though not quite as well done (and without the underlying message). I'll give it a 7 out of 10 but be prepared for a slow burn.

Apparently I'm going through the Oz Perkins' filmography so I guess I Am the Pretty Little Things That Lives in the House is up next.

This one has been sitting in my queue for ages... Mixed with a bunch of other movies that we think "looks ok but could be overly dramatic". That one always reminded me of Crimson Peak. Came out in the same year. We saw that one in theaters and were pretty disappointed. So much so that we avoided Blackcoat's Daughter. And judging by your review it does have some similarities.

Personally I think the feel and form of the film are closer to The VVITCH (but not quite as good).

Crimson Peak was more about the visuals imo as Del Toro can sometimes dominate a movie with the look. It might kinda compare in some aspects storywise but it isn't that similar.

Since Oz Perkins also directed Gretel and Hansel that is probably a better comparison. The feel and excellent audio score are similar but the story itself is quite different and the plot twists are subtle but impactful. So maybe use that as your guide?

Well, again, neither are as good as The VVitch so temper your expectations a bit. The story itself is thin, but well executed.

The tie-in storyline has Emma Roberts as the lead in it. So depending on how you feel about her it could be a positive or a negative. She has done quite a bit of horror in recent years, to both positive and negative results.

Emma Roberts... So long as she doesn't play the angsty b!tch that she usually plays then I've got no problems with her lol. I thought she was good in AHS: 1984.

Do any of you watch any horror movie YouTubers?
I have a few that I watch.

Crypt TV has very good original material along the lines of the Short of the Week website that @FaCe-LeE-uS informed me of (short of the week also has a youtube channel but they have way more content on their website). Some really good stuff!

Most others are reviews and historian type stuff. Some I watch there are Doctor Wolfula and StitchedTogetherPics, both who do comedic character reviews (kinda similar to old school horror hosts?) and Dead Meat, who does full reviews with kill counts and such.

I periodically check out a bunch of others, but those are my personal favs.

The other ones I would recommend fall more into the "So bad, its good" genre who don't focus on horror but can often delve into it. However those are BAD horror movies so I don't know if they really apply here (but Zombeavers is a beloved flick in this thread so maybe they sometimes do?)
