Unsane (2018)

Still not sure if I have digested this film properly, but against my better judgement I'll go ahead and review it. This movie had some potential. It presents some clever writing using strong psychotic doubt which I found to be the most interesting part of the movie. The principal concept was for the viewer to question the sanity of the protagonist. Seems interesting enough, but due to the randomness of the sequence of events that unfolds you sort of lose sight of that. The writing & progression sort of deteriorated the plot to the point where I lost interest. Which was a shame because once the climax came into play it seems like it developed some sort of twist, but sadly it didn't land with me. Felt like they wanted you to believe all along that it was headed towards some profound/predictable twist, but it leaves you with something more unexpected. I guess you can call that a twist of a twist? There were a lot of characters that came & went that sort of muddled the plot and blurred the focus of the film. So if you watch this be sure to keep your focus on the main character & how she interacts with everyone. There are lots of subtle clues in her mannerisms that keep you guessing, but its a very dry mystery game to play if you aren't into that sort of thing. It's slow-paced, heavy with dialogue, and doesn't present any suspense... so be forewarned! Oh and there was an oddly placed cameo by Matt Damon. It was very strange. Wasn't a fan of this movie, but again I'm not sure I gave it enough attention or digested it properly. I may have misunderstood a bunch of it.

Good plot in theory, but progression deteriorates the focus... 5/10

It was excellent.
How have you never seen I Am Legend before? That is one of my favorite Z-flicks ever.

Seems like an extreme to call it one of the favorites when it was I want to say the 3rd remake of the movie. Granted, the original(s) may have went in a different direction, with some more levity, as the book did, not that I read it. That being said, it wasn't a zombie flick, as much as a vampire flick, in a sense.

That’s why I called it one of MY favorites. Opinions are never extreme. The newer version was very well done. The plot might not have been mind blowing, but it was simple & very effective. Z-flick or vampire flick... whatever the case. It’s an infection survival thriller which are all basically the same. That’s just being nitpicky.

i guess i was focusing more on are we calling it a zombie or vampire. it's dystopian either way. in my mind, i am legend really went more to the vampire way, as they couldn't come out in the sunlight. though, i've seen many interpretations of both through the years. on the zombie side and on the humor conversation, i thought fido should have got a mention, i mean, fuck, billy connolly is in it, what more do you need?

All 3 versions of those movies were pretty damned good.

However, Charlton Heston gets the award for Best Carpet Chewer. :D:D:D

Omega Man was easily the best IMO. The book was pretty good too.

Now that I think of it, I’m not sure they ever refer to the infected as dead or not, just infected. Which sort of nullifies both right? Depends on the adaptation of the vampire lore I guess. Nevertheless I think it’s the feral & inhuman nature of the infected that “zombifies” them in my eyes. Most vampire adaptations display more civilized mannerisms. Could go either way though.

And that’s a great point on Fido. I thought someone mentioned it? Or maybe we missed it altogether!?

no great point, think i mentioned fido before. also think both popular takes on the story ended up more vampiric, mostly from not being able to be out in light.

I wrote reviews of all 3 of The Last Man on Earth/I Am Legend/Omega Man films on here over a year ago.

Just my 2 cents on it:

*The original with Vincent Price was The Last Man on Earth, and followed the book the closest but is very dated at this point. I actually liked the post-apocalyptic environment the best out of the 3. The "creatures" are vampiric instead of zombie-like and cool because they retain a lot of their humanity. Some of them know Vincent and play psychological warfare on him, but the downside is that they are very weak and apparently not so smart either.
*Omega Man has an awesome, almost hilarious performance by Charleston Heston in it as he dominates the film with his macho posturing. The ghouls are more of an albino cult set on wiping out "the old ways" and their main goal seems to be harassing a drunken Heston at every turn. Cheesy but cool.
*I Am Legend with Will Smith has the best fxs and probably also the best portrayal of a descent into insanity of the 3. While the monsters are cool and terrifying I just couldn't buy a human having such an extreme physical transformation. Still, a cool movie!
.....but.....
All 3 of these movies are flawed. At some point they should try it again with the big budget and special effects but stick with the more psychological bad guys. Make them with adrenaline strength crazies but maintaining more of a semblance of intellect. Kind of a trickier, more devious version of the 28 Days Later creatures.

Again, just my opinion but while all of the movies have some cool stuff and are worth watching, none of them do proper justice to the original book. Let's try again Hollywood!

Here are the original reviews I wrote:

I just watched 3 adaptations of the Richard Matheson novel "I Am Legend" for comparisons sake

Starting with 1963, The Last Man on Earth starring all time great Vincent Price. It suffers from an early 1950s feel even though it is '63, and Price, who has never been great at showing emotions other than shock, fear, and creepiness, comes off even more wooden than usual as he seems relatively ambivalent to his wife and daughter passing. The zombies are a combo of slow moving z's and vampires as they suck blood but stumble around. Even though they are able to talk, they are weak and stupid. The best parts are his wife whispering at the door and his old friend constantly berating him in zombie form. The narration is pretty cool. I give it a 5 to 5.5 for a good story but poor execution.

This is followed in 1971 by The Omega Man starring another all-timer in Charlton Heston. This one starts out great with Hest cruising around in a new car every day while drinking like a fish. He is going crazy seeing and hearing things which is interesting. He is constantly attacked by albino ghouls who wear cool mirrored sunglasses and spout anti-science retoric. They are not undead but more of a cult that refuses to use any technology, which is why they have trouble killing Heston (their best attempts include a catapult and burning at the stake). The movie could have been awesome if it continued in that direction but things derail when he meets a group of annoying kids with a Foxy Brown type chick leading them. That takes things down a cheesy path where Hest takes off his shirt and goes full Alpha male (I thought he was Omega?!?) I'll go a 6-6.5 for the first half.

The third was the one people are probably most familiar with, 2007's I Am Legend starring another huge star in Will Smith. While this one has the obvious advantages of learning from the previous 2 versions, and much, much better fxs, it does not always follow up. While the story itself is great (as previously noted) and the creatures and fxs are top notch. A couple of plot holes bug me and while Will Smith does a solid job, I can't help but think that this could have been an alltime great with a few tweeks. I generally like Smith but I can't help but think another actor would have been a better choice. Still, it is the best of the lot as I would give it a 7-7.5 By far the best action of the three, but the ending left some to be desired.

All three share the common theme of lone wolfs desperately trying to find a cure while fighting off mutated humanity that is trying to destroy them. The first two have the important point that the last humans become the feared monster, while the third one tries but misses on that piece. Classic story by Matheson with 3 interesting interpetations.

Perfect analysis on all 3 movies, and I agree; none of them do Matheson's book justice. :thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

i know i've see the last man on earth, but at this point, it's lost to me. i remember omega man for the albinos, which i took to be more vampiric, as they couldn't be out in light. feel like heston was running around in a convertible in that one. i feel like both of the earlier had a better story line, if only because i remember i am legend the most, where the guy pretty much was in control of everything living a boring life with what appeared to be dumb creatures until one thing went wrong. other than that, he was just living his life going to blockbuster en such, trying to contact people or find a cure.

You see this yet? I watched over the weekend, and enjoyed it. :thumb:
Watched it last night with the wifey. Not bad for a low budget film, but I have to ask... What was with the aviators? Seems like the antagonist would have been much creepier without the Top Gun look.
