The Cubs and Yankees likely won't get involved. Perhaps the Astros will.

Reports have come up that there was a sector of the front office that was not on board with Stanton initially and another (or perhaps the same) was pushing for a rebuild. This goes with my hypothesis that it's ownership preventing a rebuild (which was obvious), but not the front office (which was less obvious).

I wonder if this changes things. As you say, Martinez is probably plan B (C). Not terribly thrilled with that one, his power is to right-center, though I'm sure he could make the adjustment to pull it a bit more okay, but his defense is utter garbage.

No prospect attached which is nice, but also is a Boras client so were talking big money here.

I really hope Ohtani would still consider SF, but I get the sense this news doesn't help one bit. Giants really picked a bad time to be utter shit.

However, Larry Baer is on record at saying that JD Martinez is the primary alternative to Stanton. And I agree with you, cal, that is a worse option. If, as MLB Rumors projects, Martinez' contract will be in the neighborhood of 6 years and 150 million, that is not a good move on the Giants' part. He is already suspect defensively and will be 30 at the start of that contract. That makes for some really overpriced years at the end of the deal.

I really hope that the ownership sees the reality of the situation if they move on from the Stanton negotiations but I'm afraid that they will go into panic mode and build a rather mediocre team that will cripple the org for years to come. Call me an optimist.

I like Tony Watson, you've convinced me about him.
I'd be okay with Dyson if its a one or two year deal. He's got no bat whatsoever (he would probably get exposed as a full timer) and his speed offensively will be neutralized on the basepaths as a Giant. Plus, he'll be 33 at the start of the season and speed guys loss their speed quickly in their mid 30s.
Todd Frazier is going to be pricey. He's a poor hitter for average and doesn't walk much. His calling card is power. Would that translate to AT&T?

It doesn't benefit Stanton because he named four teams that don't have the flexibility to add him on a deal the Marlins are willing to accept.

It doesn't really move the needle for the Dodgers, perhaps it helps them slightly drive the price down but they still have to get the Marlins to accept a deal. Miami has shown that they'll go ahead and trade their other players to cut salary instead of Stanton.

Its like the hostage negotiations where the terrorists make demands and will kill a hostage for every hour the demands aren't met. And the way Jeter has started off his time as owner of the Marlins, Miami fans (all 10 of them) will probably start thinking Jeter is the newest Marlins' terrorist owner, in line with the guys before him.

Hopefully the one that has shown for all but one of his seasons, the 2016 season. But even so, he would be on a 1-2 year deal so nothing crippling. And even his worst season he was still a positive player. I think he's underrated.

Dyson hit .271/.342/388 for a .730 OPS versus right handers last year. His defense is one of the best in baseball as well, and speed is top end. Giants talked about improving CF defense, this is the guy for that without mortaging the future. Again probably looking at a 2-year deal. Not as worried about his decline. Yes it can happen quick but there's no signs yet.

Frazier is my least favorite option as well, and probably the most paid, but we can't go into 2018 with Sandoval at 3rd. At least Frazier is respectable, if not good, defensively at 3rd and would still be able to hit 25 bombs for the Giants I think. And he actually walked quite a lot last year. I think even if your extending to a 3-year deal he would age pretty well I think.

I think this is going to be a messy situation all around.

The Marlins are going to be mad they didn't get what they wanted for Stanton.

Stanton is either going to be mad he's stuck in Miami or decides to play for a team he doesn't want to. Or he'll be happy.

Fans across baseball are going to cast Stanton as a villain for not picking their team or holding out. Which is dumb, this dude holds all the power so what if he's making a huge life decision for himself.

I think the Giants won't hesitate to move on if their other options start to show signs of interest elsewhere.

While not getting him and moving forward with a rebuild is the medicine that will eventually make me feel better, that medicine tastes awful. I would rather stay up all night and play with my new toy (a power hitting RFer), damn the fact it will just make me sicker than I was before.
