WTF Pace

well I am pretty happy with this draft so far. Would have preferred Phillips over Goldman based on scouting reports, but sounds like Goldman is a pretty solid pick too. Love the pick of the center in round 3, he is supposedly the second best center in the draft, it's a long team need, a good pick at round 3. I'm giving Pace high marks for this draft. The rest of the lower rounds are crapshoots anyway, I think he drafted very solidly in the rounds that count.

Cali- come on you have to admit that MANY "reports" the days leading up to the draft are complete smoke screen. This has always been true to make other teams think you're going in one direction so they try and get in front of you if they want the same guy. Leaving the guy the Bears really want free to pick. That's been basic draft strategy for years. Also I believe these to be true:

1. Clickbait to generate traffic to websites for ad revenue. Jay Cutler nationally is a topic. hate/love generates interest= Let's write articles about him, it will get people to click/comment on our site. The more sensational the headline, the more interest with it. And if it bleeds it leads... so anything where the NFL whipping boy is portrayed as "losing his job" or "being fired" is easy.

2. Trading up into the 2nd pick in the draft is nearly UNHEARD OF! It was also reported by LOTS that it would take up to 3 first round picks PLUS players and possible late round picks. The rebuilding Chicago Bears were NOT going to give up that much (and nobody else did either) for a player that still has MANY question marks. If anyone thinks what they gave up for Jay in 09 was too much- giving up more then that for Mariota would have been GM suicide. (Even if Mariota becomes a decent pro- it would still set the team back YEARS by way of all the lost picks)

3. Many in the "I hate Cutler Camp" have this thing now where they believe that Cutler is the reason for everything. In AI's quote about pleading forgiveness... That's the BSC. (bat shit crazy) White was listed as a top 3 or 4 overall talent. Pace has said/shown that's what he's doing- BPA. White fit that perfectly.

4. Overall Trade talk of Jay Cutler: We've seen this for months- We have also known that the contract was going to be the biggest hurdle- that hasn't changed. We have also noted the lack of talent to replace him. If Pace didn't at least listen to offers he wouldn't be doing his job. We will never really know how aggressive Pace was in trying to trade him- we don't know if he initiated the talks or just took calls from those seeking a possibility. From what he's said publicly, I'm leaning to the "listened".

At this point- we have another confirmation- that Jay Cutler will indeed be the starting QB for the Chicago Bears in 2015. (This was simply another hope/wish/pray by the haters that wasn't true)

Everything I've written here was well thought out, true, and reasonable. Unlike the bias bullshit.
Here is an idea of what it would've cost to trade up for the second pick...

The Tennessee Titans got an insane trade offer for the No. 2 pick, and they turned it down to take Marcus Mariota - Yahoo Finance

Obviously, the Eagles were picking 20, but I'm not sure the Bears could come close to beating that package without giving up way too much.

Philly offer to Tennessee

Two first-round picks
One third-round pick
Fletcher Cox, the team's best defensive player
Brandon Boykin, nickel corner
Sam Bradford, starting quarterback
Mychal Kendricks, starting linebacker

And Pace is being scrutinized?

again, I am not criticizing Pace for not making the trade. Only pointing out that he was trying. I wonder what we were offering?

And by the way...I think Tennessee is INSANE for not making that trade with Philly, and Philly was insane to have even offered it.

Pace said yesterday he fielded calls all day about trading players and picks. I really think Tennessee would had taken Jay if he didnt have the contract

First of all, that is paces job. You got to listen to every trade offer as a GM. Especially right before/during the draft. Secondly, no Tennessee wouldnt have taken Jay cutler if they didn't accept the Eagles offer. I don't know which organization is dumber. The Eagles for offering that or the Titans for turning it down.

Back to the Thread title: WTF Pace?... has anyone noticed that this is a make-up draft for last year's Emery swing at it?
  • 2nd round- DT (this year same)
  • 4th round- RB (this year same)
  • 4th round- S (this year it was 5th round)
  • 7th round- OT (this year it was 6th round)
What does that say to you?

It means the Bears are doomed for failure for the next 100 years! Thanks Obama... (And Pace.)

Yes, Cutler will be the QB in 2015 (and most likely 2016). But acting like the new Bears management has not been trying to dump him is like Stalin pretending Hitler was his friend. Sheer denial.

Exactly. Its no secret. That said, it has to be a wonderful feeling for a starting player to know hes unwanted by the coaching staff and management. Mistakes or not, hes of a highly competitive nature, and I dont believe for a second that he doesnt work hard or cares any less about winning than anyone else on the team. Still trying to shop him on draft day? At this point, thats kind of pathetic, imo. If they dont want him, suck up the cap hit and release him. Or, stop with last ditch efforts and stand behind the players they are going forward with.

True,true......And hopefully this will increase Jay Jay the Jet plane`s competitive edge a little more.
Plus he has to think, cool, atleast they didn`t draft a qb with one of the picks.

It says nothing, other than there was some overlap at some generic positions in later crapshoot rounds. I don't think Pace went into the draft thinking "I'm gonna repeat Emery's picks just to show him who is better" or anything like that. Maybe that isn't what you are insinuating, but it sort of reads that way.

While I wasn't surprised by White or taking a DT 2nd, the pick that really (pleasantly) surprised me was Grasu. It sort neatly encapsulated Pace's drafting strategy beautifully. While interior OL was a need, I don't think anyone would have disputed that safety was a higher need. But this was - according to the experts - a crappy safety draft, and Grasu was the second rated center in the draft, and that's who Pace took. I really liked this. Using the higher value 3rd rounder like that and waiting to patch your biggest roster hole at safety into the fifth round with a more generic guy shows patience and long-term vision.

We may finally have our GM.

Good solid draft. Solid coaching staff. Bad FA moves. Cutler still here. BM gone for no return. I'm hopeful but not sold yet.

BM gone for no return.

Why do you keep saying that? The fact a trade was facilitated days before his all but guaranteed release is pretty amazing. They swapped their 5th round pick for the Bears 7th, and for cap purposes he is off the books completely. He wasnt staying. Considering the timing, what transpired couldnt have turned out any better.

I sort of think there just weren't takers on Cutler. If White is as good as they say, you will forget about Marshall pretty quick, and White is 10 years younger and a few million cheaper. Plus if that safety we drafted with the pick we got from the Jets works out, that's a bonus.

I think he did OK in FA. Not great, but not bad. I'm not really a fan of the Rolle signing, but it is what it is. In any case, I would take a good drafting GM over a FA wizard any day of the week. Good drafting solves many ills.
