Because when you are up in the count 0-2 you can afford to throw a pitch out of the zone hoping for a chase or more likely setting up the next pitch

i don't think that's true. most SOX starters go maybe 5. and it matters because if you're throwing that many pitches you're walking guys.
notice how many pitches valdez has thrown ... 20 fewer same innings.

This is where LaRussa's old school devotion to set reliever roles (Kimbrel the 8th, Hendricks the 9th) might hurt. In the playoffs you have to open it up, use your best relievers in high leverage moments even early like the 5th inning. I'd bring in Kimbrel here.
