I'm not sure he really gives a shit about winning, or why would he have signed a thirteen year contract with the Marlins? He might be content to cash massive checks wherever.

Meh...he probably is counting on the Yankees being one of the only teams who can stomach that contract in the next couple of seasons.

I'd think Harper is a more appealing player for the Yanks. Then again, he could get $40+MM/year.

We keep hearing Bronx fanboys going "it's a new era!" and so forth, but at the end of the day, they're still the Yankees. I still expect them to go out and hire the mercenaries every fall

Hal Steinbrenner might not be as knee-jerk as his father was but the culture of the franchise will take a long time to change...and Cashman is still running the FO

That I agree with. I'd expect that any team who would consider him is doing so because they want to win badly.

That said, I think whatever team gets him is going to regret it.

Yep, that's a lot of money for an injury prone future DH

He can opt out after 2020, so the might not get as much for him as they think

It's no new era. They'll spend a bunch of money if they think it makes sense.

Good point. I assume that if a team was going to give up prospects, they'd want to shore that clause up.

Wouldn't mind the Red Sox going for him if he's available. He'd look quite good in a Red Sox jersey IMO.

I'm not buying that.

What major free agent that they needed did they pass on? Once that happens a few times, I might believe this frugality nonsense.

Its happening right before your eyes....I heard all winter a couple of winters ago 'We know Max Scherzer is signing with the Yankees"

I told everyone its not happening, they never even made an offer

The old Yankees would have absolutely topped the Chris Sale offer from Boston, and they had the ammunition to do it

Go around the horn, and tell me where the big money is going to be spent?

1st - Bird
2nd - Castro
SS - Didi
3rd - Andujar/Torres
LF - gardner/Frazier
CF - Hicks/Ellsbury
RF - Judge
DH - Headley

I guarantee you they dont get involved on Darvish or Arrietta, they will go after Otani, but he doesnt cost anything, and I bet they let Tanaka walk if he opts out, without even talk of a pay increase

Its a new day, its been developing since Hal has taken over, and with the bad money mostly off the books now, and any machado or harper signing, they will be able to have plenty of flexibility under the tax by the end of 2018

If I were a betting man, they're just shedding dead weight payroll and playing rope-a-dope. When a big FA comes up that they want, they'll back up the Brinks truck like they always have.
