I would vote Tomlin here for a number of reasons.

  • Payton allowed his team to have the worst defense in the league in 2014 and followed that up in 2015 by having the worst defense in the history of the NFL and not firing the DC (Rob Ryan) until it was way past funny.
  • Bountygate
  • Tomlin has never had a losing season (even Belicheck can't say that)
  • Tomlin has 2 SB appearances (1 win)
And outside of the tangibles Payton is just too much of a jackass. He constantly mocks other teams like doing the Skol clap before the Minnesota Miracle happenedSean Payton admits mocking Vikings fans with Skol clap, calls it 'good playoff fun'

or giving Devonta Freeman the throat slash/choke gesture during a game with the Falcons.Sean Payton mocked the Falcons for choking. Then the Saints promptly choked.

And the team takes on the personality of their coach.Saints ruthlessly mock Tarik Cohen for his small stature

Only comparable thing Tomlin has done was standing on the field of play while a kickoff was being returned.Mike Tomlin fined $100,000 for sideline incident with Jacoby Jones

Payton may be more creative but I think Tomlin is a greater leader of men.

both 13 seasons, 208 games, and both have hall of fame qbs. This is kinda creepy how close they are

Brees is a much better qb than Big Ben, Brees is also probably the most accurate qb in history, and that gets you just one ring.

Tomlin, last years NFC Championship game showed how overrated Payton is, than blames the refs on top of that. Good coaches don't make excuses. Payton has had a HOF qb healthy for all his coaching career, only this year did Brees miss any real time.

I'd take Tomlin

Too my knowledge he's never been involved with paying players to intentionally injure other players

You 're only sour about that because it was Farve they were trying to and did knock out of the game and brought the Vikings season to an end.

oh , only GM's have a role in bringing in players, and developing them. Especially with long tenured coaches. Got it. By your notion then. Pace is completely at fault for the bears season, not nagy.
No, but personnel is the role of the GM. Not the head coach. You’re giving tomlin credit where it isn’t deserved.

Developing players isn't a coaches job? Draft input etc..... need to me. No wonder bears fans can't figure out if it's the coach or the gms fault

Payton gets less flak because he is considered one of brightest offensive minds right now and his offenses have consistently being up there in terms of rankings.

Tomlin is more of a CEO type of coach and nobody has ever accused him being a defensive guru despite coming from a defensive background so he really doesn't have any specific thing to hang his hat on.

Both have under performed though and deserve criticism because both have had bad losses against teams they had no business losing too in playoffs. No real excuse for either guy to haven't won or even been in a Super Bowl in forever.

I think what also hurts Tomlin is watching Belichick constantly coach circles around him almost every year since those games are usually nationally televised everybody sees it year in and year out.

You gave him credit for drafting the right players. That’s not his job. Developing players is, but not bringing in players. By your logic, the GM has no role.

the GM and coach are collaborative in tenured coach situations, to think otherwise is asinine. So to give the coach no credit in the drafts, not logical. To give the GM no credit is also asinine. They intertwine in situations, logic tells us that.

I would vote for Payton.

He never lost to Tim Tebow in the playoffs
Exactly why I posted this. Typical. But it's ok to lose to fn Kirk cousins at home as Massive favs? Tebows record that year was stellar btw

I like both. If I had to pick one or the other to be my team's HC it would be Payton and by a decent amount :2cents:

I think I go with Tomlin. I think head coaching in the NFL has a lot less to do with X's and O's and a lot more to do with the outside stuff and being able to manage a room full of alpha personalities. As talented as the Steelers have been, the distractions there should get Tomlin a medal for not going totally postal at some point.
As for Payton, a creative offensive mind, no doubt but a complete douchebag. He also had a golden boy with a golden arm. The only distractions were what Payton brought into in. Bountygate, etc. I have zero respect for the man even if his record were much better than Tomlin's. I respect Tomlin.

Sean Payton seems like the kind of guy that would've killed more kids than Brian Kelly, if he'd had the chance.

Tomlin seems a natural born leader of men.
