Big O, we don't use the word idiot here. That is how you get banned. Not sure who the old school idiot is though. ehb is young and I don't think he is an idiot.

Interesting stat on the deep ball with Alex...gonna be interesting to see if it continues to increase this year...

It will be interesting. Between experience and playing under Andy, Alex got better. Jay coached Cousins to 3 straight 4,000 yards seasons. Hopefully he can do the same with Alex.

You still have to run the ball, but as I said a little bit ago the Redskins proved the last three years you do not have to run the effectively to make play action work. What makes it work is you full the defense or some defensive players into hesitating or even better taking a step up, then they are late getting into their drops or covering at all.

Last thing I’ll say to this post. Yes, all the above is true, but my point is if your run game isn’t very effective the defense won’t respect it and hesitate or step up.

Running the ball effectively makes play action work better. I illustrated this several times last year. However you cannot ignore the fact that Redskins who have not run the ball well under Cousins were still a good play action team.

You wanna know why you need to be able to run the ball? Clock management and wearing the opposing defense down. Don't you think there were a few games last year where we could have used a clock eating offensive drive to keep the opposing offense off the field?
And ask any defensive lineman. They get burned out much quicker defending the run than rushing the passer.

Absolutely. Saints game immediately comes to mind. Redskins had a big lead late in that game They lost since their D could not stop the Saints at all late in the game and they could not generate any O when it mattered. Just one extra first down & they win that game.

I will take it a step further for Saints game. Assuming health & the players are close to what is expected if the Saints-Skins game is similar to last season, but both Guice & Payne or on the field then the Redskins win going away (regardless of who is the QB).

Correct, several of us have talked about play action but killing the clock with a lead is a big deal. Old timers remember that Joe Gibbs 80s Redskins did most of their passing in the first three quarters and then let the Diesel run the clock out.

This whole talk of a strong running game not helping play action passing is ludicrous. It just doesn't pass the smell test, irregardless of what some statistic says. Again, ask any Offensive lineman. Is it easier to pass block on a play action pass than a standard drop back passing play? They will all say it is. Which means that the QB should have both more time and a cleaner pocket. Why is this? Because the DL and LBs all freeze for a second while analyzing if pass or run. Which gives the TEs and WRs a step. How can that not help?

But it only happens if the defense respects your running game. And they only respect it if it is good.

It does sound weird but explain the success KC had with the play action if running game matters. We didn’t exactly have an effective running game during his tenure.

He succeeded without the benefit of freezing the defense. Its that simple. He pre read the defense and was good and finding the opening in the defense anyway.
This was a strength of KC that the haters always overlooked. I expect he will only get better in Minn. While our good QB now only gets older.......

I always thought that Cousins pre snap and his ability to read a defense was severely underrated aspect of his game. He put up numbers with shit weapons, zero running game, and a defense that allowed points and couldnt get off the field thus making it 1 dimensional/predictable

Its a very real possibility that he will be hoisting the lombardi trophy year one... The Skins local media/PR spin would be a lot of fun to watch if that happened.

Smith is one of the best play action QBs in the NFL. Sure he is getting older (like everyone), but it is not as if they are stuck w/ a non-factor at QB. I wanted to keep Cousins as much as anyone, but that is in the rear view mirror. Let it go already.

If the Vikings win the SB - more power to them. However it is not as if Cousins will be the only reason. They have tons of talent on that team & perhaps Cousins will compliment that nicely. It is as not as if Cousins remained that the Skins would have a big shot at doing the same. If the Vikes go far & the DC media makes a big deal out of it - who gives a shit. Why should anyone care about any media takes in this era?

Oh I definitely dont.... especially not the local DC media

More for entertainment purposes. Laugh at not with

I thought Skins were building something and last year if they werent so injured and Pryor panned out as many thought they would have flirted with 11 wins while only really needing to address the RB and Dline this past offseason to take a step further (again under the assumption that Pryor would have performed bc now you can add WR to that list)
