Ouch!!! That is ALMOST a deal breaker but Stajan only makes the league minimum, right?

Meh, about 7 times league minimum, but that's a drop in the bucket to Melnyk. Just raise those prescription drug prices a smidge and it'll be fine.

Well the USA got beat by the Swiss 5-3. Our goaltending leaves a lot to be desired. Where's Thomas when you need him. Oh yeah I almost forgot.:D:

The one thing I've really noticed about Canada is if the Islanders could add a big time Winger, Tavares would be UNFUCKINBELIEVABLE!!.

speaking of Jagr, CZE is up 2-0 on the US about 5 minutes into the 2nd period.
these are the first of the do-or-die games.

in this period, CZE killed off a 5 on 3, then got one of their own.
Jagr's one-timer went off of Komisarek's stick and over Conklin.
huh.. turns out he scored the first one, too, but I haven't seen a highlight yet.

Bernier to start tomorrow against the Russkies...I'm going to miss the "Reimer, you suck" posts from puck.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia -- Jonathan Bernier will be in goal for Canada's quarter-final at the IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Coach Ken Hitchcock named the Kings goalie the starter for Thursday's game against Russia.

Bernier was in net for round-robin victories over Sweden and Norway after Toronto's James Reimer started the event with four straight wins.

Hitchcock says he likes Bernier's composure and the way he handles the puck -- a bigger factor in the international game because goalies are allowed to play it behind their net.

Otherwise, the Canadian coach called on his best players to raise their game against a tough opponent.

The Russians have struggled since Alex Ovechkin arrived last week. He and captain Ilya Kovalchuk have been held without a goal so far.

Watch the game live on Thursday on TSN and TSN Mobile TV at 2pm et/11am pt.

not today, I'm afraid. Czechs are cashing in. ( :L )
but seriously, they are playing very well.

3-0 now (Plecaneks with a cannon) with about 8 minutes left.
Elias just got absolutely nailed in the 'hitting zone'. got caught watching a fancy back-pass.
Jack Johnson with the hammer.

hey, if he didn't suck, I wouldn't need to say it!!
good move. we won't be able to give up any freebies to russia tomorrow.

Jammy Jagr with the hattrick (4 shots, 3 goals). playing for a contract!
4-0 with 3:00 left.

despite the score, Conklin has been the best player for US.
that jagr/plekaneks/whoever line has been un-freakin-stoppable.
CZE on an 12 game winning streak in the tourney (now 7-0 this year).

update: game over. 4-0
USA's tournament is over.

Reminds me of the Wimbledon final many moons ago when Pat Cash defeated Ivan Lendl. Dude in the crowd had a sign that read:

"Cash is better than a Czech"

Is Bykov still coaching Russia? I'll be very surprised if Nabby doesn't get the call.

yes, Bykov is head coach.

It should also be noted that Viktor Fasth is making a pretty good case for being in the bigs for Sweden.
After Ersberg shit the bed early, Fasth's save% has been 0.974%, with a GAA of 0.80

USA is the type of team that needs all its big guns in the lineup in order to truly be a top tier team. The depth isn't there the way it is for some of the other powerhouses.

I think part of it is the World Championships don't seem as important to the USA as it is to other countries.

Canada has many top line players on it's team. The Czech's have a very talented group of NHLer's. Sweden has a solid team as well. Look at our goalies. Conklin is a backup. Montoya was the 6th goalie to play for the Islanders last season. I guess Ryan Miller wanted more time off. Interesting how Ovechkin doesn't seem to mind going after the playoffs to play for Russia.

The Euros REALLY value this tourney.

Canada and the US? Not so much.

Many top-flight Canadians could also be there but aren't:

Price
Iginla
Toews
Keith
Sharp
Perry
Getzlaf
Richards

to name a few

The only area I'd be concerned about is goalie. Bernier & Reimer aren't even established in the NHL yet. Fleury would have been nice. Heck Brodeur would be much better than those two.

Yeah I know
KESLER forget the cup. We want a World Title.:D:
Backes
Oshie
Ryan
Brown
Gionta
Booth
Heck Scott Gomez could have made the US squad.

Why the heck wasn't Craig Anderson on the team? It's not like his team had any plans for the postseason.
