Will refs slow down the HUNH offenses this year?

That is not what people do, but that strategy started with the first quick count. SO the idea of catching the defense off guard is as old as the game itself. Most HUNH offense are multiple with tempo. They wait until they catch you in a jumbo or dime defense and then go hyper speed. It is the counter to a 20-30 year trend of defensive specialist. Funny, but I doubt HUNH would have been as effective in the 60-70s

I'm only highlighting the part I don't like about it. As I said in my other post, the main thing I don't care for is running back to the line and then getting plays off the sideline.

If the defensive player is able to get into his stance, then have at it speed wise. Of course, if the defensive player is able to get into his stance, then they'll probably just look to the sideline and get a play rather than quick snapping, so it's kind of hand and hand.

I have rarely seen a defense caught walking around. There is no reason a defender can not get in a stance if the entire offense can get set and snap the ball in the same time. That seems more of a lazy problem, than a HUNH issue

Offenses that rely on trying to catch defenses out of position are horrible for the game.
Um - all offenses try to do this. It's called "creating space". It's why you see plays like misdirection, fake hand offs, draws, screens. Pretty much everything.

Ok, maybe I should clarify that by being out of position I mean not being able to line up to start the play, not what happens after the play.

Didn't realize there would be confusion about that.

Correct, it's not a huge problem in that regard, but the offenses are trying to do that and will if given the opportunity.

See - after the play, everyone gets up and you do it again. If you take too long, you end up out of position.

Maybe you meant "during the play."

Those damned offenses! Always trying to do stuff to gain an advantage! How dare they?
How?
Dare?
They?

Sorry. The argument that a defense isn't given a chance to line up is completely untrue.

Football has always had the rule that an offense has to be lined up and set for a full second before the ball is snapped. Even a HUNH must follow this rule.

If the offense can get lined up and set before the snap.....

the defense has the exact same amount of time to do so.

We all know what the real complaint has been is the limiting of situational substitutions.

And to that I say ....

Tough.
Shit.

Maybe you could have scored against Alabama 1st string defense in the national championship if Notre Dame had done it.

You can say tough shit now all you want. But when the rules change, that'll be the end of it.

And yes, substitution limitation is the biggest thing, but the OP isn't really addressing that.

No, if I was worried about players being out of position "during the play", I'd probably be a Notre Dame fan.

Get your defensive substitutions in quicker, or have better stamina. It's not like the defense doesn't have time to line up for the snap of the play if the offense can. It's utterly dumb to penalize the offense because the defense isn't lined up and ready for play.

If the rules change and they bring an end to the HUNH, then I'd say the same thing to the HUNH fans:

Tough.
Shit.

Obviously that is what teams will have to do in the meantime.

I understand the "deal with it" side of things, and it's not like teams won't. Football has been changing in different ways for decades, and the teams will adjust. The better teams will stay the better teams just as it has been and likely will be. And given that fact, I just don't hold much weight into that argument. I'd rather worry more about what makes for better games, and to me that includes a bit of defense.

Defense which has and continues to be made less effective with rule changes btw. Because the rules aren't about "deal with it", it's about what's better for the game.

The refs can't slow them down. There is no reason to do so.

The same rules apply to both teams on both sides of the ball.

If you're gonna do away with HUNH's then you need to trim the play clock.
