If you are an up and coming coach, would you rather coach USC or Texas? SC is the more successful program, had more draftees and more hall of famers. Texas' advantage is that they have more money than any other program.

USC. At Southern Cal you can coach, at Texas it sounds you're more of a head figure than anything else. More about pleasing these High ranking Texas officials than putting together a game plan.

Personally, I don't think a coach could go wrong at either location. There are a few "elite" or "destination" jobs in cfb where coaches typically don't leave for another school and these are 2 of them.

Texas has won won more games than God since the start of the BCS era.

Top tier jobs: Texas, OU, USC, ND, Mich, tOSU... and maybe Bama now.

That's it. All equal, just different flavor.

To stick to the question at hand: Living in LA or Austin, that's pretty much the biggest difference. Both nice, I guess.

All top coaching jobs have their pressures and high dollar boosters, etc., that expect to be appeased by the head coach and USC is no different. USC boosters are just quieter about it. In either case, coaches get to do plenty of coaching, they just have more demands away from the field.

I think that when you start talking about top tier CFB coaching jobs at places like Texas, USC, Notre Dame, etc., it's a push as far as which job is better. They all have their advantages (More money at Texas) and disadvantages (dealing with the media/Holllywood glitz factor in L.A.). If someone does well at any of those schools, more likely than not, they'll be headed to the NFL if that's what they are eventually looking for.

I don't see the money of Texas as being such a big advantage.

Always here about it, how they can pay all this money for a coach and so on. Yet I never see them actually spend it.

In 2012, Texas had expenses of $24,507,352. They had a ton of revenue, $24,507,352, for a profit of $71,242,332

Yet, that 24 million spent isn't even close to being the most spent.

Notre Dame spent 25 million on 68 revenue.
Florida spent 26 million on 72 revenue
Alabama spent 31 million on 76 revenue
Ohio St spent 34 million on 60 revenue
Auburn spent 39 million on 76 revenue

Arkansas spent about as much on football as texas, 24 million.
Wisconsin 23.5 million
Michigan 23.5 million
Oklahoma 23 million
South Carolina 22 million

And on down the list.

Iowa spends 20 million, #15 for most.

And for this discussion, USC spent 19.4 million, #20 for most. That was done on 31 million in revenue, so USC doesn't turn a ton of profit. Although the times might have something to do with that, I doubt it's all that much. Having lived in California, college ball isn't a big deal like it would be in Texas.

So, Texas has more money? Yeah, they generate more profit. Big deal.

Most likely an opinion of where a certain individual would like to be.

Either place is without a doubt one of the Top 5 most desirable jobs in college football, and you'll be paid handsomely.

Real question is what kind of atmosphere do you prefer?

Personally, I hate LA and would much more prefer to raise a family in Austin, TX over Los Angeles.

Others would probably prefer the much more vivid culture of LA over Austin.

You can win big at both places. I do think Texas offers a bit more of a better opportunity because they are the choice of recruits in the entire state of Texas. Not sure you can say that about California and USC.

Here's the funny thing. All of the nest players come out of the south, they say. It's not just regional it's southern. Most of the best Cali players come out of Southern California. I'm guessing climate plays a role. Texas, Florida and Cali are top 3 but Louisiana and Alabama have the most recruits per capita. But when you look at the Cali players when it comes to college recruiting, they are almost all southern Cali players.

I'm going with weather.

USC or Texas? Someone above said the truest statement: Coaches don't leave either place to go elsewhere.

Money Factor:

* Texas can pay more;
* Austin is lower cost of living than SoCal;
* No state income tax in Texas.

This definitely favors Texas.

Location:

* Austin > LA;
* But in all fairness, USC coach could live in Newport Beach, Malibu, etc... Some of the nicest places on the planet.

Call it a slight favor towards USC here.

Football Prestige and Recruiting:

* If I had to put a thumb on the scale it would very slightly favor Texas. Very close though.

All in all you are talking about 2 of the top 5 premier jobs in the country. All other things being close to equal I would take the couple extra million that would favor the Texas coach.

If I'm a young coach with both jobs being offered I'm probably taking Texas and not thinking twice about it. Sorry, but I think Texas has an easier conference to dominate and that has to weigh in when considering any top job. You must win to hang on to either and I'd much rather face the Big12 every year than the Pac. Don't agree? Well good for you. That is my opinion.

Both top 5 jobs, it would come down to where you wanna live, and how strong are your rivals. ucla hasn't truly capitalized on USC's down years, but at Texas baylor and a&m are getting stronger.

once Shaw leaves the pac turns into 1 team conference, until USC wakes up.
