Which film do you think deserves to win, though?
I generally don't watch movies in the theater so I'm usually a year behind on this kind of thing. I saw Black Panther and thats it so I can't actually tell you what deserves to win.

Roma is gonna win. A travesty imo. No one wants to sit through that garbage on Netflix. Sure, probably well done. But yaaaaawn.

I don't always agree with Cinefix but none of their top 10 movies made the Oscars list:

10. Upgrade
9. Hereditary
8. You Were Never Really Here
7. Free Solo
6. Isle of Dogs
5. Incredibles 2
4. Eighth Grade
3. Shoplifters
2. Paddington 2
1. If Beale Street Could Talk

The Oscars are becoming irrelevant if movie hipsters and general audiences alike don't really see the appeal.

Right, because there are so many nominations that its bound to happen.

Best Picture tries to skate the idea of art and ticket sales at the same time. Imo, the list we're left with is very unsatisfactory. Vice in particular is just inexplicable outside of lol GOP

I've only seen Black Panther, Isle of Dogs, Incredibles 2 and Upgrade.

Counterpoint: why should a movie that has bad critic marks and bad user review marks on RT be on the best movie line?

because it's all subjective. Black Panther is high in both marks, but as most agreed in this thread, not even the best super hero movie the year. some movies get a buzz around it and people tend to pile on one way or the other.

Have me down as "Roma" winning it all.

Vice has a bad critic score and a bad audience score so its only on there for political reasons as far as I can tell.

7.1 on Imdb, and has been for weeks. I get it tho: User ratings vs critics ratings. I use imdb when I'm considering whether to go to the theater, and it has served me well.

I think the main reason it's on there if for the acting performances.

i watch way too many movies, i've seen all 8 nominated for best picture. i enjoy movies, i just don't get when people bitch about selections that they haven't even seen. i'm not saying there isn't merit to it, but the recent baseball HoF vote had me thinking, people always go back to the stats to back up their claims. I'm at the point where I actually did see these people play ball and I saw these movies. You can bitch and moan about either, that's the point of a message board, but I feel like the oscars every year is just people bitching to bitch who had no intention of watching anything nominated.

Vice was well acted and entertaining(McKay will make an entertaining movie even if the material is dry, as bio pics can tend to be), if you want to talk about a shit movie to be nominated watch Phantom Thread from like a year ago. Boring as fuck, but it's supposedly Daniel Day Lewis' last movie, so it gets lots of noms.

The nominees for the 2018-2019 Oscars / 91st Academy Awards have been announced.

First, nominees for Best Picture, with links to the SportsHoopla thread for the film if there is one, and don't forget to vote in the poll before it closes a month from now, shortly before the ceremony on Sunday, February 24, 2019!

Best Picture:
* Black Panther
* BlacKkKlansman
* Bohemian Rhapsody
* The Favourite
* Green Book
* Roma
* A Star Is Born
* Vice

Again, vote in the poll before it closes a month from now, shortly before the ceremony on Sunday, February 24, 2019!
Black Panther will win best picture, book it. Not because it was the best but for 2 reasons:
1. All the affirmative action noise.
2. Because it clearly wasn't the best and voting is usually done by brain damaged liberals

I have been hearing enough buzz about BlacKKKlansman that I think it takes it.
