Bah. Total fluke play that would have been rendered moot if Giambi simply slid.

if he slid, he was out by more

You actually slow down when you prepare to slide, its why its always said sliding into first base is a bad idea

But in pure, BIG MOMENT bigness, I am not sure anything SHOULD contend with Carter. For performance, Bum is there as well, but that wasn't a "moment".

A walk off homer to win The World Series is the absolute ultimate moment to fantasize from little league on, it's happened exactly once.
That said, a squeeze play to end a WS would be my ultimate way to win a title.

I'd take Mazeroski's shot over Carter's, but both ultimately accomplished the same thing.

That's because you don't need to avoid a tag when sliding into first base. You are running into a force out regardless of what you do. If you watch the way Posada swiped and tagged Giambi? He had one shot to get him with as fast as he had to do it. a slide to the third base side of Home Plate would have made Posadas swipe tag virtually impossible.

Those A's were notoriously bad base runners.

It's happened twice.

Bill Mazeroski ring a bell?

Walk off in game 7 to give the Pirates the series over the Yankees despite being outscored 55 to 26 in the series.

To the OP, I don't completely disagree with the fact that the Red Sox lost Game 7 makes the Fisk HR overrated. I also am surprised the "Shot Heard Round the World" hasn't been mentioned (sorry if it has, I skimmed).

Basically for the same reasons that Fisk's HR is overrated, but I think even more so. Due to the fact that all baseball fans know the Red Sox had a massive drought between World Championships, everyone knows they didn't win the 1975 World Series. But, I bet at least half (if not more) of baseball fans will tell you that the Giants won the World Series after the "Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" moment. But, after all that, the Giants lost to the Yankees in the 1951 World Series anyway.

So I would pick that as the most overrated play in baseball history.

Much like the point that was made about Fisk waving his arms all crazy....

the announcer screaming over and over "the Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant, the Giants win the pennant" is what adds the legend to that home run much more than the home run itself.

Luis Gonzalez's walk off bloop single in game 7 of the 01 WS is underrated IMO.

the actual most overrated play in mlb history is the Don Denkinger call at 1b in 1985

Had no actual impact on that game.

Top 3 most iconic home run in baseball history IMO.

Only behind Ruth calling his shot and Aaron breaking Ruth's record.

No doubt, and the Ruth call is likely a myth.

Not according to Ruth. Ruth said he was being heckled by the Cubs players and fans and fell behind in the count and verbally stated that he would hit the next pitch right next to that flag pole and pointed.

Possibly true. No real way to know though. Let's say they get the call right.

Balboni comes up with bases empty, still hits the single.
Concepcion still pinch runs, they bunt him over. They got a force out at 3rd, but unlikely they can get one at 2nd, so they go to first. Wasn't a great bunt, should be able to get him no problem.
So now there are 2 outs, runner on 2nd. They intentionally walked Hal McRae after a passed ball once 1st base was open. So likely they intentionally walk him in this situation as first base is already open.
So runners on 1st and 2nd, 2 outs. Let's say Iorg still gets the base hit, but now only 1 run scores.

Tie game, runners on 1st and 3rd, 2 outs. And we'll never know what would have happened after that.

how the hell don't you slide!!!
Sliding slows you. I've always contended that the majority of plays at home should not be slides.

That may be true but it could cause a lot more doubt in an umpires mind if you crossed homeplate before being touched or not

I'll throw in Jim Edmonds diving, over the shoulder, catch. Andruw Jones would have been camped under that.
