Will the Islanders Ever be Good Again?

I was watching the Rangers game and I did not realize that buffalo can sneak into the playoffs if they win all of their remaining games and isles, pens and panthers lose enough of theirs

Not that it really mattered, but when you are down 3-0 in the third in a game like this AND (this is the key part) your power play is just horrible and not likely to score, I'd have pulled the goalie on the power play with a little over 10 minutes left. It was clear they had to make something happen and not just sit back and keep playing it out.

Remember game 82 in 2007? Isles had the final playoff spot locked up and then the Devils scored 2 in the last minute to force OT and give the Leafs hope of finishing 8th. I remember a lot of talk about how one or both teams might be in a situation where they might be better off pulling their goalie instead of chancing it in a shootout.

Weirdly enough the Leafs had to beat the Habs and the Isles the Devils, this time the Devils have to beat the Habs and Buffalo plays the Devils.

Sadly it would be in the Isles or Penguins best interest to not make the playoffs. Neither stand a chance against Boston. Granted I like the Isles chance more than the Pens.

If the Isles win tonight and jump the Panthers (if the Panthers lose) to the 7th, I think they could play tough against the Canes or Devils.

Oh I know it is possible but reality with these two teams that magic series isn't happening. Especially the Penguins they won't have any amazing goalie play.

I'd rather make the playoffs and get swept because of the "you never know" mantra, but I do fully expect the Islanders to get swept if they win tonight and are the 8 seed. I agree with you on the 7th seed and IMO whomever gets the 7th seed has a pretty decent shot to win. I won't go as far as to say 50/50 of course, but I think if they can steal a game early the series will be up for grabs.

Yeah there is always a chance and at least the Isles have a goaltender that could steal the series.

Perfect scenario would be the Isles in the 7th seed and let the Panthers get beat in 4 or 5 from the Bruins.

The Isles have a goalie that is very capable of stealing a playoff series...
