2019/2020 OFF SEASON THREAD

Maybe about time to fire up this thread for the off season.

In a year where everyone expected to be painful, it lived up to expectations for the most part. Still they managed to send off Ichiro, Felix and celebratory weekend for Edgar's HOF induction.

It appears there's nothing left other then to get down to business and start building a contender, but its the Mariners so maybe not.

3 games left with Oakland and looks like the Mariners will finish with 5th or 6th pick in next years draft pending what happens the next few days with the Blue Jays

Just to spark some conversation since it's been pretty dead around here lately:

- Who should the Mariners move this offseason?
- Should the Mariners trade Mitch Haniger?
- Domingo Santana?
- Mallex Smith?
- Should Daniel Vogelbach be the DH going forward, or should they try to move him and make Domingo Santana the primary DH?
- Does Dee Gordon have any trade value?
- Should the Mariners use some of their extra money to sign a free agent that could contribute in the time frame the Mariners anticipate contending?

Once again it should be a fairly interesting offseason for the Mariners, especially when it comes to the outfield. Mallex Smith had a poor season, Domingo Santana was hitting really well before getting hurt, Mitch Haniger had a poor year and the Mariners have a ton of prospects at OF.

A win last night and a BlueJays loss eliminates a chance at a top 5 pick. Mariners are pretty locked into pick 6 now unless they win the last two and Pittsburgh loses the last two. Given the As are still playing for home field in the WC game that seems unlikely

Moving Haniger makes no sense to me. I’m not selling him for pennies on the dollar at this point. I’d actually see if you could extend him if possible. Doubt he’d want to do that tho.

Gordon probably is hard to trade but if you can’t trade him then he stupid just be the utility guy. Don’t care what he’s making Long should be the guy at least to start the year.

Regarding free agency I think it would be behoove them to pounce on a free agent starter. That’s something that they don’t really have coming up in the pipeline in a 2021 competing window.

The Vogelbach/Santana question is going to be the biggest question in the offseason followed by if they do try to get a starter. If Jerry is correct that 2021 is the target goal then he kind of has to buy a starter, otherwise he is either going to have massively overspend on one like the Carlos Silva deal or deal top prospects. We all know my feeling on Jerry being in charge of trades but I guess we haven’t really seen his dealing with high priced free agents. I agree with Haniger but if somehow Jerry can deal both Vogelbach and Santana to set up pitching then Haniger can DH. Not saying he is the hitter Edgar was at all but thus far Haniger’s career is following his. Different fluke injuries but still fluke injuries.

Much like Mike Leach and his goddamn not running the ball, Jerry also has to come to realize that you cannot ever be a legit contender if your entire rotation is based off of Marco and a bunch of guys who have openers or need starts skipped. It burns out your bullpen just like Lloyd did.

Agreed on Haniger. Right now his value is quite diminished due to the injury and poor start to the season. If they want to move him, it needs to happen when he reminds the league what he's capable of. I think the 2018 version of Haniger deserves a substantial haul. Unfortunately even if he plays in 2020 like he did in 2018 we wouldn't receive the type of return that a player of his caliber deserves and it could bite us in the ass.

My biggest concern about holding on to him is that @NWinAZ pointed out a while back that apparently Haniger wasn't interested in discussing an extension.

When it comes to Vogelbach, he really struggled at the plate after the HR derby and he has hit very poorly against lefties. I don't really think we'd get much in return for him given his limitations on the base paths and defensively.

There could be a possibility we could move Dee Gordon. I'm a bit biased because I like guys like him, but the game has moved away from players like Gordon. Personally I think he'd be really useful for an NL team as a utility player/pinch runner. If the Mariners eat half of his 2020 salary or more they could get a long-shot player in return.

I'm kind of on the fence regarding signing a FA pitcher. The Mariners will have a lot of money to spend, but I worry that if the prospects/"plan" doesn't materialize, we'll once again be on the hook for a player with an exuberant contract that we need to try to move.

Well the thing about some of the trade ideas you guys have is that I am pretty sure that they have tried to move them at the trade deadline and we couldn't get a thing back in value. I am sure they tried to move Santana and Gordon and there wasn't much bite. I think there was rumors that the Yankees were interested in Santana so I am not sure how going into the offseason would create new traction.

I would personally keep Haniger and Vogelbach unless the trade possibility was something we couldn't turn down. I think Vogel got tired at the end and with the team tanking there really isn't motivation to keep up the effort. I would keep Haniger I know people think that we have a ton of depth at OF in the farm but I don't see it that way. Julio Rodriguez is a long way from making it to the league and Kelenic probably has another year before he gets here, People are fans of Fraley and Bishop but I am not convinced. So other than Kyle Lewis I don't see a solid lock for positions in the outfield. The only prospect that I see coming up next year is Evan White and possibly Logan Gilbert.

As far as pitchers having Gonzalez, Dunn, Sheffield as our 1,2,3 with Logan Gilbert possibly making his debut in the second half of the season. I would give kikuchi some slack with his father passing away at the beginning of the season and this being his first time abroad playing. I agree we should acquire a solid starter if not 1 great one than 2 solid ones would make things look great. Acquiring starting pitchers is expensive either way. You are either over paying a free agent and giving up comp picks or trading away valuable prospects to some team.

The Haniger not wanting an extension could work in the M’s favor though. His value is rock bottom and with how GM’s are now treating free agents his value on the open market isn’t exactly sky high so he has no leverage to not sign.

And they will continue to pick up..a few waiver wire guys
And..maybe a free agent pitcher

The two years Healy has been hasn't really impressed me, his glove was pretty good but I was hoping for what he did in Oakland more so than what he has done with us.

Not trying to say losing Healy makes the team terrible or anything like that but without him, to me, that means they either have to go the FA route, which I think Healy would probably be as cheap or cheaper. Or they are going to have White play 1B or have one of their numerous utility guys playing 1B. Let alone he seemed to be a clubhouse leader when he was on the roster. Not necessarily a crucial loss but a loss that I don’t get unless they have something already set it stone.
