My two current theories:

1) Marvin's agent put out the report to Adam Schefter 3 weeks ago, so that the agent could better gage interest from other teams for Marvin's services. This little fishing trip came up dry.... Nobody with an expected opening has an appetite for selling Marvin to an impatient fanbase. Marvin hedged his bets by pretending nothing was going on..... Now, he'll limp back to Cincinnati to keep his career going.

2) This whole trumped up story of Marvin leaving had to do with his staff. One of the underrated aspects of the original report was that the Bengals staff feels they aren' compensated appropriately given the current market for their services. Marvin might have used his considerable leverage with the franchise in a game of chicken to see if the Brown family would blink and pay his staff.

Also, don't sleep on the fact that Marvin has a deep desire to keep coaching simply to get his son's career jump-started. It's not even about wins and losses anymore, he just needs a few more years before Marcus Lewis is a true, NFL position coach and ready to climb the ladder. He's currently paying his dues as Marvin's defensive QC coach.

GASP! What could someone ever want to change about the loveable Brown regime? You mean an outside coach might expect things like hiring an actual GM? Or an actual scouting department? Maybe paying assistant coaches properly? Or for that matter actually spending money in FA to fix this bastion of mediocrity!

"er, um, duh, duh, we gotta build better."

Kinda hard to build a house when you keep giving away bricks. No serious contender does this.

The Brown family would prefer if they could simply continue cashing checks without putting in a single ounce of effort..... 6 or 7 wins are fine. As long as the league gives us a primetime game and our share of the money, they're fine.

We're idiots for watching this long.

We had better keep Marvin. I don't see us spending money on an elite established guy. We will probably get the cheapest head coach available, so at least with Marvin, we can at least win some games.

I really don't care anymore. I hate Marvin, but I love Marvin. It's a complicated relationship.

Oh Jesus... I sounded like a chick. Too bad I can't have angry sex with the old fucker.

I would stop watching, but I'm only 25 and my attention is still like a kid. Sunday's are boring and I must watch something that's entertaining.

Trade McCarron so I can semi-root for another team. Good looking out, Mike Brown.

I don't know.....It's not much of a mystery, really. Mike Brown is an asshole.

He's basically decided that the amount of money he might make on selling more tickets would be offset by the amount of money a real coach and real staff would demand. He'd rather just keep Marvin.... Win 6 or 7 games..... Collect his TV winnings at the door. Every now and then the team will make the playoffs, maybe a few years in a row when they're hitting on a few draft picks. One of these years they may accidently win a playoff game. But that's about the ceiling at this point.

I think many fans are like me.... I'm in my 40s and I've watched this shit play out for the past few decades. I hung on because there have been some signs (hopes?) that Mike would eventually step away, count his cash and do something else. We were led to believe that his offspring didn't really see the world they same way he did, and/or they hated having their kids made fun of at school. So when it was their turn, they were going to modernize and operate more like a franchise that's trying to win. Either Mikey is just never going to give it up or the apples just didn't fall far from the tree. Regardless, this is the same shit in a different package. A general unwillingness to do anything other than the bare minimum. Shame on people like me for continuing to expect a different outcome. Sure sign of foolishness.

Marvin Lewis has reached a 2 year deal with the Bengals.

You can't make this shit up.

That about does it. Final straw. I’m done with these dopes. Not spending one more moment of my life on the Cincinnati Bengals until Mike Brown is dead.

Well...there ya go. I fear that the board participation will taper off into nothingness. *sigh*

I sure did enjoy our time together. Marvin and Mike are going to outlive us all. And giggle the whole time.

Lmao. The “new staff” is taking form. They’ll replace Guenther with a cheap cronie and repackage the 2017 Bengals as the new and improved 2018 model. Hobs will hypnotize the sheep into staying in the flock.

Save yourselves the migraines.

At this point the moves by Mike Brown must be on purpose. He's got to be trying to alienate every last fan so it's no big deal when he decides to pick up and move the team out of Cincinnati.
