We all argue amiably, which is good, but apart from all the SportsHoopla, what makes a great NFL player?

What are your opinions to qualify a NFL player as all time great?

Short answer:
top 2 or 3 at his position with reasonable durability

re-read your question. First you said great -which I gave an option on. Then you said all time great. Two totally different things.
all-time great would have to be the best ever at his position. Then the argument of different eras would come into play.

Good questions @Balljim55 good to see you back in the hoop.

A poll would have been confusing I think. Just overall, without considering the obvious athletic and positional capabalities.
- Showing up on time, putting in the hours
- Belief in the team and your team mates
- Will to win, stuff like that

Whatever it takes for your team to win.

Guys who elevate their teams. They don't have to be all-world. A defensive lineman isn't going to win championships, but can inspire everyone else. Think of guys like Butkus and Nietzsche.

And think of guys who stay with their teams. Elway did. ODB did not. Fantasy football is fucking the game up, making it about players, not teams. It is still a team sport.

To paraphrase Potter Stewart: I can't define all time great, but I know it when I see it.

Some mix of absolute dominance and longevity. Tony Boselli was good enough, but not for long enough.

Does any NFL player qualify for the Koufax exception?

But, all conversation revolves around an idiot athlete who spent his leisure time, one would suppose, harassing hard working innocent women.

A player who has not played 1 down in more than a year, while banking millions of dollars, a guy who is going to walk on the field after 6 weeks of suspension when the season starts, and play at a high level just because people say he is a great QB.

Where is the evidence of this? Can anyone provide facts of this supposed QB superiority? Sounds like a big load of BS to me. He is going to get pummeled by defenses. Wait and see.

There are many players, much better than this, that nobody talks about.

What is this thread about exactly? Is there an agenda or is this a real question?

The thread is exactly what has been said. You can read it anyway you like. There is no agenda. What I posted above is just an example of what makes players not great.

The question remains, who are the great players nobody talks about? What makes a great player? Surely, sitting out, costing teams millions does not apply? Used the current issue as an example because am tired of people talking about how that QB is a great player. Have seen nothing in that respect.

That he played for the Niners.

I sure wish that the Hall of Fame had a high standard like this.

Top 3 QB rating of all time I consider a great player. Problem is you still need a team around him. Marino was one of the best QB’s of all-time and no SB titles.

Are you comparing him to Marino? Funny. He needs to do a lot more to be even in the same sentence as Marino, who in my book was a great player. Shitty ownership and coaches held Marino back, IMO.
