NEW YORK -- Bring it on!

The New York Mets close the first half with a four-game showdown against the division-leading Washington Nationals at Citi Field.

Washington (51-35) holds a four-game division lead over the Mets (46-38).

The Mets were swept in three games at Nationals Park last week, during which they had a season-high 23-inning scoreless drought. But they rebounded by winning six of seven games against the Chicago Cubs andMiami Marlins.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us this weekend,” Terry Collins said.

Said Bryce Harper to reporters in D.C. on Wednesday: “How many games are we up on them -- four? We could either be tied or up eight. It's plain and simple.”

Bartolo Colon (7-4, 2.87 ERA) opposes right-hander Lucas Giolito (0-0, 0.00) in Thursday’s 7:10 p.m. ET opener. Gioloto tossed four scoreless innings against the Mets in his major league debut before a rain delay shortened the outing.

Sandy Alderson said he is unsure how long Matt Harvey has been pitching with the issue. The GM said surgery is inevitable in all likelihood. The team only became aware of Harvey's shoulder discomfort after his last start.

Matt Harvey has been presented two options -- surgery or a nerve-block injection -- for thoracic outlet syndrome. He is weighing his options. Surgery would require four months. A block would just be a temporary fix.

"His arm just felt like he was dead," Terry Collins said about what Matt Harvey felt in his last start. Harvey lost some feeling in fingers.

Logan Verrett will start Saturday in place of Matt Harvey against the Washington Nationals. Zack Wheeler is not anywhere near close to returning. He threw on flat ground at 90 feet today but has not returned to a mound since his latest setback.

NEW YORK -- Should Noah Syndergaard start the All-Star Game? Or should unbeaten Stephen Strasburg get the honor, especially considering the game in his native San Diego?

That will be National League manager Terry Collins’ call.

Collins will get an up-close look at both Friday when Syndergaard (9-3, 2.41 ERA) faces off against Strasburg (11-0, 2.71) at 7:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field.

After posting a win in the opener of the four-game series on Thursday, the New York Mets moved to within three games of the first-place Washington Nationals in the NL East.

• Mets' Harvey chooses season-ending surgery

NEW YORK -- Mets right-hander Matt Harvey intends to undergo season-ending surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome, with the expectation that he will be fully ready for the 2017 season, agent Scott Boras told ESPN.

Dr. Robert Thompson is expected to perform the procedure sometime in the next week in St. Louis.

Bartolo Colon is an All-Star. He replaces the Giants' Madison Bumgarner (who is pitching sunday) on the NL squad for Tuesday's game in San Diego.

Baseball is a crazy game. Last year at the all-star break, Daniel Murphy had 5 HRs for the Mets. This year, of his 15 HR's so far... 5 have come AGAINST the Mets..

Here's Mets GM Sandy Alderson's statement on Matt Harvey's decision to undergo surgery: "Terry and I met with Matt today, and although we all feel badly for him, we expressed our support in this decision and know he will work as hard as possible to get back on the field for the 2017 season."

Mets manager Terry Collins met with Matt Harvey on Friday. On Harvey's emotions as the righty faces surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, Collins said: "He was disappointed, but at the same point relieved that now we have an answer."

Max Scherzer replaces Stephen Strasburg on the NL All-Star roster, so Strasburg's faceoff on Friday night is actually not a meeting of potential starting pitchers for that game.

Sandy Alderson has indicated that he will at least explore external starting-pitching options. We'll see if anything materializes. Four names that scouts say should be available: Julio Teheran, Jeremy Hellickson, Sonny Gray and Ervin Santana.

Terry Collins said Noah Syndergaard will definitely see action in the All-Star Game -- starter or otherwise -- even though he has a bone spur in his pitching elbow. "I certainly intend to pitch Noah Syndergaard in the All-Star Game. I think he deserves it. I think the world needs to see him."

Bartolo Colon, 43, says he wants to pitch one more season in the majors, and says being an All-Star selection was an honor and a surprise. As for picking up a bat in San Diego, Colon said: "I pray to God it doesn't happen."
