U do know they will restructer his salary and change the cap amount:suds:

Sure, they can keep kicking that can down the road. They've been in cap hell before for that haven't they? Did they learn from it?

You can only defer and restructure for so long.

Eventually you are paying guys up in age like they were in their prime and because you owe so much you can't just cut them.

For a fan it is great watching a guy like Calvin Johnson in his prime not so much when you are paying him huge money when he is well into his 30's.

We’ll see what the Cowboys do but there should be plenty of avenues to realize $6-$7 million in savings this year without really wrecking the salary cap in the future.

Looking at Restructuring Tony Romo's Contract - Over the Cap

I get that to a point but at the same time they are taking a huge chance. Romo had to have major back surgery now twice if I remember right. He suffered a pretty serious injury this season that they were able to hold together but he played with a ton of pain. Do you really want to have so much dead money wrapped up in a player that could break down so easily here in the next year or two? That is the chance they are taking by making this kind of decision. By moving the money back they are possibly looking at setting the franchise back a few years if things don't work out perfect.

Now having said that it does seem in the NFL these days you have to take a chance or two if you want to be competing for Championships. Such as this past year for the Patriots they took on Revis on essentially a 1-year deal that is going to cost them $5 million in this upcoming season. I would bet the Patriots feel like that money is well spent even if it does cost them a little this season.

Most Cardinal fans knew what our cap situation was heading into the offseason. Once the Fitz situation comes to a resolution, one way or another, and after a few other contract moves, the Cardinals will have enough room to resign their guys & add some low cost free agents.

As long as teams aren't stuck in multiple perpetual contract restructure mode like the Steelers & Cowboys used to be, there is always a way for teams to manipulate the cap for flexibility in signing players.

Isn't restructuring and pushing things down the road what got Steve Mariucci and Frisco in trouble?

Can't recall Mariucci's tenure, but the real cap problems for SF began after the 1994 season. Policy used some creative salary measures but in really he just kicked the can down the road. What made things worse is the 49ers signed a number of bad players they ended up getting rid of which piled up dead money. Dead money is a killer

The cap is crap. There are so many ways of getting around it that it doesn't really matter, making this article pointless.

Friend, it is not crap. We have some tough decisions to make.

It is all going to start with Revis and McCourty. If we get Revis for 12mil - we are styling. If he wants 16? We will let him walk. We'll franchise McCourty if we can't restructure
Vereen's a tough one. How much do you pay for a RB who cannot run? He is very valuable in our system....
Goodbye Ridley
Amendola will restructure but how cheap?
Mayo will have to restructure - little guaranteed or we let him test the market.
Vince is a hard to replace player but it may be time. Siliga has the size but is not an every-down player

I don't relish the idea of losing Revis, Vereen, Mayo, and Wilfork - all at once. If we lose half of these, our cap would become more friendly. You know that does not mean we will throw money at the other 2....

Exactly what I was saying. If you restructure now you are betting he will be able to play for those years down the road or else you end up in total cap hell. He's 35 with a bad back. Is Dallas willing to gamble and kick that can down the road?

The options that don't kill them past '17 if he doesn't play that long do not end up dropping them much now. Is going down to 22m that much of a saving to risk his back going out and leaving more dead money?

Kaep will have to restructure. His contract was an obvious mistake and he will be forced to recognize that. He has value on the market still, in a QB depleted market - just not that much.....

The Cap is somewhat crap but there is still a major point to it. Decisions now affect later seasons. Just like for this upcoming season the Patriots were willing to sacrifice $5 million in dead money so they could keep Revis for this past season. So essentially they paid a $5 million a year player for this upcoming season to be nothing. Now will that decision kill them for this upcoming season? No. They have some moves they can make to get around some of that but at the same time it does limit them some. They won't be able to keep everybody from this past Championship Team. I would bet also you won't see them bring in many outside players (partly because they really don't need to and partly because they just don't have the money). So again while the Cap is crap in a way of a team can get around it just like the article says though making too many decisions that way can mean lean times ahead where all those signing bonus' have to come into play. Just look at Dallas as a great example. They organized Romo's contract so he didn't have the huge cap numbers in the seasons before this one but this upcoming one they almost have to pay him $27 million which then means they might not get to keep either All-Pro WR Bryant or All-Pro RB Murray. They can keep both but then again making that decision really limits them in the future.

You do realize they have been saying this about the Pats for more than 10 years now? And every year they seem to end up with who they want without issue and every year they seem to not end up in cap hell.

The cap is crap.

There are so many ways to handle it only a team run by idiots would fall into a cap trap.

As you can see from above, the Pats could create $32 million in cap space if they chose to do all of my bolded predictions. The Pats could create $28 million in cap space WITHOUT releasing a single player. The Pats could create over $43 million in cap space without increasing future cap hits.
