Giancarlo Stanton Trade Rumors: Marlins Looking to Deal Star Among Other Players

The Miami Marlins are reportedly looking to trade a number of players, including slugger Giancarlo Stanton, as they attempt to shed salary.

On Monday, Barry Jackson and Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reported Miami's new ownership—which includes New York Yankees great Derek Jeter—wants to trim the payroll to $90 million from the $140 million it would be if the roster were kept intact.

Jackson and Spencer cited sources who said the Marlins want to trade Stanton and the $25 million he is owed next season, as well as infielders Dee Gordon and Martin Prado, to facilitate the salary reduction.

As for Stanton, this report comes after Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports said the San Francisco Giants were "viewed among the preferred destinations" for the outfielder. That is notable considering Stanton holds a no-trade clause.

So new owner, but same shitty strategy? Bring an AAA team up and wonder why fans don't go to the games?

As great as he was last year that is a massive contract. I think they are looking for a "sell high" opportunity to get out of it.

I can't imagine he's sweating it that much. Guy has a $325MM contract and has full no-trade protection. He's got money falling out his ass, and Jete's isn't sending him anywhere he doesn't want to go.

Yep. And a massive contract for a guy who just this year played his first complete season.

False. Jeter added a new twist when he fired Mr Marlin. That should make all the difference in the world. . .

As I read and understood it, they're not the front runners to land him, but rather that's a preferred destination of Stanton's. There's a big difference there.

Frankly, I'd be a little surprised if the Marlins could move him without eating some of that salary. There's still 10 years and $295MM guaranteed left on that bad boy.

in all seriousness why would he want to go there? I mean I get the weather but it's not like they are much better off then the Marlins

He's only 27, I bet they don't eat any of it unless they get a hell of a lot in return.

Well, the weather isn't that great in SF, particularly compared to Miami. Gets pretty cold.

I'm not sure he really gives a shit about winning, or why would he have signed a thirteen year contract with the Marlins? He might be content to cash massive checks wherever.

Personally, I wouldn't want to live there, but SF is pretty awesome. Great food. Pretty good music scene. Short drive to wine country. It's a cool part of the country. I actually got married out there (Calistoga, CA).

Maybe he's a fag and wants to kick it in The Castro.

Who knows?

You could be right, but I'd be surprised.
  1. His contract pays him $29.5MM/year until he's 38,
  2. he gets injured a lot,
  3. teams know the Marlins are doing this to slash payroll
  4. he's got a full no-trade
Marlins don't have a lot of leverage here.

That I agree with. I'd expect that any team who would consider him is doing so because they want to win badly.

That said, I think whatever team gets him is going to regret it.
