The Viper has been defanged.

At least until May.

Texas Rangers right-handed relief prospect Chase Lee, nicknamed “The Viper” because of his unique side-winding motion, isn’t expected to pitch until May after undergoing offseason surgery to repair a labrum tear in his hip.

Lee, 25, was a sixth-round pick out of Alabama in 2021. Though he is slightly built and his fastball velocity is below average, Lee’s unique motion is full of deception and he’s moved quickly through the system. He was holding Triple-A batters to a .220 average and had a 2.86 ERA through July of last season, before limping down the stretch.

After the hip did not respond, he underwent the same procedure right-hander Dane Dunning underwent after the 2022 season to repair a labrum tear. He is not currently on the field with the rest of the Rangers minor leaguers.
