He's not the typical 5th rounder though.

Everyone knows his story and the free fall he took in the draft. It had nothing to do with his skill set and everything to do with his name.

Never been a fan of chickenshit unnamed sources.
You are right that he's not the typical 5th rounder. Certainly if the Browns thought Gabriel was worth a 3rd round pick, Sanders could have been right there as well.

However, to say his fall wasn't related to his skill-set is a bit misleading. He's not elite at any 1 thing. His comp% is nice, but when you realize how many throws (roughly 70%) came within 3 yards of the LOS, or less...you start to get a picture of how that comp% might not quite be what it looks like on the surface. His arm is average, maybe slightly above. He can move in the pocket, but I wouldn't call him elusive, or a threat to run. His offense has never required him to drop back and survey the field/read defenses (1 read options, thus the 3 yards or less approach), elite WR position group for YAC.

I've said before - teams will put up with a lot of bullshit if you are elite. The list of guys in the NFL who are/were arrogant SOB's who got tons of rope is LONG...being elite goes a long, long way. When you are not viewed as elite - your bullshit doesn't smell like roses, it smells like shit. So, when you have roughly 4 or 5 teams in the market for your QB services in a draft, and 1 of them is already taking Cam Ward...you are down to roughly 4 teams that need your services. If you sandbagged any of those interviews, you just cut off at least 25% of your potential destinations. If a coach comes in and gives you an install package to review, and you blow it off and then question the coaching staff - you've now cut off 50% of your potential landing spots. Also, if teams are viewing you as backup option, at least for a year or 2 while you learn the ropes, and you tell everyone about how you are "THE" franchise QB - then there is a feeling that you could be a distraction to the team if you are not starting - and I think one that feels very well founded just on the coverage of this draft alone, but surely on comments from both Sr. and Jr in this instance.

So, yes Sanders fell - and maybe a bit further than he needed to, but he also holds a lot of responsibility on why he fell due to, potential, off the field activities leading up to the draft as much as his limited skill-set showed while in college. Should he have gone before the 5th round...sure, I think so - but the fact that he didn't isn't just a "We'll show him" attitude from the NFL, he took a limited quantity opportunity and made it that much tougher on himself by not being as well prepared off the field, and quite frankly being a bit honest with where he is physically as a passer at this point in his career.

Deion played a position where cockiness was a requirement n if you're good or great at said position. Most fans don't mind or can overlook the cockiness of a CB.

His son plays a position where cockiness is also required, but most fans will view you as an arrogant ass0 if you show it as a QB.

Another year in college had as much potential to hurt him as help him imo. Regardless though. If he can play being a 5th rd draft pick will serve as motivation. If he can't....he can't.

Exactly. QB is the one position where an "it's all about me, me, me!" attitude is a deal-breaker. QBs are team leaders or should be and that is no way to lead. I can't think of a successful NFL QB who sported that attitude.

The attitude was not worth a higher draft position. Not for a, most likely, backup.

He'll make a fine arena league QB.

31 teams passed on him.
With some teams drafting rookie QB whose ceiling is "clipboard holder" backup.
Even Cleveland drafted Gabriel ahead of him.

Only the non-football analysts are touting how great Sanders is.

He's got a few strong supporters among analysts. IMO he profiles as a backup who could compete for the starting job on a lot of teams, and media spotlight and a throng of supporters for a guy like that can ruin a team, especially if he thinks he's entitled to the job.

Drafting Gabriel ahead of him firmly puts Sanders where he should be in the pecking order and takes the pressure off everybody. Earn it in camp.

Will probably be a couple of the few pre-season games worth watching, though.

Does make preseason more watchable.

But the ruin a team or drama narrative has been unfounded. Granted we cannot see behind the scenes but when he actually talks he comes across as a leader/professional and those who do see him more say it's the same in the OTAs.

There's an excellent chance that the April Shadeur and the Shadeur we see now are different people. In April he was the talk of the town, under his glitzy father's wing all the time. Then he got smacked in the mouth in the draft, and now he's out there on the field without his father, trying to earn the chance to start on the only team to give him a shot, against a SB-winning vet and a guy who got drafted ahead of him. He may have grown up in a hurry.

My guess is this was more about his father....but he's not his father.

While I’m far from sold on Shedeur and I think he was overrated by many, I think it’s absurd that Gabriel was selected ahead of him - with Shedeur there’s a chance he is a decent NFL QB, I don’t see Gabriel as even a potential starting NFL QB, him going in the 3rd round was laughable to me. I’m certain Shedeur will emerge ahead of Gabriel on the Browns depth chart

IMO he will win the starting job due to a lack of competition. He will have his moments which will prompt fans to crow but in the end he will be have a Teddy Bridgewater career and will not save the Cleveland Browns.

You may be right, but he was a Heismann finalist, has records with games played, passing yards and passing TDs. He may not be NFL elite but usually that kind of college experience does translate well to the NFL (under the right coach).

Usually a qb that is setting those kind of records is a bad sign. In yje top 10 of passing yards the only one with a full season as a started is Bo Nix. For TDs only consistent starter is Baker Mayfield.

Usually if a qb is in college for soo g they are setting records it is known they have a physical limitation keeping them from the NFL. Ty Detmer, Keller Moore, Landry Jones. All elite college qbs without the tool set for the NFL.

However, covid has made a lot of common trends like that temporarily obsolete. Too much went weird

I would cite Brock Purdy as the most recent example.

Sometimes bad team and new coaches get rookie QB to develop. Thats a bad combo. As i mentioned about the "right coach", if Stafanski is the right kind of tutor, Gabriel can make his mark.

Hmmmm, I don’t know, there is a reason he dropped, attitude was a big part … Scouts and coaching do miss sometimes though, so we’ll see … But him falling like he did something definitely was shared with GM’s and coaches because they do talk, and share info …
